+Danny Schwab Hey Danny, thanks for the kind words. I have some videos on making your own soft plastic lures you might like too. You know what I'm thankful for? People like you in the world; that idea of taking kids fishing sounds like it would do so much good. Fishing can teach kids about patience, respect for the environment and animals for food, comradeship, hand eye coordination, and a whole range of other simple, yet important life skills. Good on you for doing something positive for those kid's lives and the world. And thanks for watching. Jim.

I don't make someone believe I asked them if they do. And I've gave so many rod and Reels away and I'll ask you want this they're yes please. I say if I give you promise to fish alot keep and not sale it. They say yes. I'll say hey and only if we've spoke about god. But say you say a good pray for me you and all are family. You can have for ever. I've been brought to tears kids they have a better heart than adults. When they pray it's from there heart not just thanks do this do that amen. But after some prayers I'll ask do y'all go to church they're yea all the time. So it warms my heart when I have enough and good stuff to give away. My uncle used to take us fishing with cane poles when we were kids, about 60 years ago! You could buy them at the hardware store for about 50 cents. They didn't have guides, though. If you want to make a bamboo pole with no guides, tie your string about 2 to 3 feet back from the narrow end, then wrap the line around the pole about 6 times as you draw it to the end of the pole. Then wrap it around the end 3 or 4 times, and tie it again. Uncle Joe said this helped keep the tip from breaking when you had a fish on. He also taught us to measure the line from where it's tied on the tip down to the fat end of the pole, and cut it there. No need to have it any longer than the pole itself since you're not casting. Tie on a hook, fasten a red & white cork float, and dig a few worms. Or roll some bread dough balls, with the soft interior of a slice of white bread - it's surprising how long they actually stay on the hook! Another favorite bait was a slice of hot dog cut in half. Thanks so much for prompting my fond memories of an old uncle, long gone. Bless you!!

I'm 62 years old and I have my grandfather's home made bamboo salt water fishing pole. It has a large Penn reel and very sturdy pole. I need to make some small repairs and reapply the shallac on tje pole. This set is probably around 70 years or older and is still functional.
@UrbanSelfSufficiency5 жыл бұрын
That's awesome. Thanks for sharing, Michael. The poles we used with my dad as a kid visiting his home town were just a bit of line tired too the end of a stick of bamboo. We'd just dunk the hook into the shallow River and catch Bass. Good times.

@@UrbanSelfSufficiency Your video at least gave me an ideal on how I can put the string back around the handle. The pole is 8 feet long and is very stiff. But like I said, it was used for large ocean fish. Can't wait it restore it.

Excellent jop mate But I thing you skip the first step the dry part so your rood have the flexibility that fishing rod needed !
@nakoawarrior31863 жыл бұрын
I'd put the nail polish on first and then the thread,......but I'd use wood glue under and on the thread. You could have attached the eyelets with hot melt glue. But I would have cut it,... carefully cut the limbs off leaving nubs,......the file the nubs down to the ribs then put it on a 2X4 and put nails down the side to hold it as straight as I could and wrap some string around for a controlled dry out side but not directly in the sun. After it dried I'd build a fire and heat the parts that need straightened over coals then bend it straight. In my bed room I just use a candle,......but the bamboo I can find is only 7/16 of an inch. Then I'd sand it and wipe it down with linseed oil to seal it. Then eyelets and a reel. For eyelets I'd hot melt glue them in place and coat the area with wood glue and wrap it with black kite string and at the end cover it with wood glue. Reel attachment can be done with zip ties or hose clamps. The reason you cut off the limbs and sand down the nubs is so you don't compromise the strength of the joints. If you want a stronger pole use a sapling. But same thing let it dry then straighten it.

This looks like a fun project I got a question for you if you would do it again would you have waited for the bamboo to dry completely and then do all the gluing was there any shrinkage when the bamboo dried and you had to re-glue things?
@UrbanSelfSufficiency4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kurt, absolutely. I had a lot of people suggest that and although the shrinkage wasn't bad enough to render the thing useless, I think they're right; it certainly would have helped. I probably would have tried to bind it to something straight while it dried as well, hoping to straighten it out as well. With all that being said, it was never intended to be anything more than a fun weekend project, using old hardware, so I was, and still am, happy with the way it turned out.

Your supposed to torch the rod first to dry it out. It’s going to dry out by itself and might crack or warp in an unwanted way
@UrbanSelfSufficiency6 жыл бұрын
It could I suppose, but it didn't. It dried out without really changing at all. I do live in a subtropical environment though. Perhaps because the average temperature here in Summer was about 32C (~90F) it helped dry it quick enough?
