it's phenominal what AI can accomplish nowadays and its only going to see improvements, with such a low resolution to work with in that last vid, its kinda like seeing Nes/Snes games with upscaling these days (and I am keen to see real time improvement of them) because forgiving the flaws of the upscale, the sharpness of the buildings is impressive.. :) Great vid!

I'm really liking the idea of dlss and image/video upscaling and it's already showing a lot of promise. I've been using nothing but my intel uhd 620 equipped laptop for gaming for around 2 weeks instead of my main pc just to see what kind of gaming I can do on it. Tinkering with reshade and graphics mods on older games to try to make them look new or using it to optimize newer titles by stipping back effects and injecting simple post-processing effects. In many new games, fxaa saves performance compared to their native aa and you can customize the fxaa so it looks better than their own fxaa if the game even has it. I haven't gotten to try dlss yet because no game I play supports it but just with tweaking, modding, reshade, and custom resolutions I've already been surprised by what I could run with the games still looking ok. Sometimes I substitute a new game with an earlier game in its series that has similar gameplay and try to make it look like a new game. With dlss one-day great image quality and acceptable framerates might be obtainable on standard non-gaming hardware.

Since I also put hundreds of hours into Gigapixel I can also give some advice: - Use "native" resolution images, means the less aliasing and artifacts you can manage to have the better - Use Gaussian Blur, not much, about 2% on a 1600x1200 image and crush it to about 400 to 800 in height - If you have dark scenes, use a shadow lifter from Premiere or Photoshop, get the most details from the dark parts as you can before doing the Blur and Crush, you can get amazing details out of the dark and crush the artifacts to a minimum with blur - No Anti-Aliasing? Blur - JPEG Artifacts? Blur - iPhone Pictures from Low Light Environments? Shadow Recover, Blur and Crush For Videos use a frame duplicate finder, yes, they don't exist, you have to build one on your own. If you have converted your videos to JPEGs, use the "Awesome Duplicate Photo Finder" and remove the excess frames, then do your upscale magic and the lower the framerate the lower should be your target on Interpolation, if you have 10FPS, go with 20 not 60, cuts down on the artifacts, also means you can use the low FPS border You're welcome

Frequency domain knowledge would help a lot here! Frame rate interpolation is best thought of in the 1D signal processing case. The lowpass filter you use during interpolation determines many details of the output. I would argue that linear interpolation will be a good choice for very low frame rates, as this gives a decent amount of emphasis on missing high frequency information compared to other typical filters.

My entire channel is based around AI upscaling and my only advice would that for the IRL videos, use artificial camera imperfections in post to hide the flaws (noise, bloom etc) It goes a long way; I was able to use these type of techniques to get my videos from nearly 240p to a 1080p resolution.

Philip, I really think you'd find avisynth really, really useful for future projects when it comes to removing duplicate frames, interlacing, etc. For example, the issue you had with the 25fps footage could have been fixed by a single re-encode to remove those specific frames (assuming there's a pattern to them). Hope that's helpful for any future projects.
