US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said he is “hopeful” Hamas will accept Israel’s latest proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza and a hostage release deal.
He called the offer "extraordinarily generous", and a Hamas delegation is now discussing the potential deal with mediators in Cairo.
It comes after weeks of impasse, while Israel’s government faces growing pressure from its global allies and the families of hostages, to agree a deal.
The proposal reportedly involves new wording on restoring calm meant to satisfy Hamas's demand for a permanent ceasefire, having been brokered by mediators from Egypt, Qatar and the US - in a bid to secure another pause in the fighting and the release of hostages who Israel says are still being held.

From a BBC article regarding the assault on the Turkish flagged aid ship in the Gaza Freedom Flotilla which was in international waters in 2010 But the general said "accurate weapons", rather than stun grenades, should have been employed to incapacitate people on the deck of the ship before the commandos rappelled onto it. "We should have ensured sterile conditions in order to dispatch the forces in a minimum amount of time," he said. "It would have lowered the risk to our soldiers but it would not have prevented the tension... Once the decision was made to stop the ship, the conflict was inevitable." Not just that the aid workers attacked the repelling commandos unprovoked. They had stun grenades thrown on to the aid vessel and the general said they should have used more accurate weapons and made the vessel "sterile" ie void of life, an aid vessel with international citizens, not just Turkish or even just Muslim, but citizens of all faiths and races.
