UPDATED VERSION (2019): • Urban Altoids EDC Kit ...
"A mini survival kit is a small survival kit which consists of the most essential outdoor survival tools and supplies which are the hardest to improvise or replace. A mini survival kit is intended to be carried along all the time and is usually designed to complement other survival tools carried along in a larger, separate bag. Other personal gear will primarily offer additional serviceability and ease of use, but the mini survival kit should provide for the basic needs of a survival situation, followed by self rescue, assistance, or a return to normalcy in optimum situations. " [Wikipedia]
The Urban Altoids Survival Tin is not designed as a standard "survival tin" (as defined above). While the items in the above tin would be extremely beneficial in an outdoors emergency, the majority of items have little use for EDC (Every Day Carry) purposes in an urban environment. Instead of carrying a bunch of items that I would most likely never use on a daily basis, I redesigned my "survival" kit into more of an urban "convenience" kit that I would actually find useful. This would be an extremely poor kit to carry in the Amazon jungle, but highly beneficial to have at work, home, out of town travel and during errands in an urban environment.

I can't believe how many idiots commented on how useless this would be in the wilderness, rainforest, etc. The man CLEARLY states this is an urban kit, meant to contain things you might need in your every day normal life. NOT an emergency survival situation. Great kit, and awesome video. If I would add one thing, it would be a small desiccant pack to keep the contents nice and dry - especially the pills.

I've modeled my tin after yours. I made a few changes. I also found some of the items on Amazon for way cheaper than PDF listed them. One tip for you, the pills make a lot of noise in the mini tin. So loud while walking around. I put a ball of cotton to silence it and it can also double as tinder for fire starting

I've watched dozens of these and did an "unexpected overnight" tin since I travel a lot. I was really surprised by how many people take the time to chastise you for not having a way to fish in the sewers or spear a pigeon. I have a more camp/survival tin but made my unexpected overnight after watching this video. Having some extra hygiene items in an environment where it's extremely unlikely you'll be without shelter and food but very likely you'll need medicine, a band aid, or a breath freshener if you end up overnight in an airport or on a couch it's nice to have it all in one place. Thanks for the video, and thanks for sharing a perspective that made me look at these kits in a different way. Forget the trolls.

Really like your videos about prepping. I used to live Tacoma, WA. but now live in Mpls./St. Paul. So, I don't have the rain you do but lots of snow. So, being stuck in your car in the Winter is a very real possibility. Keep up the videos. They are very interesting and informative.

I can't believe all the haters' comments. Funny that they are likely all about carrying giant "survival blades" that can chop firewood, but what good will that do you in an urban environment? Hence the title, "urban EDC tin." I think it's a proper and well-thought collection with some high quality little items. Thanks for sharing.

Anyway, I think your videos are very professional and very well done. I'm not a prepper but I do keep water in the basement, spare fuel for cooking, a jacket in my car, and canned goods in the pantry. You never know. I live near toledo and rely on the toledo's water. Water supply was interrupted for three days last week and I was grateful I had twenty gallons of spare water in the basement.

I appreciate the time and effort in creating and posting this video. Quite useful, as are the many others you've made. FYI - I've seen many poor reviews on multiple sites (Amazon, etc.) about the Verbatim Tuff & Tiny USB Drives. Many claim they just stop working and the data is lost. Just letting everyone know so they can review before they purchase. The concept of a USB drive is terrific, perhaps just not this specific product. Please keep up the good work !

9 out of 10 comments below are by imbeciles who think the Zombie Apocalypse is only days away. I have been to dozens of corporate events like week long trade fairs, bus trips and other junkets. I have needed just about every item in your tin at one point or another. I've broken a toe-nail and needed to trim it down, I've had diarrhea, broken the zipper on my pants and had tiny pieces of glass in my foot. I've made bad lunch decisions and needed the occasional mint to talk to customers without stinking of garlic. Great kit. Probably could call it a Corporate Survival Kit as well. Maybe the other blue pill as well. Never know your luck on a company paid weekend.

True. The Tools mini tin is not often used, and when it is used I am usually at a desk, so I have never lost an item before. I like having them stored in that tin rather than float around loosely like you see with many other Altoids tins.

I've used it for opening boxes at work, cutting cords, etc. Even for meals where I don't have a proper food knife but I need to cut my food. I also use the screwdrivers for tightening furniture, handles, etc. The little chisel for scraping glue, gouging out openings, and such.

This is such a great kit! A lot of people apparently don't know the difference between a survival kit and an urban survival kit. The only things i would add would be a mini lock picking set (easily made from wiper blade inserts) a couple hair pins, and a small neodymium magnet (combined with the sewing string its useful for retrieving a dropped item in a hard to get to area, like a vent) But this is a VERY great kit as is! A+

Tell people to put several pills in a tin and keep it in your pocket... brilliance! It is illegal to carry pills of any kind outside of a labeled container in the US... you can get nailed for intent to distribute narcotics.
@Blurnanza
@Blurnanza 10 жыл бұрын
You are wrong and or confused. Non prescription pills are perfectly fine to carry without the bottle. Also, you can only get busted for intent to distribute narcotics if you are carrying schedule 2 or above controlled drugs without your Rx bottle or a printout of your Rx. Schedule 2 drugs are medicines such as morphine, oxycodone, adderall, ect. So unless you are carrying around controlled substances, it is perfectly fine.

this has nothing to do with survival. its more of, do you have money to buy a titanium whistle and some ultra thin crazy brand name nail clippers, man-scaping, hangover, where'd i leave my keys, conversation starter, too much time on my hands and money to throw away kit. does a survival kit need gum or mints?! i understand its for you, and thats cool. but its mislabeled. i think the idea of the pic and the numbers inside are fantastic, never seen another kit with that.

Not exactly the items I would choose, but clearly a lot of thought went into this. If there are mistakes to point out, I'm at the head of the line to point them out. The pills should be separate from each other, ideally in their packaging. Those are not the ideal matches. The only time I've ever seen the need for a whistle is for sports. Those "needles" are pins. No use for pins. Very nice inclusion of the mirror. The razor blade should have a cover. Leatherman lets you down on the Micra. Tge tool set is good, though. Not a perfect kit, but certainly helpful, and better than many.

for everyone complaining this isnt a good survival kit needs to learn, a survival kit is only as good as the person using it, and a good kit is modeled to the needs of its user, thats why the survival kits in a can preassembled arent the best, there not personally customized, i have plenty of woods around me and water, so i could use hooks and snares, but if your in an urban enviroment, why would you need them, hes got what he needs so thats all that matters

TheUrbanPrepper Thanks for clarifying; i was trying to figure out why one would need quarters for a parking meter during a zombie apocalypse. I'm pretty sure the slow, fat meter maids will be the first to be eaten and/or turned. And even if some survive (or if it's a non-zombie national emergency), I doubt they would be out writing tickets.

How is this a survival kit? What are you surviving from, a bad piece of fish at a restaurant? Such bull crap.
@TheUrbanPrepper
@TheUrbanPrepper 10 жыл бұрын
Almost every Survival Kit you will find on KZbin or the internet in general will include things such as fire starting capabilities, a knife, paper/pen, signaling whistle/mirror, first aid supplies, mini tweezers for tick/splinter removal, medications, etc; all of which are included in this tin. However, it appears that if you also include additional items for EDC/convenience such as clippers and incense, it somehow nullifies all of the previous "survival" items? These types of tins are custom made to everyone's local region and personal needs. Having a bad piece of fish at a restaurant can certainly become an emergency if you are on a date or perhaps without immediate access to proper intestinal medications. This may not be "bull crap", but it's definitely a crappy situation. Thanks for watching! Some of this person's kit might be useful in a wilderness survival situation. But it's the type of thing that might be tossed into a coat or pack pocket and forgotten about. The tin would be useful for making charred cloth and everyone should always carry any required medication and some strong pain medicine, bug repellant, sun block and an antihistamine like a couple Epi pens or Benadryl to at least try to treat anaphlactic shock. I believe in Dave Canterbury's 10 C's system and the five redundancies because they are so well integrated, are multifunctional and well thought out. The Ten C's: Cutting tool(s): a full tang, uncoated, high carbon steel belt knife with a 5"+ blade length and a 90 degree spine that will throw a shower of sparks from of a ferro rod onto tinder Combustion device(s): three BIC lighters and three ferro rods spread through your pockets and pack a magnifying glass of at least 5 power, plus multiple tinder items and charred cloth Container: Made of metal, for collecting, boiling/disinfecting water, cooking and making wilderness medicines Cover-the clothing on your body, plus a sleeping bag or wool blanket, a tarp or poncho, an emergency survival bivy and two orange 3-mil plastic drum liners, aka garbage bags Cordage: a one pound roll of #36 bankline, plus at least 25-50 feet of 510 parachute cord, plus whatever other material is appropriate to your location, like climbing rope, carabiners, rappelling devices Compass: with rotating bezel and signal mirror for orienteering and navigation if necessary Cotton Bandanas, orange: hundreds of uses, like slings for broken limbs, headgear, as a container, signalling device, charrable material Candling device: ideally a headlamp with multiple modes including flash mode for signalling Canvas Sail needle: multiple uses, as a tweezer, to mend clothing, tarps, suturing a wound and if magnetized ahead of times, as an improvised compass Cargo Tape: thousands of uses, as tinder, repairing clothes or tarps, shelter construction, etc Five redundant items: Additional cutting tool(s): a folding or bow saw or a good all-purpose axe and a full-sized multi-tool A second metal container: like a mess kit or bush pot, which allows you to boil water with one container and cook, collect water, char cotton or other natural fibers or make wilderness medicines with the other 2% tincture of iodine: as a disinfectant for water, or on wounds (Make sure yo do not have a sensitivity to iodine before using this item) A diamond sharpening rod: to keep your cutting tools sharp A wrist rocket slingshot and a spare set set of extra strength slingshot bands: give you an effective short range weapon that can be adapted to take larger game if used to shoot arrows in a slingbow All of these items will fit in a good dry bag with an air valve, so it can also be used as an improvised flotation device for crossing a watercourse. Then put the dry bag into a good pack sack like the ILBE USMC Main pack. I also recommend carrying a notebook and a few pencils. To put meat in the pot if the slingbow is innefective, carry a frog gig and a single or double barrel breech loading 12 gauge, with either clean bore or modified choke. Now you're well equipped if you get stuck out in the woods overnight. But that isn't the whole story. Preparation is a huge asset and the lack of it might be a death sentence. You need to have the knowledge and skills to improvise, adapt and overcome the challenges you'll surely face if you wish to survive. You must have adequate resources to build shelter, fire and make rescue signals You must have the ability to protect your core temperature and a way to remain fully hydrated. And NEVER go out into the wilderness without leaving a travel itinerary with a responsible person like a forest ranger, police officer, fire department or an adult family member. Itineraries must clearly state a time to go looking for you if you don't check in on time with that responsible entity. And finally, a positive and realistic attitude and strong self esteem will help you when things don't always go your way. As Churchill said, we will never give up!

I have no idea if this has been mentioned or not, but I would suggest keeping drugs in original packages if they aren't used quite often. Those tins probably won't keep moisture out and that will shorten their shelf life. And if possible, I would include paracetamol and take that together with ibuprofein in case of more severe pain. It's also quite effective drug to treat fever.

I just printed your PDF file. You obviously spent some time and gave a lot of thought to this nicely planned and professional looking document. Thank you for sharing this with us. I wish more people would do this for viewers. Too bad, some don't understand the meaning of your video. Just can't please all, so don't even give it a second thought.

A brilliant idea, I've seen kits for the great outdoors but never for day to day use in the city. Thank you.

There are a lot of negative comments on here. More than likely theses are people that have never been away from home for more than a day. This is a very good kit to keep around, especially if you're in a survival situation.

Love the idea about an everyday kit! I have several of your items in my car, but they roll around the glove box and I can never find them easily. Besides you fit way more in your little tin then I thought to put in my car; it's like Mary Poppins carpet bag. lol

Love the tin and will definitely be making one, and would like to throw a recommendation for a change in your pen. The fisher space pen (telescoping version) is a very useful and dependable high quality pen that will write on wet, oily, rough etc; surfaces and just will not dry out. I had an old one that I lost in my storage for about 2 years and when I found it I used it right away with no trouble whatsoever. They are also very conservative with ink and they are just wonderful.

Great vid, sir! Well, I believe this gentleman carries all the stuff with him not because he wants to show how much a tiny tin could swallow but because he really wants to be prepared. Some of us might raise eyebrows, but hey nobody's forcing us to do the same. Personally I only have the cellphone, the wallet, and a small multitool with me constantly. There might be one day in a year that I wish I have a bandaid or a whistle or something like that with me, but I'd rather roll the dice. Nonetheless it's good to know that someone out there is more prepared and kind enough to share the experience. I might end up carrying a tin like his one day.

i think the important part is to consider what YOUR needs are. if, like me you are mostly in a city, i need to be able to get a ride home, yell for help, fix my car, or call for help... and there simply isn't anyplace to go fishing. you HAVE TO have a good idea of what you actually use for your "normal" kit. i keep a "rural" kit in my car, since the only way i get anywhere near fishing or fire starting needs is ... with my car!

HOW DID YOU DO IT???? You sir have managed to put (at the very least) half of my mothers purse (when i was a small kid and played in it) into an Altoids tin! We used to swear that if she where ever on Let's Make a Deal she would always win the $100 because of all the stuff in her purse. You did however leave out a few of the regulars one could always find in the bottom like a rock or very tiny light bulb, lol. Thanks for the video, brought back very fond memories of my childhood ;)

Agreed, although the Tylenol PM contains the same antihistamine ingredient as Benadryl. But I'm not sure if the dosage is the same. I'd suggest a bit of paper napkin or other padding in the Pills tin to help keep them from breaking as you carry the kit around, but otherwise this is a great idea.

Simple and clean design with very useful items. Ol' Hari should wake up and take a breath down below. Last week my granddaughter fell into some cacti and she was screaming her head off. I could have used the gum to shut her mouth, tweezers to remove the spines and pain relivers for her pain. I would add a small set of ear plugs for the user and be ready with the gaffers tape in case treatment goes south and fists start flying. Find this kit very usefull. Will be making some for my family .

Hey, What's so special about Altoids or Sucrets containers for survival kits, Survival Resources sells discreet either Silver/Aluminum toned or Gold altoids size containers more suited to be used for mini survival kits. Better yet, Best Glide sells larger aluminum survival kit boxes w a rolled top compression bar. The empty Best Glide is large enough to boil water for purification/pasteurization.

btw, for your incense (assuming you want incense to travel with, i like it myself)... unless you have a strong preference, get the "no stick" Japanese incense it makes far less soot, and fewer people are allergic to it, there is no wood, just pressed incense and pure wood/spice. most people know Morningstar brand, its pretty well all over, made by Nippon Kodo, they make a higher end as well... Shoyeido is their competition, and they make some awesome credit card sized travel incense kits that would probably be already the right size.

Great video. You have some very nice items in it. One suggestion I might make, is to make an addition to your pill box. While this is an urban orientated kit , the chance of dealing with heart burn from spicy food in a survival situation is very unlikely. It appears that there is still plenty of room in that box to add some Benadryl. An allergic reaction is a lot more likely then heartburn. I would switch to Tagamet over Zantac. It is a better H1 histamine blocker and great backup for Benadryl.

Induce kit, if you get you needle and thread, put the needle along side a match stick wrap the thread all the was round and secure in a small nick in the end, you have no sharp edge and the needle can't get bend as well as been self contained. I keep them in shirt pockets etc very handy :)

Lots of people hating, I will say I was hung with this kit as a "survival" kit however I thought about it for a few moments - all this doomsday planning has people forgetting about some of the small day to day things - as mentioned this is a urban survival kit... Survival of the zombie apocalypse, probably not. Survival of the crappy day where the parking structure is closed, you rip your coat, your boss forces you to eat a street dog you know isnt cooked well. This is a great kit for that!

I just used a few of the items yesterday. I used some of the other items the day before. Actually, I use many of the items in this tin almost daily, so I'm a little confused by your comment regarding my survival. For that reason, I don't feel that it is a wasted effort at all, but I respect your opinion. No, I don't watch The Walking Dead although I've heard good things regarding that show.

Nice video & thanks for sharing. Good thinking went into this small kit, as you never know what is around the corner. I have a similar thing I leave in my car for breakdowns or just for when an odd situation comes along. I got very lost late one night driving in The Lake district here in England my little kit kept me warm, as could`nt have the motor running all night. Those that "fail to prepare, prepare to fail". Nice vid again, mant thanks.

Good list for urban kit. I like to keep some nylon chord handy in case I need to improvise a belt or shoe lace. I keep $20 bills stashed in multiple locations - good to see one in the kit. Anti-diarrhea tablets are brilliant, and I always keep some toilet paper compressed in a ziplock bag in my back pack. I would recommend adding a couple of those anti-bacterial wipes that come in the little flat foil packet.
