Tanaka (JKA) had a similar uraken. With him he used his lead hand to deflect & then struck with uraken uchi all in one motion.

The weird thing about using Uraken Uchi is that from my experience (i am a former national team senior kumite fighter) it is not judged/scored well! I really love the technique and i have a very good usage of it, and even though i executed it perfectly in countless situations in matches, IT HAS NEVER BEEN SCORED. The kiai was right, distance was perfect, there was even a pretty good "slap sound" to even better indicate the succession of the technique, but the refferees never actually awarded a single YUKO or done anything about it, nor have i ever seen an Uraken Uchi awarded with my own eyes in someone elses match. It is a great weapon in hands of someone with long arms.Unfortunately, this magnificent technique is dying because its not awarded as it should be...

Dear Mirko - I know exactly what you are talking about. It has happened many times to myself that this technique was not scored, even with perfect timing and kime as demonstrated in the video. I hate to say it but most judges are just not capable of "seeing and feeling" this technique and that's probably why they dont score it. Nevertheless Uraken is a very good technique in self-defense if executed correctly and should be trained much more often. All I can tell you is be happy that you have this tool in YOUR toolbox and take some satisfaction from that. Oss
