"I would like to place this song in IR's Top Ten" I was inclined to agree with you first but then... there are simply too many Raja songs that would be clamouring for the top ten positions. This one is simply mesmerizing. I do agree that it hasn't reached many people. That said the movie itself is brilliant - one of Mahendran's masterpieces. When he is inspired, Raja delivers mind-blowing music, the kind that no other music composer can imagine.

The place where SPB starts "Parvai ovovundrum koorum pon kaviyam paavai enindra koolam pon oviyam.." what a lyric, what a deep shivering tone, I am haunted by that few seconds... I just want Raja to redo all those music with a multi track, Dolby Atmos, digital ... whatever is available. Those would become super duper hits. I once heard kanal Hassan say that if Sivaji Ganesan had ever received the Oscars then no one else could be given the award because doing so would be like equating Sivaji with some one else. Not sure about that but it's true with Ilayaraja. For the number of hits he had given he should not be given any award. The other musicians ( who are probably half as good ) should be given the ' Ilayaraja Award'.

Ilayaraja’s Golden Period 1978 to 1982! Why? His unique and experimental phase at its peak. From 1975, but peaked from 1978. Ended in 1983. Thereafter Ilayaraja became a brand. Superior quality of course, but as a brand he worked within a certain bandwidth.

Mudhal Mariyadhai, Mani Ratnam & Kamal movies being in that category, just naming a few. Even today e.g., the BGM in Onaiyum Attukuttiyum (2013). But from 1975, in particular from 1978 to 1982, has a totally different fresh feel.
