I used to live in an HOA and I will never live in one again. I wanted to paint my house and I did the correct forms and sent them in and they denied it. About a month later one of my neighbors across the street painted his house, bright orange, with yellow trim and purple ones around all the windows. I called the HOA and complained and asked why he could paint his house that color but I couldn’t paint mine, a forest green trim with a off-white stucco paint. They said that he never filled out the paperwork but now that it was painted, there was nothing they could do. The very next weekend I painted my house, the colors that I wanted to paint it.

My father and my Stepmother once bought a piece of property in Illinois, and that tract of land was an HOA that was pretty much defunct, after I got out of the Military, I lived with my dad and stepmom for a short time while I got my feet back under me, and I had a hot rod, that there was not enough room in the garage for it to be parked there, and this stupid HOA, decided that they did not like the looks of my hot rod out front, and sent my dad a letter informing him of a fine they were going to levy against him, when he told me about it, I asked him. WHY do you put up with this crap from these people? he just said that it is an HOA and there was nothing that he could do about it, I told my dad, not to worry, I will take care of it, that night at 3 A.M. I fired up my hot rod, which was VERY LOUD, and cruised through the neighborhood very slowly revving the engine and waking EVERYONE up, adults, retirees, children and babies, and just to make CERTAIN that everyone was awake, I rolled through a couple more times until the lights were on in EVERY HOUSE. then went back to my dads house, as we looked out the back windows, we saw as slowly everyone turned their lights out and went back to bed, and I fired up the hot rod and did it again, they were so pissed, that the next day when the "PRESIDENT" of the HOA showed up and my dads door, he did not notice me working on my hot rod with my pistol on my hip, he yelled and dad for a minute, and my dad told him to come talk to me, as he was striding across the lawn and screaming at me, I REALLY enjoyed seeing his attitude change drastically when I turned around and he finally saw the pistol on my hip, I asked him what the problem was, and he somewhat calmly told me that stunt that I did the night before, would not be tolerated anymore, I then got right in his face and told him that threatening me is the WRONG tact to take, and if he did not like the events of 3 A.M. he was really going to hate tonight, so at 1 A.M. I fired up the hot rod, and did it again, then at 2 A.M. then at 3 A.M. all the way till 7 A.M on the hour every hour, he somehow got an emergency hearing and 2 days later I was in court explaining to a judge why I was acting as I was, at the end of the hearing, the judge told me that from now on, I will NOT be allowed to drive my hot rod through the neighborhood after the sun goes down, so I went home and called up 5 of my friends who also have very loud hot rods and told them I would pay for their gas if they would drive slowly through the neighborhood 3 times during the night, which they did, IT WAS NOT ME so I could not get in trouble for it, is what I thought, but there I was back in court to answer for the 5 guys that was doing the exact same thing as I did in the first place, I would not tell the judge their names even when he threatened to throw me in jail, but I promised that they would not do it again, so that night I jumped on my Harley at midnight and went for a very loud ride through the neighborhood every hour on the hour and back in front of the judge I was again, he then instructed me that I was not to drive ANY loud vehicles through the neighborhood after dark, BUT my younger brother who has a different love of cars then me, he is into hearses, had an electrically driven air raid siren that he was planning on mounting in one of his hearses, I asked him if I could borrow it, and mounted it to a board on top of dads mini van, and at midnight went for a drive through the neighborhood, the vehicle is very quiet, but the siren was not, and back on front of the judge I was again, and this time he FINALLY asked me WHY I was doing what I was doing, and I laid it out for him, that there was effectively 7 houses out of the original 42 that was trying to enforce HOA rules when the HOA went bankrupt more than a decade earlier, and they were a bunch of bitches that wanted control over other peoples lives, telling them what they could and could not do with the property that they were paying for WITHOUT any assistance from the HOA, what color they could paint their house, ECT. by then, the entire neighborhood was exhausted, because I was not letting anyone sleep, and he asked me what it would take for me to stop figuring out ways to make lots of noise and keeping the neighborhood awake all night, so I told him, the bankrupt HOA needs to be forgotten about, and these 7 houses needs to pay attention to their own property and not worry about everyone else's, because I know a few guys with raised 4 wheel drives that MIGHT want to come do some unplanned yard work soon, the judge told me not to do that because that would be physical damage and he would hold me accountable, I told him that I do not have a 4 wheel drive and I would not be doing anything, so he told us to go home and figure it out without involving him again, my dad got a letter in the mail the next day inviting him to an HOA meeting at the park on Saturday, when we showed up, ALL the property owners in the neighborhood was there, and this "PRESIDENT" started talking, and almost all of the residents did not have any clue about the defunct HOA in the first place, none of them had paid any dues, EVER, and suddenly they went from being pissed off at me, to being pissed off at this moron trying to put down rules like he was Joseph Stalin, as he was realizing that he was NOT going to hold the HOA together, about a dozen of my friends drove by in their jacked up 4X4's and drove through the entire neighborhood and looked around, those 7 Karen's finally got the hint, that I would keep raising the stakes till they gave up their dreams of neighborhood domination, so at the end of the meeting they all voted to disband the HOA and let it rest on the ash heap of history. that is how I beat my dads HOA a long time ago.

I lived in an HOA where the trees had to be trimmed 6 ft above the sidewalk but could not be more than 8 ft tall so all the trees looked weird as hell. I was traveling for work and would get fined for this rule all the time. Also you had to have a certain number of plants for from a very specific list and if one died you had to replace it within 2 days. Well this was in the desert and some of the plants they wanted to see were not suited to the desert, so I would get HOA fines on that too. It made me so mad that I will never live in one again. I recently bought a farm in the country so I never have to deal with this crap again.

I live in the UK, and we don't have HOA's, thank goodness! I saw another YT video which had an HOA representative complaining over the camera doorbell to the homeowner, that they must have changed the lock on the front door , because his master key would not open the door, so that he could have a look around inside while they were out!! What?!! I do not really understand why HOA's even exist over there!! Why would anyone put up with that?!!

I've never lived in a HOA and swore I never would. When we were renting in CA stories would hit the local newspapers about some stupid crap the HOA's were pulling. One that I remember was about them fining a man daily for putting a Santa w/reindeer on his roof for Christmas. I swore then that hell would freeze over before I would live in a HOA. If I'm shelling out that kind of money to own a house I'll be damned if anyone is going to tell me what I'm going to do with/on it! And you don't have to live in the country to avoid them. You just have to be diligent about the paperwork, something GI's are all too familiar with.

you asked I got curious this is what I found In most states (43 out of 50), the monthly HOA fee ranges from $300 to $400. The data collected also identified disparities and geographic trends in HOAs. For example, the study found that in Missouri, HOA residents pay an average fee of $469, while in Wisconsin, a homeowner pays an average of only $277

I know there is an HOA in Kansas City that charges over 1000 dollars a month in dues. They are under investigation because there is truly not a lot to spend that kind of money on. They have a couple of older building that have been turned into multi-million dollar flats. They are suppose to keep lighting in the common areas lit but like to shut off the lights on certain flat owners.

My HOA is an almost $350 a month. It is a lot but I live in 24hr guard gated community (which means nothing as crime still gets in), we have a R2D2 looking robot that also patrols the neighborhood with live feed to police dept. (we still have golf cart security rolling around eating and healthy security guard riding laps in the bike around feeding stray cats), we have a pool/jacuzzi, gym, computer center, club house, multiple dog stations and designated poop areas, they cover our water, landscaping, roofs, and host fun contests for the residents (like holiday decorating for prizes, Easter egg hunt, trick or treating… etc). We have community mixers with a DJ and food at the clubhouse. And donuts and coffee at town hall meetings (which are attended by community cops). There’s also an HOA rep here at the office on site 6 days a week during regular business hours. It all adds up that I’m okay paying that much for amenities. Security knows every resident by name and I live alone so I like that they check on me. Security or my neighbors call or text me when they see my garage open and no car. Sometimes I drive to my mailbox and bring my car because of packages at the cluster box. 😂

high propery value is good if you flip houses, buy low, raise property value and sell high, if you buy a home for long term to live in, high property value is the last thing you want, as all it does it increase the taxes or as i call it, monthly subscription to owning a house... so keep property value low and pay less every month, when you want to start selling, rise it up, sell it, and then everyone can crash it again afterwards

Great reaction to an awesome story about an awesome American! Thanks to Nic for his always awesome educational videos and to you guys for a great reaction to it. And we all know that Col. Barfoot wanted this to be handled calmly. Otherwise, he would have gone down to the local American Legion Post and the VFW and any local military bars with his medal of honor on display and there would have been a overly large well armed and motivated military force ready to reduce some Karen's McMansions to rubble. Which would have all happened "accidentally" from an "Act of God". 😀

Interestingly, there was a squabble over flags in a market here. One of the stall owners was selling flags and this was seen as being untidy (and to be fair he was messy with them). He was served a notice that if he continued to sell them he would lose his pitch (which the authorities could have done). Word got round very quickly. Next day as demanded he had zero flags on his pitch, but…..every other pitch was covered in them. It didn’t take an appeal in the media, the market authorities did an immediate turn around, and just asked him to run a tidier pitch - which he did. A lot of British law enshrines the concept of ‘reasonableness’ so the Karens of the world have far less chance to annoy.

Our HOA is actually pretty good, and it's about $350 a year. Also, everyone likes to complain about HOAs but doesn't like to acknowledge (or doesn't know) that the terms are in the deed to your house. You have to read and agree to them when you buy it. Don't like the terms? Dont buy the house. Im not saying HOAs cant go insane, because they do, but if a rule says that you cant have a 30ft flagpole, you cant install one and complain later when they tell you to take it down.

A home owners association? Thank God we don't have those in The Netherlands. I've payed € 350.000 for my house. NO ONE is going to say what I must do with my house! If I want to make it pink, it's MY choice. I payed for it with my hard earned money. Out of courtesy I won't. (To be honest, I don't like pink houses. 😂 ) And immediatly using a law firm? Why don't you talk to the man first! If these associations existed in my country, it would lead to a civil war, or more accurate, a street war. 😂 If you give an 'average' person this power, they go mad. They get a God syndrome. Thinking they are the God of the street. And I guess those persons are mostly 'stay at home' moms. They get bored and start to interfere in other people's bussiness. We have those Karens also in my country. But thank God they can only mess around in their book reading clubs.

I've never personally experienced the HOA but I have heard more than enough second and third hand stories to despise them. Worst one is I heard about someone who the HOA was demanding they "fix the pitch of their roof" for conformity sake. That's right. These [redacted] are demanding a house that has been established for years completely REMOVE THE ROOF and do it again AT THE HOMEOWNER'S EXPENSE. I'm reasonably sure the HOA got told to go pound rocks but still...

Just so you know, what the HOA did was illegal: The Freedom to Display the American Flag Act of 2005 makes it illegal for an HOA to restrict owners from displaying a U.S. flag. It was 2009 in the story, so Col Barfoot could have sued the HOA.
