My favorite part about your sailing videos is you actually sail a great deal of the time. I often see sailing vessels motor up the second the wind dies. I totally understand the desire to get moving but I always enjoy your willingness to relax and enjoy the moment.

Hi Sam. I see that you don't have a sock in the spinaker, well, that doesn't matter. I'll tell you how I do it When adducting or organizing the Spinaker, you stretch it along its entire length and put it together until it becomes a cigar, you take sewing thread and in sections every 50 cm you tie the thread to the spinnaker as if you were tying a bow, an ordinary, loose knot. It's just keeping the spinnaker organized and you do it until you get to theholes of the brooms, you fold it in the middle joining the three holes and put it in the bag. Once you want to do the maneuver you already have the three fists in sight, you just have to hoist the Spi, quartering it only with the main one, once up you present it to the wind with the same force of wind and pulling the brooms it will break the fine threads of sew and it will open evenly and suddenly withelegance. P.S. It is making a worm with many bellies with its belt of sewing thread. That's called quartering a Spinaker WITHOUT HAVING A SOCK.

Sam, I met you in Titusville a few months ago. I was the guy that said hi Sam as I came into the dock and you were working on your free boat. Anyways I was just in the German Alps and watched many paragliding flights and it was pretty amazing. Thought of you since you said at the time you'd be going to the Alps after I mentioned how much we all enjoyed your flights I believe in Scotland. Enjoy your sail through Europe.

Good point on the spinniker pole - keep it perpendicular to the wind and lifted so that the foot of the kite is as level as possible. They are effective downwind and very pretty. If you want to get rich, figure out a cleat that automatically plays out spinniker sheet as the boat heels excessively to avoid broaching.
@hmspain52 Жыл бұрын
Wow! Those shots with a camera somehow on the end of a pole are spectacular!
@jabjab1010 Жыл бұрын
Good to stay busy and good with putting up. . .but I agree with everyone else, for not racing, a code zero or Asym is 90% of the spinnaker with 20% of the set up. Can still use the pole but don’t really need the uphaul/down haul. . .Super light don’t need to roller reefing. . .Just an easy low wind sail. . .Love that you put the time into the spinnaker, but it looked like you had it resting on the forestry. . .It might not have been, but that’s not safe.

Pole perpendicular to wind, trim to fill, then ease the sheet until the luff just breaks.
@johnbrooks1188 Жыл бұрын
Tie a piece of yarn (12" or so) to the middle of the pole, and it makes a great telltale. Easy then to set it perpendicular to the apparent wind.
@larkangel6593 Жыл бұрын
The really big waves at nazare you see photos of only break 2-3 times per year The rest of the time its still big (and dangerous for navigation) by normal standards The record breaking waves are the result of the most intense winter storms per season No one would be out sailing anyway; the local fishermen probably stay in as well

I have a GP14 Symetric spinnaker for my Drascombe Lugger. It added 1.5KTS of speed recently in a very low wind situation. I mostly fly it Asymetrically as its a lot easier to sale and as long as you pull it down hard with a cleat fore of the shrouds it flies really well. I only use it for low wind scenarios and try not to use it symmetrically as its so hard to pole out etc. Many people assume you want to go fast with a spinnaker but you;re right Sam, they often just keep you going in light airs which is exactly why I have one.
@samholmessailing Жыл бұрын
Right on. Exactly. Ive tried using mine without the pole. I found the most time consuming part was running all the lines and repacking it. the pole didn’t add much extra time or effort for me and seems to fly a lot better dead downwind. So I always use it. I do have a really well set up track system from my pole that’s really easy to deploy so that might make the difference.

I feel uneasy to point anything to a great sailor with so much experience but I have to: 4:30 Beware Sam do not let the pole rest on the forestay as the lateral force is translated in a much stronger longitudinal pull on the stray that could break it (or the pole). Might not be critical in your case but why tempt fate when so much sh%t can go wrong already. I know you knew, ,just absentmindedness I guess. Great video again and thank you for sharing your journey with us . PS:Dolphin#1 "human jumping in the water" Dolphin#2 "smells like asparagus, lets split"
