Unfortunately for them they thought they were going to be able to establish bases in Iraq and Afghanistan like they have in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia to support their 5-year goal, invade Iran. It turned out to be a little harder than expected and they shifted their focus/end game. The goal got moved and some players on the field were added to the team, the same people that the U.S. was arming in 1979 against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Allies of convenience.
