Nice size tree. It is nice to be young and strong. I am 61 years old now and enjoyed cutting trees in my young years. That heavy lifting will take it toll on you 40 years down the road. Use everything your can find to help reduce the damage you do to your body. I wish I would have known this myself, i'm now paying for it

too funny. I am sitting here, 61 also, and thinking the exact same thing. "work smarter not harder" is something I wish I followed when I was younger. I too am paying the price today.

When I was twenty, just out’a college, I thought I was gonna live forever. 40 years later, like these fellow-old guys, I think “should’ve taken better care”; I’m apparently gonna live forever (or at least into my nineties).

This looks like a-lot of fun and exciting just waiting to see what the next cut is going to look like! My heart is racing just imagining how much money each slab is worth WOW! Since we are talking about wear and tare on our bodies damn I wish that stood up to my boss 25yrs ago Iam 47now I was in excellent health & strong as an ox! I was working two full-time jobs saving up money before going into the police academy when I broke my back wiping away my dreams and after watching your videos it breaks my heart that I could have been doing exactly what you do and not having to worry about money and possibly loosing my home shute I haven't even been fishing in 2 yrs ! Watching you and your friends working/playing in my mind takes the place of going out to the movies ! Your videos should be labeled "adventures in woodworking" THANKS

I once got a whole walnut tree for free. This guy originally wanted $100 for it and kept coming back every few days dropping the price. Finally it was free if he could just get it off his truck! Of course I had to mill the whole thing myself with my chain saw. That was a LOT of work but I got a few nice things out of it. Thanks for the experience Matt!

Nope snow in Florida is not common. My grandma lives down there and one time the bridge connecting Pensacola Florida to Lillian Alabama froze over with like 1/8 in of ice, nobody drove on it thinking they would go right off the side of the bridge. The bridge didn't have enough ice on it to cause any damage anyway.

As a professional arborist, I admire Brandon's work ethic, enthusiasm, and generosity. I also have a few safety concerns. A lot of people get away with using rock climbing gear, but it is not recommended. You should have two separate tie-in points any time that you are using a chain saw in a tree, typically a climbing rope and a safety lanyard. You should always wear a helmet. All ropes that support your weight should have a 5400lb minimum breaking strength, and all hardware should have a 24Kn minimum breaking strength. I know the equipment is expensive, but it is money well spent. Stay safe out there.

Just a suggestion. Add a polarizer filter/ circular polarizer (CPL) to your lens to cut the glare on the water. This will allow us to see the grain through the water. Same principle as fishermen wearing polarized lenses to see fish.

I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I live in an area ripe with tree service companies (small ones) and have no idea what/how they process removed trees. Most bring a chipper for the small stuff and haul away the large units for either firewood processing or dump drops. I'll look into it. I'm not interested in milling wood but I can appreciate the effort and skill that you use in doing it. Great video.

I know your work involves wood, but I see alot of trees here (ash especially) getting the saw. Worst of all, I watched a tree get completely chipped! I mean 20" diameter! That was lumber or furniture grade ash! I've had a 70yr old tree cut (its firewood now, to last several seasons) and had I been a sub'r three years ago, I would have had it slabbed and dried as oak (it was 80' tall and had a split so... it had to come down). Nice to see you repurpose the trees! Don't forget to plant some too!

Have you ever considered routing your cable in a pull pull fashion? Cable anchored on one end, then through a pulley and up to the winch, then a few wraps around the windy and back down to another pulley then anchor to the other end with a turn buckle for tension adjustment? Disadvantage is you have to crank both directions, advantage is no slack or tangles. Nice temp and lots of green out there today lol. Cheers.

That mill you built with your own two hands! Wow, and here I am trying to save enough to buy the green thing from Harbor Freight, so I can mill a few boards from my firewood pile. Back when I worked as a Community Forester for my city, I tried to convince the city to mill, take downs, to sell back to the city wood workers. It was a no go. (people will think we're taking trees down just to sell them.") Sigh. I've got my own wood lot now that I'm retired, and want to do some lumbering and milling on a small scale... Yeah, even the Harbor Freight thing is better than nothing, I think.

LOL...."I know yer hurtin' for cash, SO I'll cut the tree down for free if I can have the logs". Nothing beats making 2-3 grand for 2 days work. My middle son bought an old property with a couple of HUGE walnuts that were way past their prime. Both had big burls. ONE day of Craigslist ad and 3 guys got into a 'bidding war'. He took the middle bid because the guy promised to make the property look like the trees were never there. And he did. $2K net for 2 trees he'd have had to pay that much to remove and he was ready for lawn in 3 days. As a bonus, the crew cut the small stuff into fireplace lengths for him. Win, win, win.

On the hand crank you use to feed the saw forward you should make the cable longer so it can wrap around the end of the bed with some pulleys and bring the cable back to band saw carriage on the other side. You'll probably have to change the gear ratio or get a different wench because it would make the feed rate slower but it would feed the saw forward evenly from both sides.

Walnut is currently over $13 a board foot. Plain sawn, no figure. A tree is a valuable item.

Similar to the old drinking game, Hi Bob. It was played while watching Bob Newhart Show..... everyone drank any time someone said, “Hi Bob.”

Some kids like to play in a pile of autumn leaves. It's only a matter of time, Matt's kids will be playin' in a pile of sawdust.

Your neighbors sure are "swell"!! I love what you do- I'm a tree guy and I do the same with some of my wood but on a smaller scale. I'm also a welder fabricator, and I love your bandsaw/trailer/etc! It looks like you live in a pretty residentially zoned neighborhood...a pretty nice one at that! HOW?!? do you get away with your level of industry and production in your yard without complaints from neighbors? Burl-Bowls full of BBQ and/or Baked Goods?

since you seem to cut everything into 2" slabs but lets say most of the stuff you need is 0.750" for cabinet making, would you be better of milling everything down to 1"?
