Urban Worm Bag Update - BABY Worms!! 8/20/2023

The African Nightcrawlers are showing how they can chow down on some food. While the bedding on top wasn't touched much the bedding and food below was gone except for the corn cobs. With that I'm pretty sure we found a bunch of baby worms!

That was so cool how the corn cob's core stayed intact when you snapped the cob in half. Those are some big-ass ENCs!

I was shocked as well as I've never had that happen before but I think that is because normally I can't break them at this point. They are ANCs which is why they are so big.

It is and I need it to take off with the other systems as I have a bunch of containers with food scraps I really need to empty.

If you have the ability, try using a combo of shredded leaves and cardboard. Fill a 50 gal trash can with shredded leaves wait for some to start to decompose, take from the bottom. The microbes from the leaf mold provide worms with a lot a better product to break down. You’ll have more castings quicker than cardboard alone. The cardboard is great and I still use them but more as a supplemental bedding to the shredded leaves (70/30 blend). But my harvests have been quicker and about 1.5x more castings with little to no unfinished material. A lot more beneficial nutrients as well.

I was wondering how do the critters get in the bin? Do they come in with the card board, pine shavings, food even though it’s frozen, crawl in? I spray the floor around my bin for ants. But never see anything crawling up the sides. Just wondering.

This is sitting in my basement so I'm not sure but things might be coming in from that but a lot of these things just showed up in my systems although there are times I've used food scraps that aren't frozen so they might have come from there. I typically freeze everything to try and prevent fruit flies and fungus gnats.
