Using active sonar is like shining a bright flashlight into the sky in an open field on a moonless night. It gives your position away and if they were tapping Chinese commutation cables (which is what they probably were doing) it would have been far too dangerous to use active sonar... So to navigate they rely on sea charts (unfortunately 90% of the world's oceans aren't accurately mapped), The South China Sea (along with the entire Western Pacific Region) is extremely seismic and geologically active. It takes a special type of sailor with giant ball of titanium to volunteer to serve in a double steel tube with a nuclear reactor surrounded by tens of thousand of pounds of pressure of water and navigate using maps that may or may not be accurate due to the constantly changing ocean bottom...

The Guanlan satellite sent data to the Super Measurement Center in Jinan to estimate the position of the USS Connecticut. -China’s special detection device captured the ultra-low frequency sonar signals from the bow of the Connecticut and transmitted the data to the Sonar Analysis Center in Shanghai to accurately locate the position and depth of the USS Connecticut (1500 Meters). -The Type 927 underwater acoustic detection ship stationed on Yongshou Island and the anti-submarine helicopter stationed on Yongxing Island were dispatched to track the USS Connecticut. -The Yun-8 military plane took off from the Hainan Air Force Base and carried out "sonic bombing” of the Connecticut with “sonic bombs” causing the submarine's personnel to be extremely uncomfortable due to the sonic shock and forcing the submarine to try to escape. -The Chinese HSU001 unmanned submarine slipped silently to attach itself to the bow of the Connecticut, away from its nuclear power plant, for a close local explosion attack, causing serious damage to the bow of the USS Connecticut and loss of it's sonar navigation capabilities. The nuclear power plant of the USS Connecticut was not affected, thus preventing nuclear leaks from the submarine into the sea. -The Connecticut nuclear submarine which lost it's underwater submarine capability, was forced to float up and surrender. Due to the close surveillance of the navy and air force of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, military aircraft and ships from the six countries of the United States, Japan, Britain, Australia, Holland, and Canada dared not come to rescue the USS Connecticut in their South China Sea exercise. Instead the USS Connecticut was "escorted" by the Chinese Navy and Air Force before being released back to the US. -October 7th-The United States announced the Connecticut accident in an obscure manner. -October 7-The Chinese Foreign Ministry urgently requested for details of the USS Connecticut incident from the US. -October 22-The Chinese monitoring system detected another US nuclear submarine entering the South China Sea again near Huangyan Island. The Chinese military also forced the submarine to float up and limped to Guam. The US nuclear submarines can no longer hide in the Waters off CHINA. Game over for US submarines. Without the protection of its submarines, the US aircraft carrier fleet can easily become the targets of China's Dongfeng 21D, Dongfeng 26 and Dongfeng 17. Without the strength of it's aircraft carrier fleet, it will be game over for the US military in the South China Sea. So Paul Keating of AUSTRALIA was dead right to say PM Morrison is wasting billions buying nuclear subs which China can hunt and destroy easily.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that someone is mining waterways with thousands of mines that aren't actually explosive, instead they're made of heavy but bouyant materials that will damage subs when hit as we've seen here, doing so would make sense. I'd do it as a way to block subs from entering particular areas without surfacing, making themselves known.

@thulomanchay Hi, You're right it could, In the near future it wouldn't surprise me if someone developed drone subs with spikes sticking out of the front to use them for ramming enemy subs & ships to either sink them or damage them enough to take them out of the fight. That sounds like a good idea to me. Without crews to take into consideration they can be powered down at depth waiting to get a ping, then once it's confirmed as a priority target they can power up and go to ramming speed, they could take out some very expensive assetts that way. There could also be drone mines with high explosive charges that hide making them very difficult to detect until it's too late. The possibilities are endless & scary.

Passive sonar is quite limited in detecting stuff that isn't making noise and subs rarely use active sonar, as that would defeat the whole purpose of subs, which is stealth.
