@@kennedyskyler1409 Tethered Addy was thought to have gone mute because she went through trauma....being separated from her family(and, since we know, seeing her "doppelganger")and was taught to speak again in therapy, as we see in the flashbacks. Really, she was given the life the real Addy had had and taught to speak for the first time(and also why she was so reluctant to return, given she replaced "Red"Addy here.) I also have a theory that real Addy's voice sounds raspy because her voice was unused(none of the other Tethered can speak),or possibly her vocal chords were damaged when she was choked out by the Tethered Addy.

Every decision is intentional because every decision we make in any context is intentional, but that's not the same thing as everything having some additional deeper meaning, some sort of subtextual clue. You'll see videos trying to say things like "so-and-so is wearing this color because it reminds you of this other thing in the film that's the same color," when it's entirely possible that the director just thought it looked good. People often make the mistake of assuming that the director thinks like they do. Just because you can draw connections or meanings doesn't mean that THOSE meanings were what the director intended to be perceived. And if you are actually capable of being programmed by a movie, Mr. Erectile Dysfunction, that speaks pretty poorly of you.

When the family first gets to the cabin and they are sitting at the table eating lunch, the kids and the dad are eating chicken and Adelaide is eating strawberries. At first, it just looks like she is being healthy until you find out that the shadow people underground were forced to eat rabbits raw and bloody making her hate meat thus why she eats the fruit instead of the chicken. Adelaide only wears white clothing but slowly over the course of the film, her clothes get more and more bloody and red revealing her true identity as "Red" the shadow version. In the beginning with the TV showing commercial for Hands Across america, there are VHS tapes and two of them are "C.H.U.D" (80's movie about underground mutants that attack from the sewers" and "The Man With Two Brains" In the beach scene, in the beginning, Jason is wearing a "Jaws" shirt which is a monster that lurks beneath the humans waiting to attack.

"Us" has SO many Easter Eggs: • The noise that Abraham (tethered Gabe) was yelling at on the boat was the tethered white dad. (When he gets on his boat when fighting Gabe he then makes that same noise) • When Red was explaining the story, she says when Ombre (tethered Zora) and Pluto (tethered Jason) ombre was born laughing (she died laughing) and Pluto was born in fire (he died in fire), it also explains why Adelaide had been upset when the tethered kids died. • Looking back at the movie, knowing that the tethered Adelaide was the one we were following, it explains why she was willing to handcuff herself, why she looked more freaked out than her family, why she was so paranoid bc she knew the real Adelaide was always coming for her. Also. The Thriller t-shirt is not only a reference to how the music video ended, but how the film itself will end. • The government wanted the tethered to control the above ground ppl, yet the opposite happened, except for Red & Adelaide. •there are countless Horror movie references like for example the son, Jason. He wears a mask a lot & his mother was a killer

Jordan Peele further escalates horror on a psychological level, elevating “Us” to a funny, thought-provoking and mentally terrifying exhibit of a well-crafted, dread-inducing, slow burning Tethered nightmare. There are so many ways that one person can interpret the events that transpired in this movie and it proves how so much can be accomplished with the right amount of leverage and creativity. Peele manages to find the right amount of horror and comedy and blend them in seamlessly to where no aspect really outshines the other. The crazy level of suspense has an infinite buildup literally up to the last stretch of the movie with a story that keeps subverting expectations and antagonists that are bound to give me nightmares every time I have to look at myself in the mirror. The cast was really good but it was Lupita Nyong’o who delivered an Oscar worthy performance here. I was so ashamed that she didn’t, at least, get nominated for an Oscar after what she did here. My only gripe about this film is that M.Night Shymalan ending twist. With this massive success, Jordan Peele proves that Get Out was no fluke. He could very well be the new face of modern-day horror cinema if he keeps this up. And this is the same guy who’s hosting the new Twilight Zone and considering a live-action Gargoyles movie. Sign me up right now, please.

When Lupita kills one of the twins, that for me was when it was confirmed that she was one of them. When she first tells the story of the mirror room, that's the first hint that she was one of them. (Her story didn't add up. If she didn't know where the exits were... how was she suddenly able to escape her "shadow" in the mirror room once they saw each other. Surely if you were trapped/lost in that house of mirrors there's no way you could've suddenly found an exit once you conveniently needed it)

If i'm not mistaken the "We are Americans" is (if not, one of) the thesis statement of the movie. The entire film is an allegory for American social class disparity. The title of the movie is "Us" but it could also be interpreted as "U.S." as in United States. Of America, ofc. The entire movie, the Wilsons are envious of the possessions of the more well to do Tyler family. And their surnames are apparently a reference to a classical literary novel. Just like in Bong Joon Ho's Parasite, the middle class family covets what the upper class family haves and that makes them blind that there are more sinister elements at play right under them. That's just one interpretation and there are lots of deep dive analyses of this movie that are super worth the watch and they can explain it futher and clearer than me. Ps. Also, the Tethered's weapons of choice are scissors, because scissors are pairs of blades that are tethered in the middle. Just like their relationship of sharing one soul with their doubles in the above.

So for reference to non-Americans: Hands across America was a performative charity event in the 80s where a continuous group of people held hands from the Pacific to Atlantic oceans to raise awareness of homelessness and poverty in America. Actually did very little to fight poverty and was widely forgotten about afterwards. It’s a really important reference for the themes of this movie.

I think the boy was switched during or around the time of the house fire. It would explain why he had no rhythm and couldn't use the lighter but the clone was able. He was the one that knew it was clones right away and knew about how the copying worked. Red spoke to her son rather than using sounds like she did for the dad and daughter and the son was somewhat docile compared to the rest of the clones (he didn't immediately physically attack).

I love that you react to some of the BEST horror films they are making today, Ari Aster, Jordan Peele a Robert Eggers are the great horror film geniuses we have nowadays. You should definitely do The Witch, by Robert Eggers. And if you do series, or want to check out by yourself, Netflix's Haunting of Hill House is sooo good

Now that I've watched your reaction it was great to see all of the metaphors and hints (which you don't realize are hints until after watching the film) you caught! Like the snapping off beat, the rabbits out of their cages, hands across america, etc. As I said earlier I prefer Get Out but only because it felt more grounded in a way. There were moments in US where the characters reactions seemed very random and not normal (maybe there is a reason for that - people online/real life not taking serious matter seriously maybe). Plus we don't have a lot of answers in comparison to G.O, and it had a more formal ending. This movie didn't. So it's hard to feel satisfied and that we know what might happen - which is okay. US had a lot of potential and I think it slightly missed the mark but was still a really brilliant and entertaining film.

My favorite symbol is Hands Across America and the fact that the Tethered do it themselves. I saw a youtuber analyze this and they said that Hands Across America was a prime example of how the upper classes make events and fundraisers to seem like they're helping the impoverished but don't actually do anything at all. Also, she says "We're Americans" because they are saying that they are American- they were made by the US government, abandoned like the poor: forced to live in terrible circumstances because of the governments negligence. Us is amazing because the only difference between the normal family and the tethered is their circumstances. No one could tell Red was impersonating Addie because they were actually the same on the inside, but somehow different because of where they came from.

19:54 probably already a comment about this but I think after watching the movie (it was awhile ago) it was alluded to that the son was kidnapped the same way the mom was? Think he was maybe taken during his closet incident and he knows that his mom is the doppelgänger? Can’t be say with 100% certainty cuz I’ve only watched it once, but I think essentially from the start of the movie the mom and son are both “underworlders”. Think it was part of the keeping beat part in the intro car ride as well.

When the dad is trying to convince the mam to let the family go to the beach he says that the son hasn't been the same since last year when his grandmother died OR maybe its because he got switched. also he can't remember the magic trick because it was the doppelgänger who knew the trick and it led to him burning his face

Red was always on beat with music and everything. Addie was never on beat because she was tethered. Since Red (the real Addie) wasn’t tethered, she could whistle “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” and snap to the beat of music. But Addie (the original Red) was the complete opposite. It’s a lot to take in. 😂😂😂

i commented this on another us review and this isn’t my thought but i thought it was cool (thanks to stefan_marin09 on twitter) i also saw something about how the 4 family members represent the four elements (earth, water, air, fire) : -adelaide (earth) bc she is the only one who was born on earth and knows the way down to the underground land -gabe (water) he is obsessed with his boat aka a form of water transportation, and his tether abraham dies in the water -zora (air) she is in track and a popular saying for runners is “run like the wind” (yes i know it’s a reach but it kinda fits) -jason (fire) kinda obvious, he’s obsessed with the match magic trick, pluto’s face is burned from his “trick actually working, when the tethered family first enters the house pluto is the one to light the fireplace, and he later dies by jason walking him backwards into a fire just a thought i kinda enjoyed

When I saw the movie (recently on TV), I can't help but wonder about the Tethered. What happens to them now? Jason looks like he knows about his mom, but does he accept "her"? Would "her" husband accept "her"? Would "her" family accept her? I'm not really sure how Jordan Peele feels about sequels, but if he did make one, would Jason and his "mother" keep their secret or would the secret be left out in "breadcrumb form" for "her" family?

Loved your reaction.... if I could gage a suggestion: bunnies usually live underground. The "tethered" do the same. Think about if you had to live in the air. You're primary source of food would be whatever was sky bound. Birds, and wayward balloons would likely be your nutrition

My thoughts on why the tethered suddenly aren't forced to mirror their upper-world counterparts, is because of the fact Adelaide is a huge shake up in the structure of the tethered. She was not bound by the restrictions since she isn't one and thus broke the cycle. It's an interesting commentary that all it takes is one person to change everything.

The movie was interesting, but shouldn't have gone the Sci-Fi route. It doesn't work when you think things through, such as "Why was her double at the beach when she was only visiting for vacation? Did Red run back and forth through the tunnels to live under her actual hometown?" "How does the protagonist remember what happened before she was switched, when that would have been Red's memories?" They should have gone full Fantasy with Changelings or something similar.

White rabbit: alice in wonderland, through the looking glass, didn't notice the Jeremiah 11:11 guy because we don't pay attention to the homeless, they offer the tethered material things because they live in a world where all anyone could want is stuff, they want the material things from their neighbors when they die because they still only care about looking like they have stuff and money, Adelaide can't hurt the kids because we protect our children at all costs even at our own expense until they're in real danger, Liz called the police and the thing answered for her 'f the police' cause they came straight from the underground. :D

Many people had this theory that the kids in the red suits were actually the kids from the doppelgänger that disguised herself as the real Adelaide on the surface but that wouldn't make sense since they have been switched as little kids so the kids are actually the ones that they gave birth to individually.

A lot of times we tend to view people who are different from us as inferior or strange (homeless people, lower class, etc) , so the we're Americans line is showing us how we're more alike than we think. We all live in this country, we're all Americans regardless of our social class.
