I'm back in Turkey with Frank to visit an abandoned ghost town with Disney or fairy tale looking castles and a giant cruise ship. Our first stop is the Burj al Babas ghost town. 587 castles of the 832 have been constructed but the company went bankrupt. The investors promised luxurious villas, but did they kept their promise? We find out.

I find it hard to believe projects like this ever had legitimate beginnings or aims. Architectural taste aside, the kind of person they were supposedly targeting generally wants a unique high end product, not a copy-paste of whatever is next door ad nauseum. When I see projects like this, often in China, I can't help but suspect it is actually some kind of elaborate money laundering scheme or cover for something else. They always seem to have dubious beginnings and similar ends.

This video showed up in my recommendations and it's definitely worth it lol. The whole thing reminded me to a housing complex in Indonesia specifically marketed to be used as vacation houses or "villas". The place is located near a mountain and the houses were designed to mimic "traditional style houses" of different countries. So there's a block of "traditional Japanese style houses", a block of "English castle houses", etc. Looking at it now, it's obvious that they're bad imitations of the originals but people didn't know better back then. This was in early 2000s when most Indonesians don't have internet access or can travel abroad easily to see the real thing. So, weirdly enough the houses sold quite well. Now the whole area is still functioning, but most people have realized it's tackiness. It's now catering to people from the lower social/economic status, the opposite of its original purpose when it was first built.

The project is called ''Burj Al Babas'', as the name is suggesting it was an Arabic project. Local government and people hated them and tried to stop the construction but it was bringing foreign investment so Turkish government allowed it. After 2008 crisis Arabic investors just ran away and the project got ditched later on but with this kind of poor quality it was doomed anyway. I only wish the investment they already made covers the cost of dismantling this ugliness.. By the way there are severe punishments for building dangerous structures in Turkey so nobody can build cheap foundations. However decorations is not considered as dangerous and they could be built from anything really as long as it doesn't risk falling down and hurting people. But even then it is ridiculously low quality and most people who visited the houses could realize it. However the target of project wasn't Turkish people who would visit them rather again Arabic people so it is possible they were going to sell them with only videos and photos that's why they pushed for the cheapest ''good looking'' option.

@@kirkc9643 It is definitely an option but there is a problem who will do it! After investors ran away their Turkish partners went bankrupt and government seized the property. Government could rebuilt them but you know governments before right or wrong they think about how many votes projects would bring and this project is in middle of nowhere so it has very low political value. It could be given out by contract but i doubt it would be financially feasible. Most probably they will rot for years until there is significant public outrage to dismantle them..
@ggoddkkiller1342
@ggoddkkiller1342 2 жыл бұрын
@@vallerypirat9959 Im pretty sure everybody could realize your true intention but still i will answer your nonsense. The real irresponsible thing is talking extreme nonsenses without actually knowing anything about Turkey like you do. After Gölcük earthquake which took 18.373 lives in 1999 construction safety laws got changed dramatically. Before that construction companies could use their own civil engineers to approve construction safety which was causing corruption problems ofc. But now they have to hire a private engineering company specialized on costruction safety and government officials are also inspecting the projects more carefully. So right now anybody wants to construct unsafe buildings has to buy or bribe like 20 people not just a handful like before. Also there are severe punishments issued and building an unsafe construction which causes death is considered as FIRST DEGREE MURDER!! So it is really hard buying those private engineering companies as they could face life sentences same as constructor and their engineers + government officials. People could be still bought with millions of dollars but why not spend those millions to actually construct a safe building, huh?? So pretty much all buildings constructed after 1999 are safe while older ones could be unsafe, in fact during recent İzmir earthquake all collapsed buildings were old ones!! You can blame Turkish government for not inspecting all old buildings and replacing them asap but you can not fabricate a total nonsense as ''there are hundreds of unsafe projects in Turkey and they are selling them to tourists'' which is just a cheap lie...

I understand these are vanity purchases for rich foreigners looking for "investments" but I can't understand why you would buy a house in a beautiful mountain setting like that only to be in a cookie cutter house that's as close to the next one as living in any other town, you go all the way to a rustic landscape and then surround yourself with hundreds of copies of the same house with no decent views. How someone could spend so much money on something like that instead of a beautiful house by itself in the trees is just so strange to me. You go to places like this to get away from the city, if you want to be looking into your neighbors window just buy a house in a town where you don't have to worry the project goes bankrupt. More money than sense.

@@oryxland3994 I think they could have sold it to investors as a Disney paradise. Every girl I've known has had an obsession with Disney stuff to the point where they will buy anything if it's even somewhat related. They really messed up their budgeting and had no margin for error. When things went wrong there was no backup plan they just abandoned ship and let it all go to waste. Overall it's a real tragedy and hopefully some company like Disney buys the castles and finishes them.

If these were some kind of hotel-villa investment scheme, perhaps the low quality of the buildings were intentional. Just like many hotel/ condotel investments going on in Indonesia, the buyers were not investing on houses per-se, but in hotel business, as the properties will be run as rental rooms, for weekend or vacation getaways. That could explain why outer ornaments of the 'castle' were built on stereofoams, as it will be easily repaired during low seasons.
