Bring back memories grew up in Gary back in 1972 worked in a auto machine shop "a high school work program" spent many Sundays at US30. There was this one team called Goings & Goings we did work on thier motor in our shop; they were fast. Sad to see the end of this video I can never forget WLS & Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. Thanks for the video, i need to show this to my son, this week I turned 66 and was telling my son about the old days, my 1967GTX and US30 drag strip.

Thanks for a blast from the past. I only went there a few times as a kid but have some fond memories of the commercials too back in the 60's and 70's. I drove down US30 last summer a few times and totally forgot that it was just east a couple of miles from RT. 65. Here's to the good old days, I wish I could go back just for a day.

Tom, Great memories. I lived in Posen IL for many years and we made many treks to US 30 drag strip. When I was in the Marine Corps stationed at El Toro Santa Ana CA, the Orange County Drag Strip was close to the base and I went too.

Back in the early 1960s we ran everything from a '59 Pontiac Catalina, a '59 Corvette and some sports cars at the US 30 drag strip. It was rough and ready back then, but the enthusiasm was terrific.

I grew up going to this dragstrip. Jeff Galka with the 1970 candy red Chevelle called Primo introduced me to drag racing when I was 11 years old by letting me tag along nearly every Sunday, Sunday, Sunday..., and I've been hooked ever since. If anyone knows what became of Jeff, I'd sure love to say hello.

This is where "the Judge" raced too. We were such a honest group too- we could leave our spot with fuel/tires and tools and it never got messed with.

There is a special place in my heart for US30 Dragstrip. "Sunday Funday, at beautiful US30 Dragstrip, be there!" remember those radio commercials! I still have many pictures from the mid 60's. No Big Thing, The Little Red Wagon, Shake Rattle and Run - Tommy Ivo's 4-engine Buick Dragster! The Green Monster jet car. Remember the jet car that blew down the shack behind the start line? That was so cool! I'd like to find out how to post pictures on here, I have a bunch.

I loved US 30 Drag strip. My first visit was to see WAGON MASTER... a 4-engine monster. Many visits followed, If the place was still in business today, nobody would go. Kids today just TEXT and play video games. They don't experience real life or challenges involving anything like building your car.

1:03 to 1:11, I was there that day. The LRW and the HUG had a wheelstand competition, and the LRW won because he ran the whole quarter mile as a wheelie and his tailgate wiped out the timing lights at the big end. Racing was delayed while they repaired the lights. I was maybe 8 years old.

I knew George Brugos,my sister-in-law dated him at that time.I graduated in '65 and was in the racing scene at that time with the Hustlers Car Club of Gary Indiana.I'm pretty sure the original No Big Thing had a well modified 327 engine in that little Vespa. He used to pull wheelies on S.Broadway in front of McDonalds. We would assemble in the parking lot accross the road facing McDonalds and haggle for some races. One of my best friends raced a car named Bisquick,a '66 Marina Blue Biscayne with modified big cammed 427.We were at US 30 every weekend in those days.George sold the car to Reed years later, but it was plenty fast for a street car at that time.Last time I was at US 30 was in '71 when I took my '64 GTO with a transplanted RA IV engine for some confidential time only runs.Beat a lot of BBC's with that car on the street. Those were the good old days fo sho.

I was there ONE weekend w/ my '57. Best was a 10:98 @ 119. Ended up pushing an M-16 after 2 years of getting my car ready for that great track. It would be sheer happiness if 30 re-opened. My favorite cars were No Big Thing, Blue Bandit, Lil' Screamer, and Jail Bait ( a kickin' 57 BelAir )

I remember "No Big Thing" I think a Fiat with a 427 Chevrolet in the front. It would wheelie all four gears. Good times. I raced a Camaro there in bracket racing.

Original builder of No Big Thing was George Brugos in 1966.I think he sold it to Reed in the 70's and it got a BBC instead of the original modified 327 George had in it.

Phil Burkhart in "Bad Blood", t-bucket would line up against a '55 Chevy called either "Hard Times" or "Public Enemy", and the top of the stands on the south side of the track the money would fly. Guys betting on lanes, unbelievable. 1984, AHRA had an event there. I saw a guy in a Top Fuel dragster called "Triana" lose it on the top end, went into a barrel roll, died 2 days later of internal injuries. I won Bracket 4, 12.00-12.99 two weeks in a row, best weekends of my life.

I like how you did the Google map on that, it is awesome. I just posted a video on KZbin from 2014. When we were there it seemed sad. I still don't know why they stoped. I know Joliet must have been there replacement. But not sure. I tried to dig up some info but I did not find why they closed.
