Went NUPOC in 1971. 3.67 GPA in engineering. Flew me up to Crystal City to run the route and had my 3 minutes with “THE ADMIRAL”. Reported to Newport RI 6 weeks after graduation.

I still think the NUPOC program is the best deal in the Navy!

just came back from the Tour. Went on the USS Scranton. I think I’ll stick with Surface.

Update: Went through MEPS but need 2 medical waivers (tough ones too), but recruiters say they think I have a good shot to go to DC interview. I will be graduating with BSME (This week is final week). Also landed a great paying job in a multi-billion company (This is acting as a backup plan as of now incase I don't get in). I'm not joinning for the benefits, but for the experience and pristige. I am preparing for the tech interview as of now while waiting for waivers.

So what exactly is the difference between the NUPOC program and just the general nuclear program? Like... My son's father is in the nuclear program in South Carolina. He's just finished a-school and is about to start power school to be an mmn, but his process was so much different than what was described here.

Nupoc is essentially a college scholarship for officers. They get paid enlisted e6 pay while in school and then commission as nuclear officers when they graduate

Congrats to him for finishing up A-school! NUPOC is specifically for the officer route while a person is in college. All officers and enlisted go through Navy Nuclear Power School in Charleston prior to Prototype and ultimately the submarine/ship (curriculum is slightly different as well for Officer vs. Enlisted). However, before Power School officers either commission through NUPOC (via OCS), ROTC, or the Naval Academy.

@@blessed8543 yes, the earlier you get in the better! I think the earliest is 30 months prior to college graduation, but that may have changed.

I heard in NUPOC, boot camp is still a step, how long was that?

Officer Candidate School (OCS) is 12 weeks in Newport, RI. Instructors and Naval Reactors’ Engineers go to Officer Development School (ODS), which is also in Newport but slightly different. This school will be as soon as they can send you once you graduate college. Once you graduate OCS, you earn a commission and become an officer. I’m not too familiar with ODS, but think they commission prior to graduating.

Hello sir, I'm a third class at NNPTC with an associates degree and was wondering would this change how I apply for the NUPOC program and would I have to go through OCS? I was going to serve my six years and go LDO but this program seems like the right choice. Any recommendations on ny course of action? I haven't been to the command career counselor yet just doing some research before I go to their office. Sorry for long list of questions.

Hello! Hope power school is going well:) First off, definitely talk to the career counselor to figure out all of your options. LDO is very different than being a nuke officer. The only LDO officers that I know of that get their submarine warfare devices are AWEPS on some of the boomers. Most of the nuke LDOs end up doing some sort of nuke support role on carriers (I know very little about what LDOs do). My initial thought is that the NUPOC would only be for you if you decide to get out of the Navy and then go to school to finish your bachelors. I do not know if this is possible for priors, would have to ask a recruiter or counselor. It may have some weird conflict with the GI Bill, but I really don’t know. And also, this would limit you to nuke Officer roles only. Depending on what you want to do, STA-21 and USNA are good options for route to officer. I don’t know how many credits from your associates degree these colleges would take however. If you want to get away from nuclear power I hear USNA will allow for more options whereas STA-21 usually wants nukes to stay nuke officers (rumors so definitely do more research if you go this route). Another option is to finish up your bachelors while you are in the service and apply for OCS. This is way easier said than done, especially if you are a submariner. You may only have time to finish a bachelors on shore tour, but definitely ask a career counselor. Hopefully that helps!

@Mike White thank you sir for the video and for your reply! Power school is hard but you know gotta get through it. I'm unfortunately to old for USNA but I'm going to attend the STA-21 briefs and see how that goes. I hope you had a good holiday and happy new year!
