My mom is South African. She came to the U.S when she was young. Whenever I'd tell other kids at school about my ethnicity, they'd immediately go to the dumbest questions ever. Like, "did she live in a hut? Do they have water over there? Did she meet tigers/lions/elephants?" Yes, she gnawed on sugarcane and fed monkeys. But no, she did not live in a hut. And she did not ride elephants and hunt zebras with wooden spears. People seem to have the impression that Africa is a barren wasteland. I can't speak for all of Africa, but I know for sure South Africa is not comprised of huts. Where my mom lived, it was a pretty normal-looking city. So when I'd tell them that, they couldn't wrap their heads around it. Come on now 😅

I still don’t understand why the writing has someone from Africa behave like an alien. She’s from another country not a separate planet. She might be confused in a new social setting but she’d still have her own pop culture references and perspective. She’s not a blank slate she’s just new
@xoxoRachelZegerSuperfan7 ай бұрын
It made more sense in 2004 since there wasn’t as much social media
@bsommervold7 ай бұрын
@@xoxoRachelZegerSuperfanI think Lindsay was so good because she didn’t portray the naïveté so literary. Although in both versions I still find it weird how robotic Cady behaves. The mirror scene in particular is weird because cady would understand insecurities it’s just that maybe South African culture ideals creates different ones. But for some reason she doesn’t understand the concept of insecurity
@knoelcourtney46827 ай бұрын
Her intro shot shows that she’s in the middle of no where. Cady wasn’t raised in a town but in the middle of the Savannah with her researcher mother. It makes sense (more so in the old version) why she has no idea about anything popular or up to date on trends. I feel like in modern times they could’ve attempted to explain her lack of phones or something but if there was never an interest I guess she wouldn’t be introduced to it.
@bsommervold7 ай бұрын
I totally get the isolation aspect. What I’m saying is Cady in both versions acts confused about basic concepts that many people understand cross culturally research based upbringing or not. Lindsay definitely acts the part better but Cady acts like she’s never been outside before. I would find her character more believable if her confusion came from culture differences vs her not knowing literal human concepts
@knoelcourtney46827 ай бұрын
@@bsommervold my memory of the original is a bit foggy but 04 Cady’s social issue was mainly based in US slang and high school related issues. It shows in the intro she had been around kids at some point (not for how long) and she’s able to draw parallels to things she already understands (kids acting like animals). Her ineptitude shines in the experiences she couldn’t have at a research base, cliques, shopping and gossip. In the 24 version all we know is that Cady has been isolated in Kenya for who knows how long. I think part of the issue is how the material is adapted making some plot holes shine brightly. Also some of the everyday things we see Cady wouldn’t have the chance to which comes off as outlandish. The main thing I can think of is road safety. I think the biggest problem with the new one is that now we have advanced tech so her confusion makes less sense.

no matter what you thought about it, im glad you gave it a fair shot. i feel like ive seen so many creators just shit on it because it isnt exactly like the movie they grew up with and nitpick every single change made
