Dive into the captivating world of Japanese craftsmanship with Koji-San, a master artisan renowned for his skill in handcrafting bamboo Kishu Herazao fishing rods. Step by step, follow Koji-San's meticulous process as he transforms raw bamboo, specifically Sasamorpha borealis, into exquisite fishing rods designed to catch Japanese crucian carp.
Located in Hashimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, Koji-San's workshop is where the magic unfolds. Here, the bamboos - suzutake, madake, and yadake - are carefully selected, dried for several years, and meticulously examined before being crafted into fishing rods. With over one hundred and thirty steps of handiwork, Koji-San brings to life each rod with precision and artistry, from cutting to assembly and finishing.
Notably, these Kishu Herazao rods boast the namitsugi jointing technique to ensure durability and prevent breakage. Each rod, composed of three to five bamboo sections, undergoes rigorous testing to ensure strength and flexibility, making them not only functional but also exquisite works of art.
Join us on a journey through time and tradition as we unveil the masterful craftsmanship behind Japanese Kishu Herazao fishing rods, where beauty meets functionality and artistry intertwines with nature. 🎋🎣 #BambooCraftsmanship #JapaneseFishingRods #KishuHerazao

As an Australian soldier my father went to Japan in 1946 with the British and Commonwealth Occupation Force. He returned to Australia with a love and deep respect for the Japanese. Post-war Japanese imported goods were summarily regarded as cheap and inferior. Not with my father. He bought a new Datsun in motor car in 1962, and over the years he had another five. He knew about japanese quality.

I made an arrow from a bamboo garden stake. It takes a lot of patience to straighten bamboo. However it was the most accurate arrow I ever made. It hit a squirrel target thirty five meters away.

The old British carp record was caught by Chris yates using a bamboo rod (split cane). The fish was 51 pounds ! The rod was named "Excalibur". (Carbon fibre rods are fantastic but nothing can give you the pleasure of bamboo). Its a natural material and us "true" anglers just love the purest forms of fishing) I hope with all my heart that the craftsmen and cultures of individual countries survive in these uncertain "globalists" times).
