Malaysia's move to attract Intel decades ago is now starting to pay off. Even though Malaysia was merely doing the backend of the semiconductor industry for decades, it allowed the ecosystem to develop and mature. They have a dedicated university in Penang (USM) that specialize in electronic, electrical engineering and computer science to meet the demand of big tech companies like Intel and Micron. The logistic hubs also specialized in moving fragile microchips and other electronic devices and good infrastructure such as roads, power and other pipelines have made it an ideal location for big tech companies to set up their operations in Malaysia.

Indeed, Malaysia seems to be 2nd to Singapore in SEA for STEM. Third place may be Vietnam/Thailand. The rest of SEA have a lot of catching up to do. Indonesia has the biggest capital but not the foundation to foster RnD to grow, hopefully it may change soon.

@FriendlyTwo ? It's during his time as PM4 under his policies that Malaysia expanded to the manufacturing economy. Just like any others previous PMs and ministers, one of their job is get as much as investments into the country as they can and establish attractive, win-win policies. If you want to play the race card, these ministers are Malays, not the Chinese. The Malays are the one with diplomacy and negotiation capabilities.
