We have Urban Outfitters in Canada too, so it's likely that the clear cassette player box was for the Canadian market (as well as the American market) since by law, all products sold in Canada have to contain both English and French in the product descriptions, ingredients, instructions, etc. :)

Techmoan did a video about TVs radios and cassette players the reason why they were clear see-through like this is because in prison they wanted to make sure that the prisoners weren't hiding contraband or weapons inside the electronics

I also have one of these players. Had it since 2019, and for being a cheaper player it's satisfying enough, honestly I'm surprised it's lasted this long. While i do have Sony Walkman players, I also have one of those USB Amazon ones. Plus my Clear Tech survived a high fall onto hard concrete. Being born in 1994, I grew up most of my childhood with tapes and cds coexisting in my area. So it is nostalgic for me, and I just enjoy the physical collector aspect.

It's ashame how these are made even cheaper than the cheapest walkman you could even buy in the past and yet they cost 3 times as much. I can still remember buying my very first walkman as a child which was a cheap Lennox sound however it was only 10 bucks and although the radio portion was mono the cassette player was stereo and it not only came with headphones it even had speakers that it came with too.
@thedood79662 жыл бұрын
it's sad to see big name companies not cater to things like that anymore
@83Roboto2 жыл бұрын
I would agree with you that this unit is not worth the $38 price tag. A unit with a mono head and mono radio tuner is really bottom of the barrel. The fact that it is single direction only adds to the unit being overpriced. So your basically left with the novelty of the transparent case. I have seen other units like this that have a stereo head and auto reverse that go for around $25.
@xaenon2 жыл бұрын
Well, that's my gripe with UO. Their inventory is ALL overpriced, lowest-bidder crap, with the UO name plastered on it. So, yeah, you're right. It's sold solely under the gimmick-y aspects. UO also sold a 'custom' Victrola portable record player with the UO name emblazoned on it. At like almost double the price of the functionally-identical Victrola you could buy at Walmart. Just payin' for the name and gimmicks, and not the actual product.

We used to call non Walkmans, personal stereos. I guess this is a personal mono. I bought a Chinese new personal stereo, basic but fine. and a very good 1988 Sony Walkman BF 22 which I use daily. I have to say the clip, that you hate so much, allows my Walkman to stick to my pocket and not come off as I walk down the street or jump on public transport. PS It's Kevin McLeod (pronounced McCloud)

I got one of these used for 16, I was looking at older walkmans but you then potentially run into issues with belts, build up of dirt and electronics failing. I enjoy retro tech I have the old stuff but sometimes I just want something that will work and is not going to break on me. The clear shell means you can see your tape. Yes its mono but cheap units like this where common in the 80s. This wont meet audiophile standards BUT lets be real.
@thefamilydad86352 жыл бұрын
My gripe isn’t so much that this player is junk (fun junk, at least) but that basically ALL modern cassette players are junk. If someone picks this up and decides they’re into cassettes, unlike turntables, there’s no “high grade” units to move up to.

Geez! I remember I got my first walkman when I was in Middle school. I also remember you are prohibited from bringing your walkmans to school other wise the school would have arrested and charged with possession of ilegal drugs since they are considered a drug according to the Las Cruces Public School district.

Suggestion: Commonplace use of the term "pre-recorded tape" is for commercially-produced tapes. To avoid confusion, perhaps the term "self-recorded tape" is a better description for tapes you or a friend have recorded yourselves. For someone who wants a brand-new unit like this, Target sells a Jensen-branded cassette/radio walkman player, the SCR-75, for under US$20 (currently US$13.99). This may well be a very similar unit. I own its predecessor the Jensen SCR-68C bought three years ago from Target for $15 and it provides adequate tape playback and good radio reception.

FYI many products imported from China and sold at Dollar Tree stores bear bilingual French/English packaging, i.e. products produced by Greenbiar International. This simplifies bulk purchasing and distribution as Dollar Tree operates stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. Those of us living close to the Canada/US border have often taken short trips to Canada and are more familiar with bilingual packaging.

My cheap Jensen I bought about 7 or 8 years ago cost $15 out the door. As bad as it is, it's $20 better than that piece of crap you're reviewing. $38 is an awful lot of thievery considering the unit at most should only cost $15, but is more realistically worth $7 or $8. It's a PITA that's also a POS...

I love physical media but if there's one thing I don't miss it's portable tape or CD players. I don't really even understand why someone would want to carry around a bunch of tapes or CD's when they have access to almost everything ever recorded on their phones. I mean, I understand the nostalgia but it is in the realm of tunes on the go that the obsolescence of physical media is most obvious.
