This past summer I spent two weeks exploring US 50 from Kansas to California. I received several requests to go the other direction, and while I'm not able to go all the way to Maryland I did check out the section through Missouri. This first part through Western Missouri goes from Kansas City to Jefferson City. There are a lot of really interesting small towns and some fascinating history here!

One of the best videos yet. I don't know much about Missouri, but this looks like beautiful country! It's nice to see that most of the towns have either grown or are at least holding their population steady. I really like Sedalia. Thanks for another great trip. Looking forward to the next one.

Lee's Summit has been one of my favorite towns in Missouri since I first got stationed at Whiteman AFB in 1992. Warrensburg (Johnson County) is the home of Old Drum, or as more widely known, Man's Best Friend. The modern push mower was also invented in Warrensburg.

I've always liked Missouri. Fun fact: Missouri is #3 on the list of Cival War battles. Arkansas is 7th, Oklahoma is 12th, Kansas is 18th. Thank you for including a little history of the towns, I like doing further research on some of them. I want to thank you for the time and effort you put in to bring us great videos all year. I appreciate them and look forward to the road trips each week. Praying GOD'S richest blessings for you. Have a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year! 🌟

FYI, 50 highway was expanded to four lanes from KC to accommodate all the traffic heading down to the Lake of the Ozarks, usually for the weekend but also for vacation. Go to Tipton and turn south! You'll get there. The history of the lake and the growth of all the small towns down there is interesting too.

How fun. I grew up in Centertown, went to high school in Jefferson City, college in Warrensburg, and my first newspaper job was in California, so I spent the first third of my life on Highway 50. So glad you took the old route. ❤️😊

We just did a back and forth on US 50 between KC and Defiance, back in October. It was nice reestablishing our respective relationship with traveling the route in our home state. I was surprised with how much is four lane divided hwy to Sedalia.

Unfortunately, I am old enough to remember when 50 went through most of those small towns instead of around... Kinda sad to see what happened to some (at least some of the businesses) after the bypass went in. Happened on other old highways as well.

I left Sedalia in the 1980's to join the military. I am surprised Warrensburg is as big as Sedalia. Knob Noster is just as ugly as I remembered it, but has a nice state park. Near Otterville is where Jessie James robbed a train. Glad that Tipton still has the 8 ball. I lived temporarily in Centertown as a child, looks the same almost. Lived in Elston too, it was never on highway 50, but much of old Elston is gone. St Martins used to be what we called a wide spot in the road, totally different now. From St Martins the next spot would have been Apache Flats, not sure why it was called that but it had the House of Bargins. Then next was Jefferson City where I was born. Things have changed in the last 40 years.

The last few times I’ve driven across Missouri on Highway 50, I traveled the four lane part as much as possible. It’s definitely faster, but you miss a lot by skipping the towns the road was built to connect. Your video reminded me of the trips I took through there in the early 1980s.

Wonderful video! Living in Central Missouri and enjoying a good day trip, I've gone from the Kansas border to the Illinois border on U.S. 50 a couple of times, and I've spent a good amount of time at the Amish and Mennonite stores in the area around Tipton and Centertown. Thank you for showing us through each of these little towns and unincorporated communities, and I can hardly wait until you do 50 east of Jefferson City, as one of the towns just off 50 (Owensville) is where I lived when I was a kid.

AS A VERY YOUNG LAD OUR FAMILIES LONG DISTANCE TRIP WERE FROM OUR FARM TO JEFFERSONTOWN KENTUCKY, TO VISIT MY DADS PARENTS! THIS WAS A 560 MILE TRIP TAKEN AT CHRISTMAS TIME, EVERY 3/4 YEARS! WE WOULD LEAVE HOME AND TAKE MARTIN CITY ROAD,/ KS HIWAY 150/135 th TO HIGHWAY 50 AT LONE JACK MO TO ST LOUIS, US50 ACROSS ILLINOIS AND INDIANA TO VINCENNES INDIANA, THEN PICK US 150 TO LOUISVILLE KY. IN THOSE DAYS THERE WAS ALWAYS A LOT OF TRAFFIC IN ST LOUIS AND MUCH STOP AND GO! IN THESE DAYS THE INTERSTATES WERE NOT EVEN A DREAM THEN! ONE TRIP, FOR A CHANGE OF PACE, DAD TOOK HIGHWAY US 40 KANSAS CITY TO ST LOUIS. IT WAS A BETTER ROAD, BUT MORE TRAFFIC, AND, UNFORTUNATELY WE STILL HAD TO NAVIGATE THROUGH ST LOUIS, ALSO! IT WAS NICE SEEING THE PORTIONS OF OLD US 50 AS I REMEMBER THEM!! THE OLD ROUTE FROM OLATHE TO LONE JACK WAS A POPULAR ROUTING TO THOSE WANTING TO GO EAST OF KANSAS CITY WITHOUT GOING THROUGH DOWNTOWN KC! WITH THE BUILDING OF I-435 AND I-470 THIS SHORT CUT EAST WAS MADE OBSOLETE AND NEARLY FORGOTTEN TODAY!!

It's really funny sometimes how some of these towns got their names, whether they be from misspelling (Lee's Summit) or just a single tree like Lone Jack and Elm. It's like the settlers were trying to come up with a name and somebody was like "well, there's an Elm tree over there, guess we could call it Elm" 🤣

I lived 3 years in Lee's Summit. My friend lived just off US 50 near Lone Jack and told me that when she moved there, her neighbor warned her not to drive down the nearby county road on Friday nights so as to avoid the Ku Klux Klan meetings.

Awesome video!!! Whenever I travel to Fort Leonard Wood, MO, for whatever reasons, I usually travel US HWY 50 from the KCKS/MO area to Sedalia, MO, then acquire US HWY 65 south. Took a few trips on US HWY 50 east myself during this past summer when going to The Lake of the Ozarks - beautiful route and small towns. Anyway, just about a mile or so outside Otterville, MO, there is a nice little historical monument dedicated to a train robbery by the James Gang. Whiteman Air Force Base was named in honor of 2LT George Whiteman who is considered to be the 1st American pilot SHOT DOWN and killed during WWII by enemy action. He was killed during the Pearl Harbor attack.

Went through the towns too fast for me. I enjoy it when you get out and explore the towns. I know you didn't have the time. Sure seemed like you were in a hurry. The train behind you in Sedalia was interesting but you didn't check it out. I'm surprised that there is so much of old Highway 50 left to travel on because there's not much of the old route 66 anymore. Thank you. God bless.
