Fascinating as always. The battle against the deer feels neverending. We finally built a tall feeder stand at the far edge of our property to keep them on that side of things and have our raised bed gardens right up against the house. Can't beat the squirrels though. The raccoons like the feeder stand too and I try to keep a variety of rando foods for them back there. The coyotes really liked the bag of dog food I tossed out there the other day. Unfortunately they're getting hit with mange so we have to keep our dogs far far away (not like we wouldn't otherwise but I don't need them rolling in mangy stuff). My Boston Terrier once tried to befriend a possum before I knew what she was up to. Poor little possum gal was fetal'd as expected but ran off as soon as I caught up to the blossoming (possuming?) friendship!

Was it straight urine, or diluted. Wondered if the deer were put off by the miracle grow, maybe peppermint (a few drops of essential oil in water to spray might help). The spots on the leaves could be mineral defic., or excess, maybe boron or magnesium or ... Thanks for showing your experiment. Have been trying, but not taking notes, might have killed a Feverfew plant with it.

hi, straight urine is too strong for these younger veg and fruit plants..I always diltute. 10 parts water to 1 part urine. For this test I water in once every 2 weeks. One can use more urine and more often when the plants get older and stronger. Infact I use straight urine on bushes and trees no problem. Yes urine can be strong and kill younger plants, burning their roots because it's so nitrogen heavy. It works really well. This is the 5th year I've done this experiement so it's old hat now...I can confidently say it works better than Miracle Grow. If you add in a bit of wood ash (sprinkled at the plant base, it won't stay suspended in the water well) just a teaspoon or so per established regular veggie/fruit plant. The larger the plant the more wood ash

Deer definitely got you. Happens to me all the time. Anything that grows through the fence, gets chomped just like that. Okra is the same as cucumbers. You gotta pick often or the plant slows down alot. I'd like to know which one keeps the bitter hormone away the longest. No matter how hard I try, peak summer here with 98°+ temps make it so unless I'm growing hybrids, I get that bittering hormone that starts to really hinder taste quality for fresh eating. Would be curious if say the urine with wood ash keeps the plant destressed enough to keep that from happening

I'll have to look into the bitterness because I can certainly taste that even in younger cukes..i'm peeling quite a few of them for fresh eating right now.

Ah the Old School Peer channel :-) Natural versus chemical. Even if it was not working great I'd not use MG Always share your food with the critters. I'm feeding a momma raccoon and her three cubs at present

I took Anthony's advice (Palmetto Prepared) and have some sacraficial blueberry's, marionberry and other plants to feed the critters...it's actually worked pretty well to keep them out of my main gardens. Racoon's are not nice to small dogs, esp if they have babies, I know Mr Wolfie is smart enough to keep his distance. Have you ever seen the small "CoyoteVest Small Dog Protection Coats"? might be worth a look.. I hate MG, I only realized fairly recetly that Scotts Miracle Grow and Monsanto are now a partnership...a sort of merger has taken place. I'm boycotting.

@@OldSchoolPrepper Wolfie is disinterested in them and we pee walk him towards the solar panels at dusk and at night. Last year he slipped his collar and went to meet a raccoon kit friend who snarled at him resulting in a fast waddle back to the door. I have seen them. We generally walk with him on leash at night and dusk. We'd likely have trouble fitting one as Wolfie has a tiny head and a huge belly. Good. Chemical fertilizers kill the fungi and make you use it every year

I've been doing both urine + wood chips and urine + wood ash for 2 years and it's worked very well in making quality plant food and mulch. We get free wood chips during the hot season and my husband and son pee on it every day and after a month it's sprouting mushrooms and steaming. It's satisfying watching all that dry carbon melt into the soil. During the cold season I'll dump the wood ash in a hole where my son loves to play fireman and pee out the hot coals under the ash making it poof and hiss and that makes great food for the trees and rose bushes.

I also use wood chips for my deep mulch garden (I call it the "big garden"...I have clay soil so finally wanted to make my own, 7 years later the chips are doing their job

What's the mix ratio on the urine? 10%? And how often?
@OldSchoolPrepper2 ай бұрын
hi Sherm, since i'm testing the urine against Miracle Grow I'm using the MG schedule. so I fertilize every 2 weeks. I pount that out because one can certainly fertilize more often (with urine) especially with well established plants. Trees and bushes can take straight urine. That said I use 1 part urine to 10 parts water. It's an arbitrary amount that I came up with on my own. I feel like it's the closest to the Miracle Grow in strength...but I'm no scientist. I do know that it works and it's free.

Will this work with passion fruit?...
@OldSchoolPrepper2 ай бұрын
for sure....take a look at what you are currently using for fertilizer and look at the NPK values, Human Urine NPK is: 11, 2, 4. If you add in a bit of wood ash at the base AND use the dilute urine that adds an additional N=0, P= 1.5 and K=8 (hard wood ash) which brings the total NPK value up to 11, 4, 12..... I looked up fertilizer for passion fruit and it recommends 10, 5, 20 so the Urine (with some wood ash) would work great! I sprinkle about a tablespoon of wood ash around the base of the plant and then water it in with a 1 part urine to 10 parts water mix (I just put it in a watering can or bucket). If you are thinking of using this on your baby plants, i'd cut back and diluate the urine more or use a lot less of it but i'd use it more often. Like maybe 1 part urine to 15 parts water with a sprinkle of wood ash and water it in 2 x a week. You don't want to burn those baby roots. But if you're talking about a well established tree or bush then I'd say just pee at the base Luis! I literally have my husband on a rotation of my trees and bushs....he hits 1 or 2 each day :)

@OldSchoolPrepper I'm going to try this, but wood ash I'll have to get from someone burning wood.
