I trained briefly in college a long time ago as a member of the men's crew at UCLA; and this is a really good overview of how to use an ergometer. As far as damper settings go, what really matters is something called drag factor. I usually set the drag factor to somewhere around 130-140, which provides a decent balance between a cardiovascular and strength workout. By the way, I love the clips they cut to at the end after he says rowing is a great exercise anyone can enjoy.

The thing about the Concept2 is that your drive determines the resistance, just like in water. Think of moving your hand through water in a pool. Move your hand slowly, and it moves easily. Drive your hand as hard and fast as possible, and you'll feel a ton of resistance. On the rower, remember that the drive and the recovery shouldn't be the same speed. Your drive should be fast and explosive, giving you the higher resistance you're looking for, and your recovery should be slow and easy.

Think of rowing like riding a bike so watch the videos and put the time in to get technique right - probably only an hour or two altogether. You don't get it from the first minute but once you get it you get it. I'd say only 1 person in 50 can actually use the concept 2 properly in the gym (and that took me a year to make that observation as they are used so little). It's really the best piece of aerobic equipment (forget the treadmill) - although the airdyne is pretty good. I'm nothing amazing or even good and row 2 minute 500s but this and outdoor cycling is my go to.

Rowing becomes anaerobic, especially in the last 1/4 mile. You are working at an oxygen deficit. It's like distance running or wrestling. I remember my workouts: going 10 miles and having coach turn us around for a workout, after running from campus to the boathouse and running stadium steps which get steeper, the higher you go and your legs shake and you feel like throwing up after doing 10. And then there's the ERG. And the butterflies before races. I rowed from 6th grade through college and loved it. Rowed with Olympians.

Rowing is the best!! I wish she would have explained why she thinks it is bad to work the rowing machine at the highest setting. I love the resistance I get from the highest setting and often wish I could make it higher. And I also sometimes add curls to my rowing machine workout just for fun (never on the water in a real rowing situation, just on a machine) by alternating regular strokes with curl strokes and I have gotten amazing and super fast results in my biceps from doing this...
@IGenius20135 жыл бұрын
Often it’s bad to work at a higher setting, especially if you are newer, is because it puts more strain on the back and a lot of inexperienced rowers will hurt themselves as a result. Generally the only time you’ll see a tower put the drag factor at 10 is if they are doing a sprint piece, ie, 500

Would have liked to have heard the experts talk about a stroke rate. I have friends doing all the wrong things. Damper set to 10 and rowing at like 30 strokes per minute.

If you are just starting to use an erg take your time and work within your limits. The athletes here are world class, that’s why you see them pushed beyond their limits in the cut always. If new to the sport you are far better off on a slow rating of 20 to 22 at half pressure. Set the damper to around 5 and row for around 30 minutes. This will help build your stamina, loose weight and gain fitness. It’s surprising how quickly you improve.

How to train for 5000m? i mean everytime i row i always row full speed trying to beat my time heheh but that cant be good and how you`re supposed to train for 5KM row?? I am well trained but it has beren long since i done conditon at this lvl at least cause its hard on on the lungs!! how often can you try to break your PR?? and @ 20-22 rate what does that translate to every 500M like 2:10?? tanx for info you`re the first to explain good for new ppl i like that tanx in advanced!!

Watching this video I have to ask where should the rower handle be when against your body, should it be around your abdomen area or higher, in the demonstration shown the lady instructor had the handle high up her torso, is that correct, just want to make sure I’m doing my row stroke correctly as I’m relatively new to rowing.

There is one point you don't talk about in your video and it is about breathing. If I see the end of the video correctly, it seems to me that the exhalation is done when you pull on the handle (i.e. at the moment of the effort), and that the inhalation is done when you return to your feet (so to speak). Correct?

I was taught to breath as needed and avoid any temptation to match the breathing cycle to any part of the rowing cycle. I don't know what the basis for that is but after some practice I was able to completely ignore conscious breathing and instead concentrate on the rhythm. It worked for me on the concept 2, each session was really enjoyable, almost trance-like.

I just started rowing today instead of doing weight lifting and cardio, I think two days of the week I will do some chest but for the most part, I’m going full on rowing from now until however long. I’m going to post videos of my journey. Literally just saw a guy today at the gym doing those curling rowing they said is a big no no haha I’m glad I didn’t copy.

The action was different in the boat to on the machine. On the boat the hands performed more of an arc and finished in the lap in order to contact the water. On the machine the hands finished at the chest

Started a 45 workout, no rest periods, about 30s/m at around a 5 intensity setting. Feels fine after a few weeks. Thoughts as to value of this workout? Thx
@dansalon32673 жыл бұрын
My imput is that for steady state workouts, row at a lower stroke rate (more like 20-26), and do something more like 2x30 minutes or 2x6k rather than a single 45 minute piece.

Thanks for the video - very informative. I’m very unfit (obese), but for some reason I seem to find the rowing machine very very easy. From day one, I haven’t been able to tell the difference between settings 1 to 10 - they all feel ‘too easy’. After the first stroke, it feels as though I’m just ‘topping up’ the fan which is already spinning really fast. Is there something I’m missing? Is there some way to make it more taxing? Many thanks for any advice!
@robertpettersson62446 жыл бұрын
I am by no means an expert but going to give it a go answering your question. I started rowing a year ago. When I started I felt like you described, that it was too easy. I felt I could just go forever without tiring. The reason was I didn't have the correct technique and didn't realize how hard I actually could explode and push during the drive. Also the number of strokes I did per minute was fairly low. When I started to correct these things my rowing sessions became pure hell( goal achieved!). You can push yourself so freaking hard on a rowing machine it's crazy. Have never tried a sport as taxing mentally. But it requires technique first and foremost and then learning to use power and intensity with the technique. You need to have it down before you can understand how hellish rowing really can be. To get the technique down what I did was check tutorials for how to divide a rowing stroke into different segments, catch, drive, finish, recovery. Then when I rowed I was super careful to do each stroke with this in mind, making intentional tiny pauses in between each phase of the stroke, "moving like a stiff robot". After a couple of weeks I started to let everything flow together more. At this point I could increase power and intensity while still having a good form since I had "brainwashed" myself with the segmented training. Now when I row I don't really have to think in terms of catch, drive etc. It's just a fluid motion, all parts blends together. Still because of the segmented training the stroke has technique( which is not perfect I am sure but it's adequate, night and day from when I started). Hope it was somewhat helpful. Hard to explain. Rowing is fantastic. Good luck.

If it is a Concept2, use the PM5 monitor's Utilities function to discover and adjust the "drag factor". Basically, you pull a few times while that function is on and the PM5 will tell you the current drag factor. Then, adjust the damper setting to put the drag factor to about 130. A drag factor of 130-135 or so is what male rowers (even elites) frequently use.
