I like the honest review of the handles. Saw them at the Southampton boat show a few years ago I asked the guy what the advantages were and he said most things you named as not an advantage. I then asked the price, gulp..... I said before I left that I think someone has invented a problem to find a solution when the basic design of a handle has held that way for many years and works very well. 😮😊

Interesting that you find Sam humble. I have seen all of his videos going back to his voyage to Hawaii. In the beginning I thought he was humble and self preservation was the last of his priorities. Now I feel he is quite arrogant and ultra safe. Maybe the change is due to the mountains of money he has made since starting out.

Minor a you may well find is less insane, and ajorca is very upmarket Boaty, and I have heard is a bit difficult now for Moorings and Anchorage ability. Anchoring used to be ok around Ibiza, but I have no idea what it's like now. Best Wishes and Fair Winds. Bob. 👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️

I have no idea how Sam singlehands all over the world. I tried single handing a Slipper 17 today, everything went wrong, and I ended up on the rocks. Mainsail wouldn't raise all the way, outboard motor died, got stuck in the wind shadow of an island, next thing you know I was on the rocks. Had to use a signal flare and ask for someone to tow me back to the ramp. Luckily met some very nice people but my boat is severely damaged :(

If Sam is like most of us cruisers. You start from a position of wanting to arrive at your destination in daylight hours. Departures at night are preferably avoided, too. Coastal passages therefore tend to fall into one of three buckets: (i) less than 20 NM (depending upon the length of day but the tropics are always 12 hrs) - leave in the morning, arrive before sunset; (ii) 20 to 80 NM's - leave just before sunset, arrive in daylight hours; (iii) more than 80 NM's - your average speed made good is too uncertain and therefore your arrival time too, so leave either at dawn or sunset, at your preference. Unless you have a lot of time (ie not driven by the Shenegan 90 day rule), most cruisers want to make at least 50NM passages, so nighttime departures are very common.

Get those new sails going, then you enjoy going upwind :) Old sails are depressing, making for slow progress upwind. Dude! At about 18:20, there was a shot of your main luff. It was sooo loose and bellied. You will never get to windward with the sail like that. You need to rig a downhaul or cunningham on the main luff and get it tightened up. The more wind, the tighter you set the luff.

I had a chance to try NVGs sailing. Visibility is amazing! The problem is that the field of view is very narrow and one has to keep moving their head around - that can trigger sea sickness. They are very expensive. They are monochromatic as well, so one loses all info from light colors pros/cons.

Night time sailing is the best, but it is better away from crowded areas. At nighttime, I stay at least 5 miles off the coast. Once your vision has adjusted to the low light, you don't need artificial aids. Sailors have been sailing at night for centuries.
