Yeah, during the cold war, the Soviets were developing a satellite killing missile. They were mounting it on one of their space rockets to get it out of the atmosphere. The US just made a bigger than usual missile, and stuck it on an F-15. You see, the maximum flight altitude for an F-15 is sixty-five thousand feet. Past that, the wings can't produce enough lift to sustain flight. But the F-15 doesn't need wings. In a parabolic arch, using momentum once its engines run out of atmosphere to beat into submission, it has reached ninty-three thousand feet. That's kissing vacuum. Ayup, Soviets boosted it to space on a rocket, because that's how you get stuff to space. The US just used an F-15 to taxi it to space, because the frigging things can just porpoise leap that high.
@jonadabtheunsightly4 ай бұрын
If it were actually a rocket like the Emphatic Electriction wants to pretend, then it could straight up fly into space and keep going, as long as its fuel supply holds out. (This is the defining difference between a jet and a rocket: a jet uses the atmosphere to create thrust, and so it can't work without atmosphere. A rocket uses conservation of momentum and does not need atmosphere to work; in fact, a rocket works *better* outside the atmosphere, because there's no drag up there. The reason jet engines are frequently preferred inside the atmosphere, is because they're more fuel-efficient than rockets. Which is a low bar; rockets are not very fuel efficient.)

Air Force Veteran here ..... Contrary to incorrect popular belief, the "fog" formation around the aircraft is NOT an indication that it is breaking the sound-barrier. That is simply a condensation cloud that forms in a humid environment. It is caused by the adiabatic cooling of air. As air flows over the wing, it speeds up and its pressure decreases. This reduction in pressure leads to a drop in temperature, sometimes reaching the dew point, causing water vapor to condense into tiny droplets, forming fog. BTW ..... Yes, that is a real image/video of an F-15 flying with only one wing.

When I was a kid I'd get woken up by them flying over my house in the mornings on the weekends, I lived in an area used for low altitude jet training by British and American air force jets, it was super cool but could also get a little annoying at times too! Eventually they decided where I lived was a little too built up so they stopped flying over my house but the same base called RAF Valley is still used today for low altitude training in the local mountains, they now use a circuit called the Mach Loop (named after the nearby town of Machynlleth) and it's a pretty amazing place to go and watch the jets, the hillsides are really steep in the valley they use and you can walk to the top and watch the jets fly past below you so you're actually looking down at jets flying past you, it feels so surreal! It's not just jets either, they train their with all aircraft including helicopters, Hercules etc. Pilots from allied air forces all over the world come here to train, If you search for ' Mach Loop' in KZbin there's loads of videos posted and one of the best channels for it is called 'Elwyn R', some of the images he takes are simply incredible!

Just to be clear, the 104-0 record does come with a slight qualifier. No, it is not about the record being a few decades old. No, it is not about the simulations against F-22s. No, it is that the record is only regarding actual combat it was in. Plenty of F-15s have been lost over its decades of service due to critical equipment failures and training accidents, all of which resulted in crashes. The record means that no enemy in any armed conflict it has fought in has ever shot it down, whether it be an enemy plane or anti-air battery. Only one other plane has a combat record that comes anywhere close to the F-15's, and that other plane is the F-16 (IIRC, its record is 86-0).

Where you should go on a road trip very much depends on where you're starting. The country is *large* and you cannot possibly see all of it in a single road trip. With that said, here are a few things that would be very much worth seeing in the Midwest (aka the Great Lakes region; a couple of these are in, or on the border with, Canada): * Niagara Falls is *not* over-rated. See it from Queen Victoria Park, and also from the base of Goat Island on the New York side ("Cave of Winds" tour), and also take the boat trip. * The big cheese place in Millersburg, Ohio. This also gives you a chance to drive through Holmes County (colloquially known as "Amish country"), which is interesting. * Cedar Point. If you have any interest _at all_ in roller coasters, this is a must. (Otherwise, maybe not. There are a lot of other things to do in the park, but they don't stand out compared to other amusement parks elsewhere. It's the roller coasters that make the Point special.) * Going out onto any of the lakes on a boat can be interesting, but I particularly recommend the Chi-Cheemaun ferry between South Baymouth and Tobermory. Really cool experience. * The Soo Locks at Sault Ste. Marie are really cool to see in operation, but only if you are in the area; don't drive hundreds of miles out of your way for it, unless driving across the Upper Peninsula sounds fun on its own. (Which, I suppose it might, for some.) * Best big cities to visit in the region are Chicago, Toronto, Milwaukee, Cinci, and maybe St. Louis. However, Cinci and St. Louis might be better worked into a Midlands trip (along with things like Mammoth Cave and Nashville) or a Mississippi River trip. * Most of the big cities in the region have museums of various types. Some of them are rather good. For example, COSI is a very hands-on science and technology museum in Columbus, and is an amazingly good family activity. If you happen to be near Columbus, this is very much worth seeing, even if you don't have any children with you. If you *do* have children with you, then it's worth driving a significant distance out of your way for this one. Other cities have other museums. Whichever cities you're going to be closest to, check what they've got. There's probably something cool. * If you like sports, and can come in the fall, you might want to catch a Big 10 football game. The biggest would be the OSU vs Michigan game, if you can get tickets for it (they always sell out), but any Big 10 football game is going to be very high-energy with an excited crowd and will be fun if you like sports. There are other spectator sports in the region as well, but college football is the most popular; and second place is probably either pro football, which is the same time of year, or high school football, also at the same time of year. * Speaking of which, attending a high-school football game might be an interesting cross-cultural experience if you're from Britain (or anywhere in Europe really). This might be worth doing even if you don't care that much about the sport itself, just for the "this is so different from school activities where I'm from" factor. * If you're interested in nature stuff, there are a number of state and national parks in the region. These are particularly worthwhile in the fall when the leaves are turning. Hocking Hills for example is a good choice. Mohican happens to be in an area where there are also a lot of canoe liveries, if that appeals to you. * If you happen to come in October, consider looking for fall and Halloween-themed activities. The entire region is sprinkled liberally with orchards and farms and whatnot that offer tours and hayrides and apple cider donuts and so on and so forth; and also there are lots of "haunted house" attractions and such. Cedar Point has "Halloweekends", so if you've ever wanted to see an entire amusement park decorated for Halloween, there's your chance. * If you're here during deer season, going out with a hunting with a couple of locals (even if you don't get a hunting license or do any actual hunting yourselves) could be an interesting cross-cultural experience. Deer season dates vary from state to state, but are generally in the fall. There are other types of hunting, but deer season is by far the most culturally significant. As a side effect, this would also expose you to American gun culture. * If you come in the winter, look for an opportunity to experience ice fishing. It's fairly popular in the northern Midwest. * Also, if you come in winter, look for an opportunity to get into a snowball fight. Because it's fun, and you can do it basically anywhere, as long as there's snow. * If you come in the hot part of the summer, consider going to an American "water park" at some point. They're scattered all around the country, so you'll be able to find one within reasonable driving distance of wherever you happen to be. And it's a lot of fun. (Although, if you go to Cedar Point, this may be redundant; there's a fairly substantial water park located at Cedar Point, though I think it costs extra.)

I'm pretty sure the F15 breaking the sound barrier as it takes off is the same principle as the cloud lines that airliners can "produce". Although in the F15s case the trail doesn't stay for very long. Yes the same effect is acheived whilst breaking through or just about maintaining the speed of sound, but I think it's just a combination of rapid accelaration and not moving through space in a linear fashion that causes that vapour effect in this circumstance (I'm not a physicist though, that's probably largely incorrect).

It’s true about the wing. It was a pilot of the Israeli Air Force. His name was Ziv Nedivi. His real danger was from the fuel it was leaking, from either fire or fuel exhaustion. That same plane went to a maintenance facility, had the wing replaced, was in the air again and then went on to down another Syrian MiG -23 after the wing incident. Y’all of the younger generation don’t know what you missed on TV back years ago. We had the greatest channel ever on television! It was simply called “the Wings channel”. It covered mostly military aircraft, but either way aircraft videos/stories all day, everyday! It later merged into “the Military Wings channel”, which covered all things military, including aviation. Then it morphed into “the Military channel” and has cut down on the aircraft side of things unfortunately! I was fortunate growing up as my uncle was a Naval flight instructor at Top Gun. I know it sounds cliche and bogus, but it’s true. He knew I wanted to be a pilot, before diabetes robbed me of that dream. He would get documentation on all kinds of military aircraft and send them to me. I’d imagine I wasn’t supposed to have many of them. I did a book report on the SR-71 in the 5th grade (originally called the RS-71, but Johnson blew the name in an interview and instead of making the president look like a fool they just changed the name). The teacher thought I’d made most of them t up, read some about it and then gave me an F. He said that I just made up the facts and didn’t have the documents I used for a source. Imagine his surprise when I brought in said documents and they matched what I had said and proved the books he found were wrong. Being older now, I now realize that those books just quoted the publicly available data on the aircraft, not the real data. I had, unbeknownst to me, kinda stated facts about an aircraft that was little known, and facts that they STILL do not publish! Let’s just say that the stated top speed is quite a bit slower. The stated flight ceiling is substantially lower than what it can actually do. I now keep said facts to myself, along with my uncles name. I do enjoy knowing the “real” numbers when I see things about it on TV or KZbin, lol.

A jet with rocket like ability but a rocket vs. jet is defined by the type of engine. A jet takes in air to produce thrust a rocket does not, though a hybrid design would be cool and a great advantage to spaceflight though it adds complications. If a rocket used air while still in the air instead of onboard oxygen one could reduce the weight of fuel and tanks needed by quite a bit, a ram jet pod to feed the engines or even a powerful jet booster or lift can save cost. Smaller rockets for Low Earth Orbit already use planes as launch platforms that are a quarter of the cost of traditional rocket all the way craft for smaller payloads like the forerunners to Elon's Starlink network sent up by telecoms and others for comm, gps and military use. Even Amazon had a network for a while.

One thing the narrator gets wrong is about the missing wing scenario - McDonnell Douglas didn't believe the Israel Air Force when they told them about this incident but they sent a team of engineers to investigate what happened & how the plane was able to maintain flight (& land). They determined that the flat under side of the aircraft in addition to the large rear ailerons created more than enough "lift" to maintain controlled flight. Had nothing to do with thrust, though the pilot needed increased speed to maintain control & had to land well above normal landing speed. F-15 WAS the first jet to accelerate going vertical though. However, an F-22 will walk away from it in a vertical race. Waiting to see how the new F-15EX will stack up - it is going to be lighter, more powerful, more maneuverable & faster than any previous F-15. Outstanding jet.
