Hey guys! My experience: After my stone removal procedure, my doc had told me to keep the string stent in for a total of 7 days. After reading multiple comments and reviews on removal, I wondered why my total time in was 7 days and not 3-5 like the typical. But after feeling so anxious for the removal, I didn’t mind the extra few days of it in. Anyways, I didn’t get sleep all night leading up to the removal. I was so anxious and nervous of how badly the experience would go. However, The stent came out within 5 seconds and it barely hurt! It was more of an uncomfortable feeling at the beginning of the pull when the string is still slightly inside which feels like pulling a long hair out of your ass. The aftermath feeling felt amazing tho! It definitely feels much better being outside of my body than in!! Goodluck yall😊 I know reading these comments helped ease my tension so thought i’d share :) There’s nothing to worry about!

@@ravek3761 Mine went fine, just take some meds and get in a hot shower after you pass urine. Bite down on a towel take a few deep breaths, and pull the string in a slow smooth motion and try not to stop until it comes out. Pain isn't as bad as I thought, prob a 4/10 just uncomfortable in a sensitive area. You've probably been through a lot worse pain with the stone and stent so this is not a bad as that. Good luck you'll be fine!

All experiences help others but not all experiences were a breeze and that too needs to be known and acknowledged. In a certain percentage of patients, there are complications with kidney stones and even the removal of the stents. All symptoms and pains and results must be taken seriously to avoid further complications. Good luck everyone and educate yourself about it. Knowledge is power.

I had a stent put in after the kidney stone were removed. I had to remove the stent after 4 days. I was stressing out the whole time the days leading up to it. I read all the comments about the pain during removal and after the removal. I took Tylenol and flomax before doing the procedure. I went to the bathroom and had a towel under me and started pulling it out. It came out easily with urine pouring out with absolutely no pain. I had no pain or bleeding after. I actually felt a lot better after I got it out! Good Luck,

4 yrs. with stent in..didn't know it needed to come out..never spoke or saw the Dr. afterwards..barely saw him before..don't even know who he was...can I go to the er tohave it removed? I can't wait to not have all this pain and blood after so long..I thought this pain was normal..

@@jroberts8082 Wow. Who the hell was this doctor that left the stent in there? The stent is supposed to stay between 1 week and 4 months. Any longer than that will cause stones to form around it. Go to CT scan or XRay first and determine the amount of accumulation of stone around the stent. You may need another major surgery to remove it.

I like everyone else who has had a stent placed had no idea what to expect. My emotions ranged from anxiety, panic to finally calmness; let me get this out. After a lot of water and pain meds. Hi! I know this is an older comment but if you can answer this question for me, I would be forever greatful. My husband has to go today and get a bilateral ureteroscopy and is having a stent put in. I’m not sure if it’s only one stent or stents in both but he has never had stone surgery in the past. They said they think there’s a blockage in his urethra so I was wondering if you had sting removal surgery before or what the reason is for them putting the stent in for you?

FINALLY! Im able to remove the stent today! Im supposed to pull it out 2 days ago (4th day after operation) but it's only today (6th day) that i was able to summon enough courage to do it...if you are watching this right now, either you will have to remove your stent now or will undergo a procedure where the doctor will put a stent in you. So how did i pull it out. Make sure you pee first..I am in a standing position and i slowly pulled the string. When i finally saw the blue stent i pulled it somewhat faster until all of it is out...Make sure you are pulling it in front of the toilet bowl as urine will drip as you pull it... so how does it feel?. It is certainly NOT painful. Definitely unlike a urinary track infection where you feel a sharp burning pain when you pee. Definitely not like that. If you consider the sensation a pain it will only be on a pain scale of one or two max... however it is definitely a very unconfortable feeling. Hard to explain the feeling but i find the "unconfortability" similar to the deep nasal swabbing done on your nose during covid tests. I find pulling the stent a highly uncomfortable sensation... after removing it you will certainly feel a relief. And you will appreciate that peeing seemed to feel "nicer" afterwards ...hope this helps!!!

I am not one to normally comment, but the other comments here convinced me that I could do it on my own. I had scheduled an appointment at my urologist’s office because I was too nervous to do it myself, but after finding this video and reading the comments, I felt like I owed it to myself to give it a shot. I took Tylenol about 30 minutes prior and put a heating pad on me to make sure I wasn’t feeling any pain. I went to the bathroom just before, and I stood in the bathtub while pulling it out. It came out surprisingly easy, much easier than pulling out a tampon would be. I think the stent has a coating that makes it glide, so that helped. I was shocked at how quickly it all happened, and it really didn’t hurt. It was slightly uncomfortable in the beginning like others have said, but not nearly as much as I expected. So glad to be done with my kidney stone experience.

Man I need help. My stent post to be out. I at the emergency room now in all three doctors that have seen today said it needs to be removed that that's what's causing the infection for me to go into septic shock. They want it out to make to make sure the second shot don't come back. But the guy that put the stent in is refusing to take it out

I had a ureteral stone removal surgery 4 days ago. I was left with a string and directions to take it out today. Definitely tried not to psych myself out beforehand bc that will tighten things up in the area. The fear is worse than the act. Ran a warm bath. Took some pain meds, Flomax and an antispasmodic for the at home procedure of stent removal. The warm bath made all the difference. Couldn’t believe how easily it slid out. Almost as if it wanted and needed to come out. The pressure from the stent creates the spasmodic pains. So once it’s outta there, the pain lessens dramatically. Good luck to y’all going thru this urinary hell.

Had kidney stone surgery. Had stent inserted with string attached. Left it in for 5 days. Doctor instructed me to pull it out at home. Took Tylenol. Waited 2 hours. Took deep breath. While exhaling steadily pulled it out. Took three or four seconds. Minimal burning sensation. Nothing to it. Glad to have it out.

I was standing in the shower facing the water so I pulled the sting nice and slow while holding my breath and keeping relaxed down yonder. Once I saw the stent game over it’s a breeeeeeze you’ll pull it out quick 👌👌 I only felt a lil burn at the tip and that’s it. And my bladder had a small amount of pain. Nothing bad tho. Also was a decent bit jittery when it came out lol

@@ryannowak6518 ya you’ll be chillin. at first I thought damn.... ima have to peep the doc again but I said NAH and decided to go nice and slow. Remember to peep a nice hot shower, hold your breath and relax. It’ll be out in no time. Once you see the beginning of the stent it’s a sign on relief. And it comes out easier and more smooth. The only place I felt the stent was at the tip and bladder a bit. No weird feeling in my kidney or ureter. Also think about it. Once you pull the stent out, you can show all your friends and have them tweak out lol

I had to remove my stent after 3 days. Sadly it decided to come out early. At first I felt better, however after an hr I started having major pain. It felt like I had another kidney stone. So I went back to the hospital to make sure. My bladder was just constantly contracting, they gave me meds to stop the contracting I was then able to go home and have been doing great since. That was 3 weeks ago.

I had this done first time the tubes were too small for the urologist to get surgical equipment in the kidneys. Those stayed in three to four weeks. Went back to hospital for surgery and they left stents in for two weeks and removed them in the office. The experience was everything you said and then some. Now I haven’t felt this good in so many years it was well worth it.

Took my wife's stent out just now. She took some pain meds 40-45 minutes before this. I ran some medium to hot bath water, had her lay as much on her back as she could, she was almost completely submerged. She draped her left leg over the tub, I GENTLY pulled on the string and didn't stop until it was completely out, just one very slow pull; it was surprisingly very easy to remove. Almost no resistance. She says she felt almost no pain... she thinks she just siked herself up because of all the reviews of people saying how painful it was. I'm no Dr... but logically, I don't recommend a shower when taking out a stent because the urethra isn't as wet as it could/should be vs bath water. I think that submerging yourself in water would be better for pain. When the Stent was removed, she did urinate in the water to offset any burning she may have had-had she did it dry... and it wasn't bad for her... she did really good. Good luck everyone!

@@Mikeyp1054 this particular stent was designed for self removal. There was no need for the hospital at that point, unless there was a rare mishap while pulling it out. She was actually supposed to remove it herself but was too afraid to.

thank you for this comment. "resistance" is my anxiety. i didn't want to get into a tug of war, and then finding, ive gone too far. which leads to a doc would schedual the follow up pull, if they thought there was a large poss of larger collections not irrigating out of the kidneys, and really just finilizing the procedure width a more thoughouh, analyis, inside but i think its more common for well sized indiviual rocks in there. and much more commonly found in the tube, so theres really no expectation of a high level follow up, and an oppertunity in this situation... to save money, and distance themselves from more liability, from you, and infection.(especially in a covid atmposhere) I personally think its kinda lazy, and uncaring... BUTTT, i get it, and if i was calling the shots, honestly, i would send patients off to do it at home too final thought.... yeah, i suppose it REALLY isn't that bad doing it at home..... if there seems to be so many people doing it now days. they... could have even developed new material in stents that allow this like those two sided finger trap weaves in a much finer nylon mesh (just guessing. .... hmm maybe we should design n sell those on the street corner by the office)

My experience: the actual removal of the stent is not nearly as bad as the dread of doing it. Yeah, its uncomfortable for sure, but not really all that painful. A stubbed toe is worse pain if that helps any. I was fortunate to have it done as a medical office procedure; done while I was standing up. I recommend you have someone else do the pulling if possible; allows you to just “relax” for the 3 seconds it takes. And yes, I felt some better right away and much, much better - an hour later. If I ever have to go through this again, I’ll look forward more to getting that damn thing out of me more than I will dreading the act of doing it. Hope this helps somebody.

@@marisawoods Just saw your comment (seeing that it is recent) and wanted to add, I had a lithotripsy last week and pulled out the stent (1 from each side) five days later. The process was not at all uncomfortable and I felt fine. I was really glad to get them out as having them in gave me bladder urgency and burning etc. However several hours after taking them out I had major pain, and then another one 12 hrs later. Really felt like a kidneystone event, super painful. Turns out they were uretereal spasms which can happen after a stent removal. I would ask the urologist about it and ask if there are any anti spasmodic drugs available.

Thank you being honest about the pain of taking the stent out. I had multiple kidney stone surgeries in 2019-2020 and for my last one I had a stent I removed myself. The removal didn't hurt but it caused my kidney to spasm and was some of the worst pain of my life. Granted, I was down for the count for a couple of days bc of the spasms but I did feel so much better having it out!

22 years ago I had a urologist decide to remove a stent early without anaesthesia. It was brutally painful and I developed Septicemia. My last kidney stone (a year ago) I had to remove my own stent. It was unpleasant but not painful.

I was very terrified of removing my stent at home. Just the slightest pull of the string raised my anxiety and fear of how it would feel and if I would start halfway and be so scared, I would be in a bad situation. As the time grew closer for when I had to take it out, my anxiety increased - I kept thinking: Can they just gas me like they did during the surgery and remove it for me? However, Dr. Chan's video gave me some hope along with my prayers to God. This procedure has been done hundreds of thousands of times, and I kept thinking 10 seconds is really easy, right? So, I got into the shower after I started feeling the urge to urinate, and ran the water a little warmer than usual. I tried to relax as much as possible, but I still was in fear. I asked myself to just pull it a little, and then stop - if it hurt like hell, then I'd stop and think of another plan, else, I'd keep pulling until the end. I firmly grabbed the string with my right hand, and held myself with my left, then slowly started to pull - wow, that moved easily I thought. And then I just kept going, it did not hurt at all, no strange nerves being fired, didn't feel like any raging pain, it wasn't really all that weird either. As the end came, it sorts of felt like I had to urinate. There were a few (very) small bloody pieces that came out, but wow - it sure felt really nice to have that stent taken out. I will follow-up by saying I did take my pain medicine in advance, I am grateful I did - because about 20 mins after I removed my stent, I could feel the raw soreness from the surgery and I also had some mild groin pains. After about an hour, I felt quite normal. If I had to give anyone advice, it's that you are about to remove something that is only scary because you've never done something like that to yourself. Just trust that when you pull, you are not going to hurt yourself nor come out in agonizing pain. Good luck and God bless! :)

I had to have my stent removed today. It had the drawstring on it. When i was discharged i was told to do it myself. So took a painkiller... stood in the shower.. 10 seconds later it wss done! A little bit of pulling in my kidney at first but slid straight out! No more pain ! Thank god!

I have a stent in now. I'm in so much pain it's unbelievable 😫 I actually had a really bad bleed a few days after my surgery, so I'm guessing that's what's causing the severe pain. I just removed my stent (with the string) and the dread was much more than actually doing it. I did not hurt at all and it was barely uncomfortable. I would hope that everyone could have as painless experience as I had. There was some mild stinging after removal for about a minute or so. I did take a pain pill an hour and 20 minutes prior and a flomax 45 minutes prior. I don't think it was necessary though.

Just removed mine myself about a half hour ago. Not going to sugarcoat it for you.. it’s not pleasant. I definitely cried.. ~ but I wear my heart on my sleeve so maybe that’s why. My wife, a nurse, offered to do it, but I wanted to do it myself and I’m glad I did. Just like what everyone else has said in their testimony, it’s over quickly. Just don’t hesitate, if and when you feel pain come on don’t stop pulling. Relax, the best you can, and keep pulling slowly until it’s all the way out. I’m experiencing some aching and soar pain in the ureter where the stent was. Luckily I still have a couple pills of the hydrocodone to help. Just going to rest now and let my body heal. to anyone about to remove the stent at home themselves, It's not that bad. it's very satisfying once you're done as well, removing something so long and cumbersome from your body lol. My personal advice and what i did to make it not too bad at all, take all the pain meds prescribed to you(for me oxybutynin and phenazopyridine so not even any narcotic), some Ibuprofen(helps A LOT with pain and swelling after u take out), wait about 40-45min for all the meds to get into your system, also time when you do it to when you feel like you have to pee really bad so you have a decent amount of urine in bladder, i got in the shower and took a deep breath and when i exhaled held my breath and just started peeing then pulling on string with increasing force as I peed until it inevitably budges and at that point do NOT stop keep pulling and pulling until it's out, while pulling don't look at it as it comes out just stare at a wall or something it makes it significantly easier if u don't watch it lol. Then boom, you're done. If u don't pee while doing it I would imagine it would be a bit more uncomfortable/painful lol. @Dr. Robert Chan I'm no doctor so if anything i said sounds bad feel free to steer ppl away from my strategy haha.

Thank you for this video! I wish I had seen it before I experienced all this. Had a stone, surg, stent twice. First time, the stent had a string and I was able to pull it out from home a week later. No pain with stent or removal. The second time, the stent had no string. It hurt every time I peed, for an hour after. The pain was so bad that I drank less water than I should have, for fear of the pain when peeing. Had to go into surgery center to get it removed a week later, but yes I was awake and it didn't take long. They had me put my heels together and drop my knees off to the side. Doc cleaned the area, put lidocaine in, went in with the camera, found the stent, put some water in, grabbed it, pulled it out. None of that hurt. It just felt VERY WEIRD. Nurse cleaned me up and once I could pee, I could leave. Then I was done, no more pain!

Literally just pulled mine out 5 mins ago. I couldnt take the anxiety to wait until tomorrow. I took my pain med and flomax about 30 mins prior too and I sat in a hot bath just before gathering up the nerve to stand up and pull it out. Seriously it was not bad. A 2 on a scale of pain 1 to 10..it took me 3 secs to pull it out. The thought of it was a million times worse.

Removed my stent this morning. Actually I had my wife do it. I was absolutely terrified. Below is exactly what it was like and a 12 hour follow up after removal so you can have a better idea of what to expect. Leading up to the removal, I was incredibly terrified and scared. I didn’t know what to expect. Last night (the night before removal) I couldn’t sleep. I woke up constantly thinking about what it was going to be like. I get in the shower and start the mental prep to do it. The water is hot and I’m going through the metal prep talks, “You can do this. It’s not that bad. 10 seconds and it’s all over. Just put this behind you. Pull it out and you’ll feel relief.” I grabbed the string and just couldn’t bring myself to do it. I felt defeated. My wife came home and I laid on my bed so she could do it for me. I put a pillow over my face completely terrified of what was to come. I’ve heard so many sides to this: it’s not painful, just uncomfortable. It’s painful. I didn’t feel anything. I felt so much relief immediately afterwards. My experience, though I admit was riddled with fear, in all honesty wasn’t too bad. My wife began to pull on the string. I had no control over it. It was coming out. There was an immediate “burning” sensation. It didn’t hurt, persay, but it didn’t feel good. As she continued to pull, the feeling went away and I felt nothing at all. I felt myself trying to clinch the stent but I knew I had to relax. As she neared the end of the stent, the “burning” sensation came again but was quickly over. Then came the words, “Okay, it’s out. You’re done.” I think it lasted a total of 3 seconds. I stared at the ceiling making sure I wasn’t going to pass out from the buildup to it. But nothing really happened. It was extremely anti-climactic. Just some quick immediate “pain” that went away instantaneously when it was out. It’s 3-4 seconds. Just do it. It’s truly nowhere near as bad as you would imagine. Yea, I guess it’s not comfortable, but it does have a mild pain to it. But I promise…it’s quick and it’s over before you can even fully breathe.

Just had mine removed today! The day before was really when they wanted to pull it but the nurse asked where's the string? I never had no string. Well put your clothes back on. Today they numbed me up went in with a camera. Got the string and before I knew it it was out ! Don't worry like I did! It wasn't bad and the nurses were sweet!

I have passed a couple hundred stones in the last 35 years. Have had lithotripsy 6 times but passed the rest myself. My biggest was an 8 and 9mm. I had my first utereroscopy and stent done 2 days ago. Dr told me to leave it in 3 days. Couldn't urinate for 4hrs after I got home from the procedure. The pressure in my Kidney was the worst I've ever felt. Finally 30 minutes before I was gonna head to the ER i urinated and felt better.. Thanks for explaining why the kidney hurts during urination with the stent in. I learned how to breathe while urinating real fast and that helps. I will probably keep it in 2 more days to be safe and then pull it out.

For the guys, the anxiety and anticipation of having to pull the stent yourself is much worse than the actual process. Here is how I prepped. I had the stent for 5 days, on the 5th day, I took 2 tamsulosin as opposed to 1, I ate a good breakfast and took a 600mg of ibuprofin, 2 Tylenol extra strength and tramadol - all precribed by my urologist. I waited an hour and 15min, got into the shower, built up the nerve and went for it.. I took a deep breath and started a smooth pull of the string. The string in my case was actully pretty long but then i hit the speedbump "the stent". I just kept a smooth pull until it was done. I felt so relieved. it was a slight burn at the tip but nothing crazy. I hope this helps somebody.. you can do it!!

Nothing compares to the pain of a kidney stone or a urinary tract blockage. The relief I felt once the kidney stone was removed was immediate. Although I had a stent inserted, I couldn’t feel it apart from the existing tenderness in my urinary tract when I moved around. Urinating stings a bit, and my kidney had some infection, so I could feel slight discomfort. But again, nothing compares to that small stone that can truly humble you. In the past, people actually died from such complicated infections, which must have been unbearable. I’m grateful for modern medical procedures and the engineering ingenuity that made this possible.

Thanks for this info. I just had 2 stents with strings placed and was told to remoce them muself without much instruction. To say that Im mortified is an understatement. Im ready to try to remove myself but could use any direction and or assistance or advice. Thanks a lot. This video was very helpful to calm my nerves down. I just had a surgery yesterday that didn’t go well because they couldn’t reach the stone because my urethra is too thin. So they left this stent into it, and at first I wasn’t understanding my situation very well, because I’m in Japan at the moment so there was a communication barrier. Stent removal for males... If your here you more then likely are looking for advice on removing a stent yourself (string) I was so worried about this as am sure most males would be,I hope this help... 1 mentally prepare yourself,relax and don't tense up 2 take what ever pain killer meds you have been prescribed or allowed 1 hour before removing ( set a timer) I took, suppositories ,codeine,and Ibuprofen 3 drink as much water as you can prior,I had a 1.5 litre bottle of water,fill your bladder,you should feel like your about to wet yourself as your about to remove the stint. 4 At the hour stage your now ready to remove and should be ready to pass urine,if your not ready run a very small bath and the sound of water should prompt you to do so 5 get in the bath on your knees,legs slightly open, straight back so there is no kink's in your stomach/bladder area 6 control your breathing,relax and on the exhale pull the string straight downwards whilst at the same time let urine flow,if you can 'stop/start' urine to save it that also helps ,keep doing this untill the main stent wire pops out,once you see this keep pulling it out with a gentle steady rhythm,so it feels like one pull,the end will feel a little scratchy coming out put just keep going. Note. It may help to trap the cord around two fingers or in-between for a more controlled pull as pinching and letting go a load of times will just prolong the process. 7 like this comment and send me gifts lol,all jokes aside empty the bath and run a nice fresh one and chill the f out 💯 and drink lots of water. PLEASE NOTE,I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL OR DOCTOR,this worked for me,it may not for you but hopefully it helps someone,do your due diligence and consult your doc etc... Be mindfull of the bath water height as you could pass out,have someone around you just incase. Also to ease pain during the whole stent process,drink lots of water,it dilutes the acidity of your urine so it doesn't feel like your weeing razor blades from hell's pit 🔥

Just did mine today! Chugged water, stood in a nice warm shower and Peed while pulling it to open the urethra more. Had my mom put gloves on and pull once I started peeing. Took some pain meds and oxybutinin to help spasms 30 min before hand. It actually didn't hurt but I did have some kidney and bladder spasms after for a few hours. More meds and a nap. I was more scared than I needed to be about it. Totally helped having someone else pull it out at a medium speed.

I had ESWL 15 years ago (Jan. 2009) for a 6mm stone. No complications of any kind. Stone broke up very easily and I passed a clump of sand (non-painful) during my first urination. I had ESWL again a couple weeks ago (Oct. 30, 2023) for a 10mm stone. Complications required a stent. Bloody discharge, blood in urine, severe aches in flank where stent was placed during urination. Eventually urine cleared up. Then I exercised only 20 minutes for two days and saw blood in urine again. Stent was removed two weeks after insertion via cystoscopy. Most painful parts were insertion of numbing gel which was a quick pain but more uncomfortable than painful and when the cystoscope passed through the prostate. No pain with urination afterwards, though.

This isn't my first time as I make stones pretty regularly, but the stent is the most uncomfortable thing ever!! LOL I know it's there to help, but the struggle (and pain) is real! I had a non string stent in for 4 months, because I changed Urologists due to the first one just...not being good, and the second Urologist was booked up. She removed the old stent, played asteroids inside me and removed all of the fragments (this was 4 days ago) and put a new stent in, but this one has a string on it. I’m supposed to remove it on Monday. I have a panic disorder and suffer from anxiety on any given normal day, to say I’m panicking and terrified to remove the stent myself in two days would be an understatement.

@@drewigi It was no problem. I took some pain meds before hand, though I don’t think I needed them once I saw how taking it out went. I got into the shower, let the warm water flow for a bit, then urinated while gently but firmly pulling the string. It came out in one fluid motion, and urinating while doing it helps not only sort of lubricate it, but it opens everything up, making it easier. There was no pain whatsoever, it just felt really strange. So don’t worry, it really isn’t a big deal at all and is over in 2-3 seconds. I had no pain, no discomfort and just a strange feeling when it was coming out.

I was so nervous and so worked up over it, I had panic attacks for days beforehand (I have a panic disorder) and I put off removing it for two days. After I did remove it I felt silly, because I’ve had more discomfort brushing my beard heh. It just feels really strange to be pulling something out, like your brain can’t really comprehend pulling anything out of there. But really, it goes so smoothly, especially if you follow my advice and take some Tylenol or a little stronger if you have it, maybe 30 mins before you plan to remove it (I also took Xanax..) and the hot shower helps a lot. Urinating I believe helps the most because everything is flowing, so it creates like an easy path to remove it. So take it easy and try not to let it get to you, the thought is so much worse than the actual removal.

They use that thing he showed and it felt like water shot up into my bladder and heavily uncomfortable. It gets worse. After the removal it hurt so bad I couldn't walk. So cheers

I went to the hospital on the 6th of this month with horrible pains, in my back side and stomach. They did a CT scan, and saw I had a large size stone, plus kidney infection. An hour later, I’m on the Operating table getting this procedure done. I just came home from the hospital yesterday. I have to take antibiotics, then call to schedule an appointment for this to get taken out, the stone. I don’t know what they will do about the stent. This stent is uncomfortable. Especially when I have to urinate or try to hold my urine to reach the bathroom. I have an UTI. But this feeling when I urinate is more intense then I remember. It feels like a burning sensation, before you come sensation, needle stick sensation. It’s just a lot of sensations in one, that will bring shock waves to your body. Then the hurt on the side of the stent. It’s just uncomfortable. The last time I had a kidney stone, it passed on it’s own. Why this time it has to be large? Hate I have to go through this. Oh, and this stent will make you feel like you have to use the bathroom a lot. Very annoying.

@MZA yes, after my procedure, I had to pee every hour throughout the night and it would hurt to start the stream, but it got better after a couple of days. But right after I removed the stent , the pain went away! I was all smiles after!🙂 You are a veteran, if you have done it twice!

Had a stone removed under a general anasthetic. They left a catheter in place, did not say anything about the stent. Five days later, the cath was removed and, oh yes, I knew about the stent! Very close to the original stone in the level of pain, but mostly went away immediately afterwards. Small amounts of bleeding for the next two days. Back to normal after that. I learned after that experience, to get the whole story before having any further surgery.

The first time I had to remove one, I took Xanax, pain meds, and a shot of Tito's. I was petrified. I didn't feel a thing. I've removed about 10 now and even though I know it's NBD, I still get nervous, but take something for inflammation about 45 minutes prior. I always beg not to have one and actually recover much quicker without one and with less pain. I had another placed Tuesday, it's coming out Saturday, I can't take it any longer.

This stent has to stay in for 6 weeks, because they couldn't reach the stone, and they hope the stent will widen the ureter so they will have better luck next time. But at this moment the stent causes me more pain than the stone itself.

This comment section gave me a lot of reassurance so I will repay the favor. I just took my stent out with a string. I had surgery three days ago and the doctor said today (Friday to remove it). I took some pain meds and an extra dose of flomax also the prescribed anti spasm med then waited about an hour. I hopped in the warm shower, and pulled. Its important to relax, open up the muscles like when you have to go to the bathroom. It didn't hurt, I was nervous so im not going to lie to you, it doesn't hurt but it doesn't feel good. Its a gross feeling (male here) but it feels so much better once its out. I have slight cramps now an hour after thats it. Doesn't hurt to go like it did with it in. Again, there wasn't any pain and I didn't have to pull real hard either, it came out like it wanted to come out. I would say keeping a nice medium pace going is best, dont prolong the grossness but it was all over in less than 10 seconds. Hopefully some find comfort in this, I know I sure did. Its been a brutal journey to get this far as my fellow kidney stoners know. Good luck

Took mine out last week. Removing it was uncomfortable, but not really painful. I didn't take any pain medication beforehand and it went fine. I would suggest taking it out in the bathtub after taking a shower, since there will likely be some blood.

Had one placed last Thursday and removed it this morning (4 days). I was worried about the potential pain, but after reading around a bit, and watching several other urologists (in addition to Dr. Chan) I was less apprehensive. Just took a Tylenol and an extra FloMax dose about an hour before, then hopped into the shower. It was over pretty quickly and while it wasn’t pleasant, it wasn’t all that bad and was over in about 10 seconds. Probably a 5 max on then pain scale while pulling, then quickly down to a 2 after it came out, to essentially 0 by the time I got dressed after the shower. Just a little tender now but nothing that’s bothering me anymore.

Dr. Chan came into my life in May of 2021, when I was hospitalized with a kidney stone cause of an infection. Then again Nov 2022 and then March 2023. He’s a great doctor. Unfortunately, I was forced to change health insurance & had to change urologist when a kidney stone & infection showed up May 2024.

i just had two stents removed today. it was uncomfortable for sure. right now im dealing with the spasms in the kidney and bladder. that hurts 😢a bit. but a hot bath and to sleep i go. hopefully tomorrow will be a better day 🤷🏽‍♀️🤞🏽
