This is a professional grand slam tennis match. Start it earlier in the day. It’s ridiculous to have matches that start after midnight.

Isn't it all about tv and corporate. Early matches would screw up their ad schedule, etc. Hey, I am recovering from those after midnight finishes. It works, to some extent, if you don't have to be in the office at 9 ish, but deadly if you have to punch by 9. Play the matches earlier somehow so the thing doesn't go into the night.

Pull The Plug

Pull the plug! They should start matches early in the morning, take an afternoon siesta when the heat is the most intense, and then have night matches, but not such late ones. This would be better for players and fans.

Pull the plug on the late night matches. I have attended the U.S. Open on numerous occasions probably at least 10 or 15 as I lived in Manhattan for five years and northern New Jersey. I specifically tried to go to the day session to avoid potentially late night matches. I worked at the Miami open the past three years and I believe the players protested so much about late starts and the promise they had at the Australian open that they made a rule that they would not start any matches after 10 PM evening. They basically broke that role once and started the match at 10:10 now these are only three set matches and they got lucky that it was over I believe and two sets so they finished before midnight but there were others, when there were rain delays and times on the schedule that they shifted matches to “outside courts to get them played earlier. Was better for the staff. It was better for the volunteers who worked these events. It was better for the lines charges. it was better for the players. I believe it was better for the paying spectators. The only issue is that if a spectator pays for the Premier court i.e. Ashe at the U.S. Open or the Hard rock Arena Court in the Miami open they might have to choose between two matches that would now be going on simultaneously. I think that’s a small price to pay for not having to be there after midnight. Talk to James Blake tournament director Miami Open

If a men's 5-set match can last up to 5 hours, then the USTA should be doing everything in its power to have every match start by 5 PM locally. Please STOP running PR for the USTA (and overlooking its serial incompetence) by repeatedly asking players about the "night atmosphere on Ashe" at 1 AM in the morning when the seats are 1/3 full at best. ("Oh, it's great, blah, blah"). Even if the remaining fans create a solid atmosphere after midnight, it is a tiny fraction of what it could be if the stands were full. The increasingly empty seats on Ashe are also emblematic of what's occurring in front of TV sets all across the country. It's horrible for the sport with the game hemorrhaging opportunities to increase fan interest/media coverage. The total and willful negligence with the schedule also flies in the face of at least attempting to create a level playing field among the players, making the challenge of winning the tournament as close to even as possible. Also, the length of matches is NOT the problem. Its incompetence and a total lack of vision in the upper reaches of the USTA that has driven us to this point.

Playing tennis matches in the early morning would be much better. If some matches go 5 hours, players really need to recover. Forget about the fans, the fans will adjust to earlier times but make tennis better for the players. Stop all the midnight start times for tennis. It's disrespectful to the players who train hard, travel constantly who are already dealing with unpredictable schedules.

Rediculous! Wake players up earlier, if you have potential 5 set matches, start by 10 AM! Leave the beer drinking late night for football and hockey!
