the late 80s and early 90s were such a magical time for world class tennis. Perhaps never to be regained.

Level was so low

@@airkuna That's such a stupid thing to comment. This was just the very beginning of the power baseline stuff we see today through better racquets, strings, and conditioning. These were the best players in the world playing at the peak of their abilities for the time. The level was very high.

Agassi once said that Lendl was tougher to play against than Becker, because Lendl never ever plays a bad match. Agassi also said if Becker is playing great, sorry you have no chance.
@gildylan87037 ай бұрын
yeah well, his head to head against Becker would prove otherwise and his match up with the Terminator wasn't in his favour, although he was't quite ready in those early years

Well that's nice yet Lendl played horrible in the '88 US Open final versus Wilander. Disagree please.

Winning Wimbledon AND Us Open of 1989 and still not being able to end 1989 as the world number one. That was strange. I love Becker! But I check and ok, Lendl won Australian Open in 1989.

I really like this format of extended highlights. All the fluff is deleted leaving the action. Amazing match by the way.

Lendl once said that Becker was either hot or cold. When you played him in the final of a tournament it means that he is hot and that you might lose.
@amitmarathe232Ай бұрын
Becker actually made Lendl look inadequate from the baseline which was unthinkable especially at the US open. It was the pinnacle of Becker’s career. You can see Lendl going to his back up plan of serve and volley as he was not able to force the initiative from the baseline. Lendl played well but Becker played better when it mattered.

@ronjose225610 ай бұрын
@uwe2811 Agreed. Tennis technology today is So different as compared to the 1980’s. Two different worlds. Players today, if given the rackets used back then, would most likely play very similar tennis. 1980s compared to 2020’s… extremely different tennis worlds 🎾

Don't mean to offend anyone but Tennis back then was way better than today's. Clash of styles, clash of personalities, clash of approaches to the game itself. And the USO was the sum of that era since you might see Lendl winning with his hardcore hitting from the baseline or Becker with his net-rushing style. Nowadays I reckon we have amazing players but basically they all play the same way over and over again match after match tournament after tournament. It all came down to racket head speed on the forehand and massive serves, no more no less. What a waste
