It's funny, coz musicians back in USSR prefered to look for real american guitars on the black market and those who could afford it payed a lot of money for GIBSONS or Fenders! Nice to see how these USSR instruments get new life in America! Thanks!!!!

I ride a Ural motorcycle. So I bought a Ural guitar. The guitar is built like the bike. Crude. Heavy. A little strange. Very useable. Should last forever. Would be good for a gig in a bar known for fights. You could swing it as a weapon and then keep playing, still in tune. YPAN!

To play well in tune, to play at all a guitar needs to be set up well. Going by most of the complaints, most are setup poorly with an action that is far too high. For having such a horrible reputation they sold extremely well.

In Russia those guitars are considered to be junk but as a russian proverb says: В умелых руках и хуй балайка, meaning if you can play, you can play even on a chair.

After watching this 8 year old video and seeing the generous amount of information now onine for Ural 650 guitars I ordered another refugee from Reverb, Vintage Guitars Shop of Dnipro, Ukraine. My tenth from him, two were horns, the other 7 were guitars. Takes about 3 weeks from Ukraine to US, shipping is $$. Radio technicians seemed to have been a target audience for Soviet guitar promotions and so they do have some additional circuits that American guitars use stomp boxes for. I read long ago that older capacitors tend to go bad from disuse. You will need to know or learn some electronics information to fully service these guitars yourself. All the switches are probably to add/remove capacitors that function to filter out high tones or high frequency noise from guitar signal output. Some of the Russian guitars have active pickups and 9V battery terminal under the plate that covers the neck attachment.

Great sound. But what's it like in terms of playing comfort? And is it genuine guitar or there were some tweaks like circuit or neck tuning?

+Шварценпух According to the description in the other video, the neck was straightened, the circuit tweaked and the guitar was refretted too. These guitars were produced for a long time and production quality wasn't very consistent. Some were fairly playable from the start and some were absolutely worthless. In the cases where good woods were used, they have potential for being very decent guitars.

+Strongholle Yes, we had to re-fret and straighten the neck and we removed much of the circuitry and wired everything point to point for a more organic tone. The pickups in these sound very good after we removed all the filtering.

+drowninginguitars I read an interview with Ural lead designer. They had to work with materials they had in the industry, beech for the most part. Everything was told with a production plan from Party, and there was a kind of monopoly. "We make them, boy will buy, because they have no choice". And quality control... there was some, but only from production point of view, not musicians'. I would love to see if somebody took soviet designs and made modern musician-tailored instruments. I like Tonika, Ural and Solo's design pretty much.

there should be date of manufacturing on backplate of the guitar. Based on pickups' appearance it must be late modification of Ural 650 model, because there were 3 main revisions of this model with different pickups. Late Ural 650 guitars have narrower plastic body pickups with geometric ornament on its upper surface and earlier models picups are bigger and they got chromed metallic body. These 3 types of Ural pickups sound different.

"Урал" поставляли в страны СЭВ, а также : Италию, ФРГ и ещё какую-то - со слов технолога (понимаю, что звучит голословно)! В 1976-77 г.г. работал на фирме "Урал". В нашем цехе делали ящики для гитар "Урал", кот. шли на экспорт. Внутри ящики оббивали зелёным сукном как на бильярде! ЕсСсевненно мною была "приобретена" гитара по запчастям за "жидкую валюту" и ден. знаки. Играли в школьном ансамбле,. Ушёл в армию - оставил ребятам. До нынешних дней у меня не дожила. В данное время купил такую же "старушку", надо привести в порядок. :)

That sounded awful (despite the virtuoso playing). For a single coil guitar to sound that muddy, and mixed-up, and to have so little tonal range … Even if you gave me one of these I'd just chop it up for firewood based on this clip.
