Wow awesome. I scored a 92 on my asvab and I’m waiting to be sent out to basic training. I’m so happy I chose Navy nuke and start my career. Best of luck!

@@AngelSanchez-yw5uw it’s awesome. It’s really challenging in school and I have no life other than studying but I have my own car and in a few months I’ll be living in my own house. And I’m only 19. Professionalism and integrity are the biggest things here so you can’t do anything “bad”. I’d say it’s been the best choice of my life. Not only that the 40k bonus and 100k reenlistment bonus is going to be great

This video has been really helpful. I’ve been waiting to talk to someone from the nuke shop at MEPS for a while now and have yet to be contacted by them. With only an hour of watching videos, including this one, has given me more insight into the program and answered questions I didn’t know I should ask. I really appreciate the ratio of depth in the video to its length. Now I have a way better idea of what I signed up for. Thanks so much!

@1:20 ? what ? The first submarine to circumnavigate the globe under nuclear power ? You're referring to the Triton (SSRN-586) , which did so in 1960. Interestingly enough it was the only NNPP submarine to have two onboard reactors (S4G). The Nautilus (SSN-571) was the first naval vessel to reach 90N under the polar ice caps in 1958 during operation Sunshine.

I was a Navy nuke for a 21-year career. I spent 16 of those years operating Naval nuclear propulsion plants, 3 years on shore in Idaho, 13 years at sea. It is a job and not much adventure. It is a hot, sweaty job that requires much longer hours than folks elsewhere in the Navy. It is not conducive to family life when inport and especially when in routine overhaul in a shipyard. Do not believe the recruitment-hype from the Navy. Anyone considering entering this program should have a frank discussion with someone already performing as a Navy nuclear operator, someone who has been doing this job for more than four years, to get a real outlook at what may lie ahead. Do I regret serving as a Navy nuke for all those years? No, not at all. Even all the bad times taught me things that have been helpful in life after retirement.

"It is not conducive to family life..." I met a subber who married a Filipena. That was the end of his sub life. He ended up alone raising his daughter on welfare. The Navy needs to make its policies blunt about women blunt. They will ruin fewer lives that way.

Recruiters love talking about money. I wonder why they aren’t talking about not sleeping for 3 days during MTT or 5 on 10 off watches.

Great info! Ive enlisted this past month, and ship out in may. Im really excited and also a bit scared - I've heard that the schooling is very rigorous! I know I'm smart, I just need to apply myself. Do any of you have any advice on how to prepare before I ship out? thanks.

Navy Nuclear is the lowest paying job in the navy, if you count the hours you work. Cooks get paid more. Yeah, "sandwich making guy" makes more than reactor operator guy. In addition, you will have responsibilities that far exceed any other enlisted rate with little to no extra compensation, but if any mistakes are made, that will be Capt Mast (that punishment that can include reduction in rate, fines, restriction to the ship/area, and extra duties like midnight cleaning). Nukes are far more likely to be sent to Capt Mast for performance related issues than any other rate by a factor of infinity. For example, I have never seen a non-nuke ever written up based on performance issues. Nukes? All the time. Take my advice, look up your friendly Air Force recruiter. 30 section duty, 40 hour weeks, Hilton type bases. Take night college classes and after 4-6 years you will be miles ahead of any nuke with a degree or well on the way to a degree.

Debatable. Sure it sucks but a single contract sailor could walk off the boat with a really good rep for getting a job. Not arguing the work part though M-Div on Kentucky right now actually lol. Job sucks but you don’t get anywhere close to the resume of a nuke going to college.
@richardfrench28632 жыл бұрын
@@sullivancain5412 An engineering degree far exceeds a 6 and out nuke. All you do is clean, do some simple maintenance, some PM's and that is it. I was there, remember. The job is so easy a 19yo can do it. (easy as in intellectually easy) That was my age when I was fully qualified. It provides a place for you start in Civ Lant in the trades...at the BOTTOM. Apprentice. Sorry. Facts. Signed, Sr PM at a nuke plant.
@sullivancain54122 жыл бұрын
@@richardfrench2863 by fully qualified you mean literally every qual you can do in a submarine engine room right? Because no offense I’m an M-Diver qualified SRO and EWS at my 2 year point on board. Also USMaps is a thing, bunch’s guys have said it’s done them good. I’m not saying it’s perfect man but not everyone is gonna go to some nuclear plant when they get out. At least I know I’m not. Sorry TA isn’t really an option with current work schedules and Optempos, shipyards have pulled most support and ships force is having to take a lot back. Who knows I’ve got 4 years and I’ll find out if all of it has done me any good.

I retired last year, but yeah I made more than most people with advanced degrees...Allot more. As far as an engineering degree, I have no degree, worked as an engineer and was rated higher than most of them.. A few years ago INPO figured out that engineers were weak on fundamentals, so they gave a test to see what the situation was. Only one engineering group at my plant had no one who failed that test, I aced it. Thanks NPS!
