At 12:02, you can see the famous "Federer Moment" David Foster Wallace was talking about early in his superbly written article 'Federer as Religious Experience' (NY Times, August 20, 2006). Just love Big Mac saying "how do you hit a winner from that position?" :-)

Even Agassi with a bad back, tired after 3 straight 5 setters, gave Prime Fed all he could handle for 3 sets. Agassi was equally strong from both wings, his backhand down the line paid a ton of bills. Great drop shots, great court positioning, great point construction. Only Connors, Agassi, and Federer were/are still a force to be reckoned, and a threat to go deep in slams in their mid 30s. What a fantastic match.

I remember that match well. The second and third set was arguably the best tennis Agassi played in his entire career. It´s ridiculous to what level he could raise his game, making winners from any position on the court. But on the other hand, how great is Federer to make Andre play like this. Agassi was finished after the third set both physically and emotionally, but he went down all guns blazing. What a great match.
@herbertperebynis98179 жыл бұрын
***** I don´t. He was 35 and had chronic problems with his back. But the intensity Agassi put into every tournament since his comeback in 1998, when he dropped out of the top 100, was incredible. Since then he played every match like it could have been his last. Gone was the sometimes lacklustre Andre Agassi from the early years of his career. Another bit that added to Agassi´s lasting legacy of a sportsman.
@seruresto13869 жыл бұрын
Not his best tennis, but the best tennis he could play at 35 with a bad back. Its matches like these that play proof to just how foolish younger fans are when they talk about how superior modern players are and that guys like Pete and Andre and Becker and Lendl wouldnt be top players in todays game.

What a terrific match! As an Agassi fan, I would love to have seen this match if Agassi had a full tank. At age 35 and a terrific summer season, he beat Ivo Karlovic in 3 tiebreakers in Rd 2, a young Tomas Berdych in 4 sets (Rd 3), Xavier Malisse in 5 sets (4th Rd), Blake in a classic 5 setter (QF), Robby Ginepri playing the tennis of his career (5 sets, SF), and still gave Roger all he could handle. You can almost see the point in the 3rd set tiebreaker where Andre runs out of gas.

All these comments about Federer playing in the "weak era" are as pointless as me saying how Safin (part of Federers prime era) destroyed Djokovic 6-0, 6-2, 6-1 in the AO in 2005. Djokovic wasn't in his prime... and neither is Federer now, yet at 33 he still took Wimbledon to 5 sets against the #1... Federer just demolished everyone in his era and made them look weak when realistically they weren't.
@ciosnek59 жыл бұрын
kanzenseiha88Argument about Safin is pointless. Djoko was 170 then... And Safin was the only player that could fight Federer then (when he was healthy). Apart from him Agassi was the only one who could hurt Fed at the big stage. Federer was ginious those times. But he didn't have consistent rivals he had later.

numcaps2 What I meant is that it was weaker era.
@mattheweberly1239 жыл бұрын
kanzenseiha88 I think tennis players from about 2010-onward are more skilled but less talented. All you have to do is outhit them from the baseline, and for the top players like Djokovic and Murray, its not overly difficult to do. People say its a strong era; I say its a weak era that's very top heavy. There's a reason why the Big 4 has dominated so much. Players don't have to outthink their opponents anymore in order to win because their games are so mechanical and formulaic. Against players like Safin and Agassi, not only did you have to outhit them, but you had to stay aggressive the whole match and outthink them in the process. Against players like Berdych, Tsonga, Monfils, etc. you just have to outhit them and be capable of withstanding their hot streaks. You couldn't ever coast against Roddick or play ping pong with Tommy Haas or hit 30 cross court drill style groundies against David Nalbandian. Guys today are like factory products. If you can beat one, you can beat them all, which is why the same guys win every tournament. The only reason people think this is a strong era is because its top heavy and Federer isn't winning every major. But if he was, you can be sure that *some people* would whine about a weak era where a guy past his prime can win multiple major tournaments.

+Varun Subramanian Yep, the ATP has gone way, way too far in slowing everything down. This crap has got to stop. Even in the 90s, court speeds differed greatly. Now, with everything slowed down, you have to be a defensive grinder to win because it's so hard to put winners away on these courts. And not everybody should have to play one style to win. That wasn't the case with S&V.

@MaratSafinVideos When Federer began his career in 1998, the Aus Open was still slower than then US Open, Wimbledon grass was the fastest surface and the French was slow as ever. Federer won his first 3 Wimbledons on a fast surface and as did he win his first 3 Aus Open titles on a surface similar to the one we see in Melbourne today. In my opinion, the US Open is the only GS where the surface has stayed the same over the years, not becoming slower or faster than it used to be.

Mike H Indeed he was hitting much harder, given his youth at the time. But even though he doesn't hit as hard, he has learned to play smart and construct points beautifully rather than harshly hitting winners out of nowhere. But also, the US Open has a weird camera angle (which I like) where it just makes it harder to focus on the ball, so it appears much faster than, say, the courts at Cincinatti which are supposed to be very similar in speed.

@MaratSafinVideos Gotta agree you're right in some way. However, tennis is one of those games, unlike cricket for instance, that has evolved drastically in one way or the other, ours not to reason why. Federer appeared on the scene shortly after Sampras' decline when serve and vollyers were disappearing and baseline players like Roddick were on the rise. Federer had to adapt, he started his career as a serve-and-vollyer and soon became an all-court player.
@addy7222213 жыл бұрын
@LegendKiller0084 I agree, the Fed-Nadal rivalry stats are just numbers, with a vast majority of their matches having being played on clay. The only reason they've played so much on clay is because Federer was the second-best clay courter out there, and reached clay-tournament finals where he lost to Nadal. Had Federer not been that good on clay, the numbers would tell a different story.

Playing at his best to win the Aussie in '95, make the Wimbly semis and the Us Open final while winning 3 Masters tourneys and a finalist at another, and in '99 winning Roland Garros, finals of Wimbly, and winning the US Open (also 3 semis and one title on Masters tour). He may have played better than a vast number of 35 year olds at that age, but it wasn't his prime. Same can be said about Sampras 2000-2002 or Federer in 2012.

Eines der besten Spiele! Federer am Gipfel seines Könnens! Agassi leider schon am Ende seiner Karriere!! Aber immer noch gut in Form!

Yeah , it is the same one because we hear McEnroe say the same thing. But it's not at all what David Foster Wallace describes. If you go to nytimes and look it up (I can't post the link), for example he says Agassi was at the net. Great piece though haha

i dont know definitively either, there were more great matches when courts were quicker. i read somewhere that they thought the popularity of tennis was in decline at some point and the solutions that the powers that be had was to slow the courts down.

I WATCHED THIS MATCH FROM THE USTA PRESIDENTS BOX. AMAZING THE SOUND OF THE BALL OFF THEIR RACQUET. THE LIST OF FOLKS WHO EVER HIT A BALL CLEANER THAN AGASII IS PRETY DAMN SHORT.

i was able to watch this live when i was 7, and this, in my opinion is a better tennis than today's. it's more exciting. unlike today's game, it's getting kind of boring, because of the long rallies. i bet if Roger retires, this game will be out of the picture, unless another Roger will come or maybe a more exciting type of player. no offense meant. this what i personally feel :)

@MaratSafinVideos @LegendKiller0084 All I'd like to say is I respect both of your opinions, but i'd like to mention my own analysis of what's going on. Agassi: Big return, immaculate backhand and thunderous forehand. Federer: Unbelieveably agile, incredible forehand and accurate backhand. Let's break this down, Agassi managed to steal a set off Federer because his game was perfect when compared to Federer's game. Similarly, Sampras' game was perfect for him when playing Agassi.

There's nobody who ever hit a ball cleaner than Agassi.

None of the young whippersnappers right now could dispatch 36 year old Federer the way the Roger dusted Agassi here. Fed is simply the GOAT

I don't think so. Wallace states "the forehand is a topspin screamer down the line past Agassi at net, who lunges for it but the ball’s past him." At the point you mention, yes it is a winner down the line, but Agassi is not at net and the point does not unfold at all how Wallace describes. You are wrong I think.
