I have a feeling this is not the end of the base. Knowing the Germans, they wouldn't let this base sit like this since 2018 without doing something with it. Supposedly the American government will be allocating at least $500 million to renovate Baumholder. Hopefully Straussburg and Neubruckie will get some much needed renovations also.

You've been there after the army base was left oder did you just cry when seeing these pictures of the video? If so, I would not recommend to go there. The pictures on the video look kind of sad, but because of the sun it's still friendly. I've been there a couple years ago when the weather was cloudy and it's real, real scary. Used to play there, when I was a child.

Hi Ronald. My brother and I lived there from 60 to 64. Our building is at the 4:45 mark. Far corner first floor. My dad was head of the motor pool and worked at the nco club occasionally. I think my brother played on your baseball team. He had a group picture he'd like to share. Thanks so much for your posts. We remember Mr. Rolo 😊 and Saturday matinee.

OMG... so much memories come with these pictures. I used to live in Algenroth as a child and when we went to Steinkaulenberg on the accomodation road we often met US kids and became friends. That's where I learned to speak English, that's where I found my interes and admiration for the United States. Too sad that the US Army left that place, although I don't live there anymore since 1980. I visited it a couple years ago, but it's a ghost town now. A ghost town with an accomomdation road to the gem fields they make a circus for the tourists, just to keep their financial situation afloat. Miss those times.. really..

I lived here from January 1993 to May 1995 (we lived in an apartment above Jackboy in Baumholder from August 1992 to January 1993). It's crazy to see the apartment building, 9047, that I lived in nearly 30 years later. And yes, I remember the Christmas Market and going to Idar-Oberstein Elementary School with Mrs. Allen (Grade 1), Ms. Edwards (Grade 2) and Ms. Klaia (Grade 3) as my teachers. And we can't forget about having only one channel until we finally got cable on post. Sky One and Cartoon Network were the best things ever for a young kid living in Germany back in the early to mid 90s.

I lived in the Strassburg BOQ and just off the kaserne from June, 1979 (when I arrived in Germany) to June, 1980 - when I transferred to Kaiserslautern. For families and married persons, the place would be suitable - there was enough there to meet needs. For single soldiers (all ranks) having to spend one year or more - there are better places in that there are more options elsewhere. It would have been a long, slow, and difficult three years for me if I had remained there for three years. The negative of living in a small military community is it was like living in a fish bowl. You can go for an innocent walk on a street on the kaserne and the next day everyone in your unit knows what you did and when. I remember the times and the people there very well - like everything happened yesterday.

Bergof, thats it! And I misspoke, Tony the Barber owned the club downtown, around the corner from The Cherry. His wife was the manager, they had an [informal, friends-only] 'Tequila Club' which was basically you bought a bottle of El Torero tequila to get in, and you kept the plastic sombrero cap that came with it, and if you spotted another member of the club without their sombrero they had to buy rounds. For the record, she was (tall and gorgeous) the worlds worst for keeping her sombrero and easy to bust for free drinks ;)

The 2/81st Airborne was there then, and they had SP 109's, which were tracked 155mm self-propelled artillery pieces. There is a lot of weird things to see around there if you have the time and the patience to find them. I would suggest that you don't go looking. Try looking at it from Google Earth, you'll find buildings and sites that are computer generated images, without any reason for Google to do this. I am not trolling. My father was stationed there in 78-81. I really liked this place out of all the places I have been. I wish I could go back and see the old place again. The only place I didn't see on the video is the movie theater.

I believe the building is still there but when I was there it wasn't open. The small gym with the basketball court is what I remember and the movie rental spot in the building we would watch the super bowl and celebrate new years.
