I know! It's awful! Even people who should know better don't! My mother once had a NY state trooper pass her bus on the right side when she was mid drop off. Her kids were standing on the shoulder 10 feet from the front end of her bus getting ready to be crossed. The trooper came within 15 feet of where the kids were standing before he stopped. Yes, he had his light and sirens on but my mom couldn't abandon her drop-off because kids were standing on the shoulder. She completed her drop-off by crossing the kids safely to their driveway. (This is the law in NYS for school bus drivers for this situation. It's right in the DMV drivers manual for school bus drivers.) The trooper proceeded to abandon his call and come on my mom's bus to spend the next 5 minutes chewing her out for not pulling over for an emergency vehicle. She informed him she couldn't because she had kids off the bus mid crossing procedure and safely completed it as efficiently as possible like she had been trained to do in this situation. He proceeded ask for her license/etc. And write up a "warning" for my mom. He then went on his emergency! My mom was told by her boss to not worry. She did the right thing. The school district reported the trooper using the information on the "warning." Nothing else ever was mentioned about it.
