The beauty of Quail is that you can do that. Easy bird to keep vs. Chicken so you can learn on the fly with great KZbinrs. And fortunately, there is a LOT of Quail info. on KZbin and online from people raising them and giving good tips for us newbies. You got into it at the right time, it's popular now and literally being called, "the new Chicken". Great bird for beginners, so many advantages over Chickens and with the low cost of startup and convenience of keeping them literally anywhere, is very appealing. Especially to the urban Farmer.

I got a very late start on mowing grass because mower was broke down.When I finally got to it the grass was pretty tall and was seeding already. I had big clumps all over the place. As it dried a bit the grass was really lite and fluffy.I ended up by accident needing some bedding to line the bottom of a couple boxes. .The grass turns into like a matt and the birds really like the stuff.It absorbs moister better than shavings and when you change it ,you can just roll it up in one piece.There are a lot of little green seeds that the birds seem to like.One clump had a couple little beatles crawling around on it and of course they all wanted it. Had to be the very first bug they had ever seen. Beware! You will fall in love with these birds .

I actually DO have quail in my apartment. It isnt ideal esp when roosters get to crowing. but I only have a few birds so it isnt too bad. I find it is better to use solid bottom cages with shavings so I use rabbit cages for pet rabbits you can get in a pet store. I have to clean the shavings out pretty much every day. I have 3 cages plus my brooder. I keep 5 or 6 adults in each cage. I eat the extra males as soon as they are 5 or 6 weeks old. It would be great if I had a house with a yard or at least a garage but well I do what I can with what I have. It was this video that convinced me to do this, it was an absolutely crazy idea to raise quail in my apt but its working.

I had an idea. If you invert your 70L tub, line the opening with 10mm mesh, and stack it in a wooden shelf, you can use the lid as a "catch tray" lined with hay to catch the droppings for easy cleaning and composting. You can cut a simply hinged and latched door into the plastic side for access to quails, feeders and waterers. The system could be based on shelves and build in modular fashion.

FYI: Cedar shavings cause respiratory infections in Coturnix which often leads to death.
@UrbanAviary
@UrbanAviary 7 жыл бұрын
That is actually a complete fallacy. I have found no scientific studies to back that up, just people on forums regurgitating an urban myth with no base of origin. It's one of those misnomers out there like quail breaking their necks if cages are too tall, or calling any white Coturnix Quail a "Texas A&M". I'd be happy to revisit this topic however if you can provide me with a well documented and preformed scientific study. Because I can find absolutely nothing. No disrespect implied here at all, I hope I am conveying sincere respect.

Urban Aviary Cedar is a terrible substrate for reptiles and birds. It can and will cause respiratory issues and can kill your animals, especially reptiles. Calling it a complete fallacy seems ridiculous when a simple Google search can bring up mutiple links on cedar bedding and the issues it can cause, especially over longer periods of time.

I second this, although to be clear it's red cedar that's bad. You can find this in numerous sources across the web. Yellow and sitka cedar are ok, as they don't produce the same oils. Otherwise, thanks for the info!

I thought was a fallacy also, but many years of rescue showed how red cedar dust and bigger pieces get inhaled eaten and drank causing problems and death at times. Though some rodents canines and birds seek out red cedar for their nests.

If you are referring to the big packages of it about 3 or more feet tall and about 1 1/2 to 2 foot L and W, from a farm feed and supply store and typically packed in thick brown paper bag type material, then yes, great suggestion. They run about $20 here in Canada, for the same thing and are an excellent deal. I discovered this long ago, when keeping other cage pets. You get WAY more for your money getting your Pine or whatever shavings from there, than a pet store or the pet section of your local Walmart or similar dept. store. Total rip off, you can get 3-4 times that amount for the same money from a more appropriate source for bigger amounts like livestock purposes. You'll save a tonne of money that way, NEVER get them from a pet store or pet dept. if you can avoid it. The markup on that stuff is absolutely ridiculous, for literally the same thing.

That’s so funny I though I was the only one with the aquarium idea. I have been brooding chickens for the first 3-5 weeks in an old 40 gal I have and was planning on using that and a 135 long divided in two to brood out and raise quail this coming year. I was still planning on getting separate cages for my breeders though.

Hi new sub here, I plan on starting quail in my home, the landlord is no onboard for chickens so I decided to do quail probably in the basement, along with meat rabbits. I think the landlord is worried about noise with the neighbors....I'm glad you mentioned using fish tanks I have 3 from being is the aquarium hobby for years, and I already have a pet angora rabbit so I can use her cedar shavings for the quail. My plan to keep the noise down from the roosters is to on keep one for each tank the rest will be hens, thanks for the great info and ideas!

@@LarkinJackson hi, it went just fine...for 2 1/2 yrs I did quail only in my basement (not recommended with the finished basement we had at the time, the carpet constantly needed steam cleaning so it didn't smell like bird droppings even though they never we're on the rug)...we raised and harvested a many quail during this time. We kept the rabbits in the garage and I couldn't get my boy to properly mate with my females (probably because he was to fat ) so they became pets. Fast forward to today I just moved on my own property and I'm starting my quail breeding again and I have new rabbits along with my original 2 females and a slew of chickens and turkey's. It's been less then a month I've been on my property and I already have 30 quail eggs and 12 Serama chicken eggs in the incubator....thanks for asking ! Have a great day

So Ive been looking into getting quail for a few years, and this past weekend I saw someone selling coturnix quail for $2 each, and they looked fully grown. I was so excited I bought 25, and forgot to ask how old they were. I have been feeding them a grain mix with some added dried mealworms for extra protein. What age do coturnix quail usually start laying? They are about the size of a tennis ball.

Thank you for all your help
@UrbanAviary
@UrbanAviary 6 жыл бұрын
For meat and eggs production the Bobwhite is inferior in every way. They grow slower, lay later and only lay seasonally. Coturnix will lay year round. Bob White's also often have regulations on them because they are a game bird. I don't see any reason to get bob-whites if you want meat and eggs.

Florida is a GREAT place for these birds! They are a tropical bird and will do very well there. Make sure they always have good access to water and shade and they will thrive! And as for the noise, they are really all the same. I am just talking about Coturnix Quail here. The hens are almost silent and the roosters aren't all that obnoxious. Well not to me anyways. Some roosters are quieter than others, just depends on the individual bird. You can watch for your quieter roosters and get rid of the rest so that you only pass on genetics of quieter roosters. They don't crow as often when their aren't many other roosters around also. I really hope you pull the trigger on this, it's definitely worth it. Hope that helps!

Is it better to keep bobwhite quail in pairs? (One male to one female)
@UrbanAviary
@UrbanAviary 6 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest, I don't know much about bobwhites. But from what I understand there shouldn't be a problem with a male breeding a pair of hens.

can you mix your own feed????
@UrbanAviary
@UrbanAviary 7 жыл бұрын
+Ethan Maaske It's very tough to source all the different ingredients to make it. If you were doing a very large operation running hundreds of quail then it might make sense but not for small scale. Is there something specific you want with your feed? Or maybe just wanting to be more self reliant?

Urban Aviary i was wondering if they could eat wheat or ground corn with vegtable scraps or sunflowers seeds if all that would be a humane diet. im not against feed just would like to feed em in the depression from the land
@UrbanAviary

I imagine you can, but I'm not a nutritionist and don't pretend to be one. But I imagine that a variety of grains along with veggies and a good source of high protein would be good.

Urban Aviary Did you get to your quota? I'm interested. How well do quail tolerate cold once they are feathered out? We are going into summer here in California, so it isn't an issue right now. I think I can come up with a hundred gallon tank for indoors, but I was also thinking about raising them in an atrium.
