US Marines Recruits Attempt Swim Qualification

U.S. Marine Corps recruits participate in swim qualification at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. The recruits learned various water survival techniques to prepare them for situations they could encounter while aboard a ship or in combat. As a part of the test, recruits learn to quickly shed heavy equipment that could pull them underwater, safely leap into deep water, use issued equipment to stay afloat and keep their heads above water while wearing a full utility uniform. The recruits are with Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion.

swim qual for the 25m is done in 4 foot water. You get instructed that no part of your body is to touch the deck and no part of your head is allowed to touch water. Stack that with being sleep deprived, stressed, hungry and wearing a uniform and boots (which when get wet are heavy af) and having low body fat so you don't naturally float.

Same as 83 boot in San Diego. We did the same thing. Once we had the pants filled with air. Worked pretty good. I was and expert swimmer prior to boot. Was still a struggle when cammies and everything. I eventually was expert in swim qual. We had to dive in. Be underwater for half the pool. Slowly rise out of the water as if there was a oil fire. Was cool. Only 6 of us made it

The question is similar to, what happens if you can't make it through MIT.. You get kicked out, and you find a less intense college with less honor. In this case, watch the video. You get "motivated" a lot. (screamed at reassuringly :) ). Afterwards, if you continue to fail, you either get discharged from the military, or more likely, you get discharged from the marines and go to a less prestigous branch, and you can't say SEMPER-FI anymore, (possibly one of the few reasons why people want to be marines... jk)

Matthew Wright when I was in boot camp in January 09 we had a black kid that kept unking swim qual. He ended up passing after failing countless times but one of our DI's made him dump his foot locker set it on the quarterdeck, sit in it, while paddling, singing row row row your boat. Our kill hat said "damnit if you can't swim your ass is guna learn how to row" couldn't hold the laughter in on that one quite a few people ended up getting IT'd for losing their bearing myself included.

So this stuff is actually pretty easy. I did it. What is difficult is the advanced and intermediate swim test. You have to swim a lot farther in your uniform with boots on. Tread water for a longer amount of time, and demonstrate that you know all swim techniques. However the only people who had an issue with the swim quail were people who didn’t know how to swim at all.

This was my worst nightmare during my BT in Pendleton. I had the fear of swimming strucked by many traumatic experiences from the past. thus I never learned or know how to swim. This is actually harder then it looks. I had to take a swim test for crew where I had to swim with sweat clothes on.

That looks way different/easier than what we did in 06. Not to knock thee new recruits, but did the CWS standards change?

one of the few things at boot camp i found a easy one even with boots on but i saw a lot fail and even after trying to help them just no hope and the ones from the big city up north did not know how to swim at all

The people on here saying negative things about these recreuits that selfless for OUR USA are really f&@$d up u should be thankful there are guys like this willing to do this for US f all u haters

That's what I did so I can be a lifeguard, but the. I realized, they are wearing heavy clothes and have to do this everyday, props to these guys, my body was sore for the next week after doing it for only one day
