Important Correction : @35:49 A type I error (or error of the first kind) is the incorrect rejection of a true null hypothesis. type II error (or error of the second kind) is the failure to reject a false null hypothesis. Examples of type II errors would be a blood test failing to detect the disease it was designed to detect, in a patient who really has the disease; a fire breaking out and the fire alarm does not ring; or a clinical trial of a medical treatment failing to show that the treatment works when really it does.

Type 1 is false +ve, i.e incorrectly reported +ve & Type 2 is false -ve, i.e incorrectly reported -ve. So if we consider a court delivering a guilty judgement as +ve and not guilty as -ve, then 'Innocent is convicted' is Type 1 error [incorrectly reported guilty] and 'Guilty person is freed from all charges' is a Type 2 error [incorrectly reported not guilty]. When trying to define using a null hypothesis, since this hypothesis itself is the opposite of what the researcher is trying to prove, rejecting a null hypothesis is +ve. Hope this helps in understanding the statements above :)

I have researched all over youtube and believe me there is no single authentic channel giving information for psychology optional for UPSC. And then I found your channel. Such a comprehensive and to-the-point perfect explanation. Please please please never stop making such videos. Thank you so much for making these videos. Very simply and nicely explained concepts with good examples. Good luck if you are planning to attempt CSE again. With this wonderful work that you're doing, you'll definitely have more well wishes and blessings coming your way.😊 And from what i understand, simply put, Type 1 error is "rejecting a true null hypothesis when one shouldn't have". The experimenter decides that a significant effect is present, when it is actually not. Type 2 error is "retaining a false null hypothesis when one shouldn't have." So this error is not detecting a significant effect, when it actually exists.

Simply consider Null Hypothesis as Opposite of your real Hypothesis which you want to prove i.e- If my null hypothesis is that dogs live longer than cats then here my real Hypothesis that i want is that dogs do not live longer than cat. So in Type 1 error-- I accept my real hypothesis which is apparently wrong & it is the null hypothesis that is true . Type 2 error- I accept my null hypothesis which is apparently wrong & it is the real hypothesis that is true.

Sir ,I am from Maharashtra, preparing for upsc CSE 2019 and have not selected optional yet. I'm confused between psychology and sociology but have for more interest in psychology than sociology,I have read 11th ncert and some model answers also and will say that I can answer at least theoretical questions But problem is that ,after knowing the fact that among this 2017's result of selected candidate there is only one candidate in top 100 with psychology optional and many other students with psychology were not able to score good marks in same especially in paper 2. I red somewhere upsc deliberately gives low marks to certain optional to reduce its popularity and this time Thier target is psychology as students choosing psychology are increasing.. Though I have interest in subject but after all my ultimate goal is to crack CSE and if my favourite subject is not going to help me for acheive it then what should I do? Please brief me sir as soon as possible.

I think u should clear up ur myths first. As per my knowledge there's scaling & not any bias by UPSC. & Getting ur name in final list requires u to score enough marks in GS ESSAY & INTERVIEW, only Optional doesn't play sole role.
