"Aerial Tactics: High Speed, High Altitude Flight Problems" was produced by the Navy Department during the Korean War. This unique film is compelling for two reasons. First, it features truly outstanding color footage of McDonnell F2H-2 Banshee & Grumman F9F fighters operating singly and in squadron formation, dancing agilely among towering cumulus clouds and flying off carriers. Second, it opens a fascinating window on US Navy carrier launched fighter operations and tactics at the time of the Korean War.
The film addresses three main "problems" in areal tactics: intercept, escort & attack, and defense. With all the F2H or F9F discussion, just remember that in the movie version "The Bridges at Toko-Ri," the Aircraft used was an F9F Panther, but in the book, it was an F2H Banshee... Although I seem to recall the REAL event the story was based on featured F4U-4 Corsairs & AD-3 Skyraiders in the action.

The Grumman cougar is a beautiful Airplane. I love the Blue paint it sported and the straight wings it sported. Early jets were the most Gorgeous IMO.

Still relevant with Hornets. Was relevant with F-14's, F-4s, and F-8s. Combat speeds of jet fighters have leveled off at 550 knots operational speeds. Higher speeds are dash speeds on afterburner.

Note at about minute 13 that a landing aircraft (probably another F9F Panther) lands while two F9Fs are positioned on the forward catapults for ready alert--without barrier up between them. Operating jets on a straight-deck carrier (probably CV-32, USS Leyte), always risky, but I thought they at least used the barrier to catch the landing aircraft if the hook missed. Apparently not always as this video shows. A missed landing could have resulted in the deck destruction of all three planes.

Warthunder has realistic battles but has 7billion bugs where a 7.62mm can pen anything when these bugs occur lmao which is common imo . Also sounds and graphics quality is 1000x times better in world of tanks . Idk about World of warplanes, I never played it

Some people down further in the comments said most of these are F9F- Panthers, its a common mistake that people think F2H Banshees look like the Panthers, but I can tell you these are Banshees. But if I missed a tiny part in the video that showed it was a Panther, please tell me.

BTW, does anyone have any idea what type of bomber that is? I don't recognize it. In the first shots, it's obviously a twin engine jet, but in the later views I could have sworn it was a Vickers Wellington, based on the general shape (you can only see a vague silhouette). I'm sure that it's not actually a Wellington, but I'm curious; one of these obscure early 50's Navy jets, I'd guess.

all modern bombing needs to stay above gun ranch so must b 15k ht but 20 k min height better. U hve some warning time if shot at by missiles from 20k+. Hving precision bombs makes all the diff in dominance of air power.

we need 150 miles min distance to protect against avg anti ship miles 80-90s, & by 2020 protection less than 350-400 miles + not enough. Days of carriers long gone yet we still r trench fort fighting old style.

r modern fighter missiles can engage at heat 40ish miles easily, or radar easy ranch 80miles. Newer advanced radar missiles can get hits from 150 miles.

Somewhat sloppy naming for this video, as the F2H barely appears at all, especially singly. It finally puts in a few brief appearances in the last five minutes (the defensive tactics part), mostly cruising around in formation. For the most part, this is a film of the F9F Panther--a MUCH more produced plane. The title here is cutting potential audience by not letting Grumman fans know.

One or two of the shots were of Panthers taking off or landing. Pretty much all the flying and firing weapons footage was of Banshees. I've never seen so much footage of F2H Banshee. Great footage

+soaringtractor This video mostly shows banshees but the plane at 11:08 - 12:10 is 100% an F9F Panther. I've been reading about jet aircraft since I was kid (I'm 52 now BTW so I know what I'm looking at). I can tell the difference between these planes just by glancing at them. Heck get a couple of model jets, one an F2H and the other a Panther and hold them at the same angle at 11:59 - 12:10. It's a Panther in that shot mate ;)
