U.S. Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES/The Exchange) bakery plant and bottled water plant at Grünstadt Depot, Germany.
In the bakery plant more industrial sized machines methodically mix, measure and construct cookies, cakes, pastries, tortillas, buns and breads destined for the shelves of restaurants, commissaries and kitchens across Europe.
AAFES/The Exchange operates four bakeries overseas for military and family members (one at Grünstadt Depot, Germany and one at Camp Humphreys, South Korea and two at Yokota Air Base and Camp Kinser, Japan).

man imagine gettign deployed to Europe where there is some of the best freshly baked bread around only to find yourself eating mass produced conveyor bread

A lot of the oversea service members developed a taste for real bread after being deployed in European bases, which is why there is only 1 factory bakery in Germany, compared to one in Korea and even two in Japan, since there is a severe lack of good bread in those countries still. But more importantly, even though all these products are made in 1 single factory, they bear brands that a lot of people find familiar, which could be a comforting presence for many young men and women whose deployment is the first time they've come anywhere far away from their hometown, let alone out of the country. Homesickness is a widespread issue.

German bread was definitely better, but if you lived in the barracks you were pretty much stuck with the AAFES bread in the mess hall. It was almost impossible to get off base during the hours that most of the small local bakeries were open and we didn't store food in the barracks.

Yes a lot of people have mentioned that when in Europe. Canada is the same; we don't know what real bread is anymore as we've been acclimatized to the cheap stuff. That being said, going to a local bakery in either the states or Canada can get you a much better quality. Even something like Cobs bread, which is a chain....the sourdough is to die for.

I believe the products are for the base exchanges and supermarkets so the military family members can buy groceries like back in the United States. If you watch the video, you should have recognized some of the brands. I recognized Wonder Bread and Krispy Kreme doughnuts. The narrator said the bakery and the bottle factory have license agreements with American companies so that the military members and their families can a taste of home. There must be other facilities in Europe and Asia that have the same agreements. It's nice to have something to remind you of home. I don't know if you served in the armed forces, but ask anyone who were stationed overseas or any sailor or marine stationed on a ship, they will tell you stuff like that makes you feel good about serving your country. I did.

i remember reading a interview of a german pow from ww2 who was given a kration while being detained in a work camp. he said if germany had this quality of food they would have won the war. so the most important yet invisible part of any war is the logistics. if you cant feed and supply troops domestically or at a front line base the war is already lost.

The bakery is making bread, doughnuts, and pastries for service members and their families. These are the same products you buy at your local supermarkets. The supermarkets are either on base or near the base and they are called commissaries. The commissary is where members and their families buy groceries for so they can have their meals at their homes. They buy bread, meat, vegetables, and condiments, like a typical family.

Bakeries of this magnitude typically use genetically modified and bromated flour. Two of the many reasons there are more gluten and gut problems in the world today. You're better off buying ancient grain wheat berries and grinding flour yourself or purchasing ancient grain flour, which is more expensive but easier on the gut and easier for gluten-intolerant people to digest. Amazing production line, no doubt, but nothing I would want to put in my body.
@schs1977
@schs1977 9 ай бұрын
What is "ancient grain flower"? BTW - I believe it's safe to say MOST people in the military just as in the US itself, have no gluten problems.
@semperfi6801
@semperfi6801 9 ай бұрын
@@schs1977 It's flour seed and production that has been handed down for generations and not been adulterated by genetically engineering the seed. Corn, sugar cane, rice, and soybeans, along with flour for industrial commercial use, have been modified either genetically or hybridized. While the chemical round-up is a known cancer-causing agent and it's illegal to dump it into waterways, scientists place a round-up gene into the seed, and the crop can then be sprayed liberally with round-up, and it will not kill the plant, but it will kill every plant around it. I saw a farmer in Virginia kill his whole corn field a few years back because he thought he had used round-up ready seed. When the field died, well, it kind of explains itself. The wheat that's produced today is nowhere near the ancient grains grown, say, 70 years ago. Thus the reason a lot of the modern wheat produced today is less digestible. The research is out there for those that want to know. Heritage Wheat is another great wheat/flour that hasn't been hybridized or genetically modified.

We were told that whatever is sent back to us to put into the monster sink disposals we were not to talk about it or question why this had to be done. Besides the dood scraps from plates and dishes, we had to throw away down the disposal dozens of loafs of bread. It pissed me off, but we couldn’t say anything.

This is standard Food Safety. Once it is opened it NEVER goes back into stock. If you have too much bread (like if a tenant unit deployed without prior notice) and you get "fresh" stock you dump the older bread. During standard ops they can predict really closely what they need -- but once troops move around you have mess halls with too much perishable food and other mess halls that have to break out the emergency supplies. (EVERY mess hall has frozen and "B" (canned/dehydrated) rations in reserves) And if that somehow fails then there are MREs. The US learned hard lessons about keeping troops fed, every unit has a month or more stored on top of the Dining Fac reserves.
