It has come to my attention since filming this video that there are concerns about handling bearded dragons and uromastyx at the same time. This is because bearded dragons can carry a skin disease in their saliva that can negatively impact uromastyx. As it turns out, healthy bearded dragons and healthy uromastyx both can carry the disease, but only bearded dragons carry it in their saliva. It is important to mention that it appears that it needs to be introduced into a wound to cause symptoms. If your dragon or uromastyx has a wound, both are at risk of the disease even if they are only exposed to their own species. Probably the biggest risk of placing the two together (even for a short time) would be that since dragons carry the bacteria in their oral cavities, a bite from a dragon could create the wound and introduce the bacteria in one fell swoop. It is reasons like this that we never recommend cohabitating species: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKeaknh7m5eVaaM We have no reason to suspect any ill effects have come to the dragon or the uro used in this video, but we will continue to monitor them, and just want to be sure that you are aware of the potential issues that can arise from exposing these species to one another. For more information, please see the following: www.researchgate.net/publication/23299204_Devriesea_agamarum_causes_dermatitis_in_bearded_dragons_Pogona_vitticeps

I’m thinking of getting a beardy but I’m not sure what to use as their substrate. Newspaper is easy to change but looks bad, sand is off the list cuz of impacting, but carpet looks better although I’m not sure if the poop will stain it/get stuck/trap bacteria that can harm the beardy. Any opinions on this??

Beardie is labeled as a basic pet lizards but damn I have kept reptiles for 20 years and just got my first beardie few moths ago. I never imagined a reptile would actually have such a bond with me. She asks to get out of the enclosure and wants to interract with me all the time. That is something very special that I would have never imagined before finally getting a beardie. Such a worthwhile pet!

You are spot on! My sons, bearded dragon, Herkimer asks every day to come out, and knows the time of day when he’s supposed to come out. He also does not like to go back home. He is a very happy lizard to spend time with people. I really do feel like this is a personable reptile.

I’ve had my yellow Uro for 5 years, it has been a class pet for my kindergarteners. So docile and the kids have the job of feeding. I am the one who holds it only because they are so fast to want to escape. He does love coming out and looking at the class and is pretty social.

I feel like the tendency for uromastyx to hide can be very dependant on who you get them from. My local reptile store has uromastyx that are constantly out and very friendly and curious. If you open the front of one of their tanks, especially the babies, they will come right to you and try to climb out onto you.

I've had both and I think it's Uromastyx all the way! I also had one beardie with a biting issue, never out of aggression, but he would get WAY too excited about food. And a few times he thought I might have food and dove at my hands, mouth open! But my uromastyx was just a doll, so gentle and lovely.

I went out to buy a Bearded Dragon, came home with a Uromastyx instead! To me it was the feeder insects that did it, and that face! They look like a turtle without a shell crossed with an alligator ;) But mine bites A LOT! He is still young, but I've had him 2-3 months, he is still very bitey =P In the Uromastyx video can you go more in to detail about their food? I have a hard time figuring out what to feed him... Most of the items listed as their staple diet I'm only able to find in "ready made salad mix", which is more expensive and usually includes some items I have to remove as well... I want to see if there are any of the more regular whole greens I can find locally to use as his staple diets.
@CallenMagnuson
@CallenMagnuson 6 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your Uromastyx! I love seeing them around more and more. I've found males can be more outgoing and will tend to be more willing to hang out with you as well as be a bit more feisty when they are young. He should get used to you and stop biting as he gets older though! As far as diet, I mostly try to avoid spinach. Iceberg lettuce is pretty void of nutrition, but many of the darker lettuces will have enough nutrition to get away with feeding. I tend to use spring mix and toss it with some calcium and vitamin powder once or twice a week. Lentils are also a big deal. I always keep a small dish filled with dried lentils. I mix this with a basic bird seed. I do try to avoid sunflower seeds still in the shell though. The tough shells make me nervous even though they should be able to handle them. That said, I find my uromastyx will pick out all the lentils and eat them before touching any of the birdseed mix.
@Abstormal
@Abstormal 6 жыл бұрын
I find most lists say Endives and Frisee are supposedly the best staple diet. But I just can't find those, even tried at a farm market. They are in some of the mixes though. I use millet as part of the bedding, and seen him eat them too, and have a bowl of bird food (Canaries, mostly small little seeds or things and a bit of sunflowers without shells) with just a tiny bit of reptile food in the mix (saw it recommended). And I use both calcium and vitamins =) I haven't given him lentils though. And no experience with them. Any specific kind? I don't know his actual gender though, but prefer to say he than he/she or it =P
@CallenMagnuson
@CallenMagnuson 6 жыл бұрын
How brightly colored is your Uromastyx? Males are more vivid than females in most species. As far as lentils go, I've found they like them dry and crunchy the most. You may find your Uro is most attracted to a certain color lentil. I'd recommend buying all of them, mixing them together, and seeing what your uro decides to eat!

@TheCharleseye
@TheCharleseye 6 жыл бұрын
Hot Cosby Considering most people are terrible at husbandry and want to treat anything they buy like a stray cat (put out food and water and only clean up messes if they become inconvenient), I'd say all reptiles are a bad idea for "most people." The only reason Petsmart and PetCo still sell animals is because most people are happy to ignorantly do the wrong thing with an animal (as long as it's the cheaper, easier option), have it die within a year or two and then go out and buy another one. "Most people" should have a pet rock.

Plus they also are the exception when it comes to size, growing up to 30" they need a much larger enclosure then the others. They're actually the largest of all agamid lizards.

Uromastyx have cute heads, like turtles. I find them to be friendly once they get accustomed to you, good natured and very easy to feed with relatively inexpensive food.

Food wise, easily over $100 a month, unless you are breeding Dubias. Utilities cost? Probably an extra $75-$100. My 2 beardies and my tortoise eat me out of house and home. Separately, my 12 tarantulas only cost me about $25 a month to feed.

Uros and Beardies are in the same species/family of Agamidae so they act similar. However Beardies are more domesticated so with a Uro you have to work towards their trust similar to a cat or gecko. Uro need two hot light bulbs and they cost more than Beardies' single light bulb but Uro food is cheaper and easier to deal with since they are 99.5% vegan.

Hi Clint! Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together! I have had the hardest time finding honest comparisons online between different lizards. Typically I find lots of detail on one species on a site, but then horrible scant info on others and it's almost always inconsistent between sites. It makes honest research and selecting the right reptile difficult for someone who's not already in the hobby. I'd like to ask a question comparing the Uro and Beardie if you're possibly still reading comments on this video. What is the difference in attentiveness and inquisitiveness between the Uro and Beardie? The inquisitiveness of Beardies is really a big part of what has my family interested in adding a Reptile, but the color and feeding requirements of the Uros have us really considering them. I get that Uros will prefer to get low and hide while a Beardie will want to climb, but how interactive are they in comparison?

From my own research I've found there isnt a basic "it acts like this", it varies from individual to individual. So comparing them as a species is rather difficult in my opinion. The main question is whether or not you want an observation animal or one you can handle on a regular basis?

Nice video ! Your explanation are so clear and the way you talk make the video very enjoyable ! Can't wait to see more of them ! I actually got a Uromastyx a year ago, and the person at the pet shop told me he was around 3yrs old. When she took it, he looked fine and same when I putted him in his ''house'', but since then I can't grab him cause every time I drop his vegies he run to hide himself. I tried to make him use to it, but doesnt seem like working. Everytime i grab him he panic and flick his tail in every direction, never calming down. I can see in his eyes how much he panic :/

The Mali Uro was the very first lizard I ever loved lol. When I was in middle school I think (cuz gosh I'm old and it was a lifetime ago) instead of taking the bus, I'd walk home just so I could stop at this pet shop and play with the animals! They had a Mali Uromastyx and it was the coolest thing in the world to me! Super docile, not very colorful, but I remember the temp of its belly was super hot and as a lil kid I always thought it was their body temp, now I know it's because he basked on a heat rock in his enclosure. I still don't have one because of availability and when I do find them, they're way more expensive than I'm prepared to dish out, so that's one for the save jar! lol

Ehhh I'd have to disagree with the final conclusion. Yes getting all the feeders can be a pain...but it's much cooler watching a lizard eat feeders vs eating a salad lol. Both awesome lizards though. We have a Beardie and I want a uromastyx. But our next lizard will be a Blue Tongue Skink. We are headed to Repticon Knoxville today!

Uromastyx will eat dandelions, and can forage in the yard ....that saves money and also is a good way to keep the Uromastyx healthy by getting yard time daily. Good excellent temperament Need to watch them 100% or put on leash

I used to have a bearded dragon before I moved abroad. He had a hide on the cool end of the enclosure which he only used as his bedroom. As soon as the lights came on in the morning he would leave the hide, often hanging out on a piece of wood in his basking spot. Sometimes he would go and rest on top of the hide during the day to cool down, but he only went inside during night. You say that you never see them inside their hide, maybe mine just had a special personality or my setup was the cause. His final terrarium was quite large (170x60x70 cm) so maybe he didn't feel secure hanging out in the open during night. Never thought about it much as he generally seemed quite happy and healthy in general.
