Its truly a sad state we're in that we need to caveat our political position to recognize an individual. There was a time when politics was just an approach and cooperation and compromise was the process to solutions. JC was one of the best diplomats we've ever had gracing the oval office. It's sad that divisions began after and taint his reputation to this day. He is a man we can all take lessons from, especially those serving.

No? I live in the Netherlands, province Limburg. In the south of the province: the American Military Cemetary in Margraten is situated. Every year there is a flyover, The Missing Man Formation, on Memorial Day. I live some 50km to the north and when the fformation is on its way to the cemetary, they fly over my hometown. Even then it's impressive, still in the normal formation, to see but also to know where they going, what they doing and why!

I'm from Ireland, I'm now 48, so I was much too young to remember President Jimmy Carter, but looking back on material, for me personally, he was my favourite American President, I know a lot of Americans will disagree with me, that's your privilege in democracy, but President Carter to me, was the Prince of Peace, he had a deep Christian faith, his lovely souther style Georgian accent, his hubris, his modesty, his humility, his humanity, lacking in all American presidents since. He had no ego. His conversations were always adult like, environmentally, and he was way ahead of his time. Jimmy Carter was a decent human being. Ot was never about him. It was always about others. The United States is the poorer without this gentleman. I think he was too kind for the ruthless nature of politics.

Was not a huge fan of Carter but I respected him as a human being of caring and dignity. The formal funeral arrangements for a head of state are filled with ceremonies including lying in state at the Capital, the funeral procession, the 21-gun salute, and the fly-over and missing man formation -- as a former service member in the USAF the missing man formation is particularly impactful and leaves a lump in your throat and a tear on your cheek. It is fascinating that the 21-gun salute and missing man formation are both militaristic things with one using artillery and the other, usually, fighter planes. But Carter served in the military and he deserves that formality.
