i work at Urban, and were usually supposed to catch all the dime outs as we scan for lower prices. so when we miss one were not supposed to sell them for a dime, it has to be lowest ticketed price. just the company's rule!

I used to work retail and we would have stuff "penny out" meaning yes, it rang up for a penny. Technically we weren't even supposed to sell them but the store manager said something like "just let them have it, then go clear out all of the penny items. It's more important to have a happy customer."

I work at Hot Topic and we have a similar thing. When we are supposed to take an item of the shelf because we are no longer selling it, it becomes marked out of stock, and when scanned will ring up as one cent. We have to put the price on the tag because we cannot sell it for a penny, but we can't just be like NO YOU CANT BUY THIS WE JUST FORGOT TO PULL THE STOCK. Like it's a normal thing that happens I don't think they meant to be rude.

At my old work, if something came up at a penny (meaning it shouldn't have been on the sales floor and was recalled) we had to sell it to the customer at a penny, you weren't allowed to change the price. I actually got a ton of books for a penny because of that :)

That dime out thing is common in retail... it probably means it was supposed to be packed away/sent back for whatever reason. At the retailer I work at things that need to be packed away/are on a recall notice ring up as $888.88. That way nobody wants to buy them anyway.
