What a sad sight to see, I spent most of my childhood in here, in particular the summer holidays of 99 - 03. A whole group of us from our street would stomp down, we always made the best of it playing hide and seek, chasing each other around the pools, hurdling the inflatables, the odd winch ha! Always remember the dance tunes of the late 90s and early 00s blasting thru the PA system. Learned to swim in the big pool as well. I'll always remember the strong smell of chlorine hitting you as you walked through the main entrance. The place was a buzz as a kid. We used to search the lockers for left behind 20pences and go to the chip boat and chip in for a bag of chips and a tub of curry sauce - sometimes 2 if we were lucky, simpler times 😅

It's genuinely heartbreaking to me seeing it in such a state. I have very fond memories of being there in the 00's with my dad. It was like a special thing for us, we'd go swimming in the play drome which is where I swam under water for the first time, the flumes were always my favourite part. After swimming we'd go to a nearby chippy shaped like a ship, I don't know it's real name but we called it the chip ship and that was our day out. I'm 22 now so I was just a little kid.

I know this is an old video but I really and appreciate your Scottish videos as a person from Scotland. Glasgow in particular. I used to see the abandoned schools of Glasgow all the time but now there's only 4/5 left of the 8 I used to regularly visit with my brother. Greenfield, Tureen Street, St James and Golfhill. Used to also go see Drumoyne, Haghill, Queen Mary and John Maxwell. JM is still standing but had been confirmed for demolition which really sucks. These schools were a big bonding thing between my brother and I as we both have the same passion for history and abandoned things and they were amazing to visit, take photos of and talk about

all of these comments, saying their memories here are from the older generation. from someone who is 17 and came from a low income family , coming to the playdrome was always such a treat. i'm glad that when the playdrome closed i was able to venture out to other pools because it came for affordable. Fantastic video mate. My friends and I used to play skater hockey in the sports hall. Those barriers they separated the space with were quite unstable, and if you hit one a bit too hard, the section would collapse and you'd end up in the middle of someone's badminton game. Once I crashed into the doors on the other side and ended up in the carpet bowls area. It was an amazing facility, and we never found a better venue.

The playdrome was fantastic, got a bit tired near the end but just needed a little TLC. My wee one loved it, lots of pool areas and the flumes were great too. Went to the new one once when it opened. The tunnel slide was fun, as was the other one, which you used a float to go down, and I remember people getting stuck on the flat part where you have to go a certain way. We got stuck as well due to the rotating currents haha. I remember, in the early 00s using the huge hall as a rented space for birthday parties with inflatable castles as well. It was very interesting to see inside the Playdrome again after its closure as I'd visited this facility many times over the years. I recognised so much of the interior as I had used the swimming pool regularly and also the water slides & fun pools in addition to the main hall for badminton, so it was quite sad to see how deteriorated and vandalised it has become. We know that it will be demolished and will never reopen so the damage it has received doesn't really matter, however I do have a lot of very positive memories of good times spent in the Playdrome. I am surprised at how short its life span was. Most people would have believed that it would serve the town for a lot longer than it did.

This is better than what we have know in Yorkshire . What a total waste of a great facility we could only dream of
@BenBradleyMusic4 жыл бұрын
@@davidpearce9514 You are right, it is a waste of a great facility. It should have remained in use for much longer. The reason it didn't was that it was replaced with something else.

I used to work for Stuart Leisure, the slide manufacturer, who were based right down south on Denton Island in Newhaven (long since bankrupt), whilst I wasn’t involved in the construction of this site I did work on building the slides at Greenock just down the road.

I cant believe how wasteful this is. I would love a facility like this near me . I think it's sad that it's been abandoned when all probably really needed was smartening up
@grobbler14 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, the local council do not look after things. The building was in use for only 25 years and not maintained properly. A new facility has been built at the waterfront and the same thing will happen there. Money wasted needlessly through incompetence.
@grobbler14 жыл бұрын
@Stormtrooper1488 I've yet to hear of anything sanctioned by a local council being built for the same or less than a private project. A garden shed properly looked after can last longer than the Playdrome did. Basic ongoing maintenance negates the need for intensive maintenance.

@@grobbler1 big backhanders to build a new one by the sounds of it. We have got a waterpark like this in windsor and it's about the same age. Currently its having a refurb so it can be done.. shame

@Stormtrooper1488 the new pool is absolute dog shit in comparison tho, a hell of a lot smaller with a lot less to do.. 1 small flume and a wave machine with all the kids crammed into 1 pool cause the other is always shut for swimming lessons and the sauna/steam room part is laughable.

Sad to see places like this abandoned. Looks very similar to Waterworld in York, which was knocked down for space to build a stadium. Had so many childhood memories there

Great, thanks for filming this. I’ve been saying for ages I’d love to go in and see what it’s like now in there. You’ve let me tick that off my list! Many happy memories from there! Cheers Urbandoned.

Such a surreal feeling watching this! Used to bloody love this place. Came around once a month throughout early 2000s. Have so many great memories. The second really wide slide was for inflatable rings which you sat on and went down the slides. Crazy seeing it in such terrible condition compared to how I remember it!

This is amazing. Many good memories here when I was a kid. My dad did have a bad accident tho at the bottom of the 2 slides. He turned right and fell off the wall landing in the entrance to the big pool that had the wave machine. Free few days swimming after that happy days lol

It's always a case of money isn't it. It would probably have cost more to upkeep than build a new facility. Sad.

the upkeep of it was probably more expensive in the long run, so they would rather just make a new one.
