Presidential motorcades are quite impressive. I experienced one that has remained one of the highlights of my life. In the early 1960's, President Kennedy came to Oklahoma City for the funeral of Senator Kerr of that State. After the funeral, his motorcade was headed back to Tinker Air Force base and Air Force One to return to D.C. My older brother and I drove to where the freeway would pass near our home, clambered down an embankment, held up our American flag and waited. First, motorcycle police, lights flashing...then police cars, then a V-shaped group of motorcycles..and the Presidential Limo. We waved the flag, waved our hands in greeting. As the limo grew closer, it slowed down, the rear window lowered, and the President leaned forward and waved at us. I still get tingles thinking about it.

The US gets some crazy amount of security for the president compared to mostly all other countries! In the UK, our Prime Minister drives around in a standard SUV with just some police motorbikes in front. It's quite a stark contrast. :)

When the queen traveled abroad she had just as many vehicles and cause just as much problems and unlike the US president that mainly visit large developed countries, she will normally visit when she traveled to smaller countries with less infrastructure and cause even more problems for the citizens of those countries, so thos gas nothing to do with just the US president its about security and respect when you have foreign dignitaries visiting your country. Sorry, but presidents and PMs have to do the rough work of governing, which oftentimes makes you unpopular. The Queen had her place, but I would not rank her above most politicians in her greatness. It's much easier to be "great" when your role is really symbolic/ceremonial, and you don't have to dirty yourself up with the hard work of governing and truly holding a country together. Trump might've been a great king if most of what he had to do involved ceremonial rituals and not opening his mouth except to read pre-written speeches. This is not to say that what she did was easy or that it could be done by anyone, but it's MUCH easier than what presidents and PMs have to do. This is precisely why young presidents like Lincoln and Obama aged so quickly in office.

Can be customised length depending on what family/senior staff he is traveling with and the security threats at the location plus how much support they get from the local police. They have to fly all those vehicles/security staff around the world which takes a lot of advance planning (this was at least two C-17 loads) and this was presumably very last minute as the Queen's death/funeral was not expected (well obviously she was old but there were not signs that she would die imminently). The current terrorism threat level in the UK is 3/5 which pretty much means 'low' even though the official scary description is 'substantial' plus there is a massive police operation already in place (bigger than the 2012 Olympics). The UK population does not hold firearms legally either which reduces the risks. There is a also a big UN summit back in New York with lots of world leaders next week so some of the vehicles are probably already tied up with that. Most of the world leaders are being told that they need to be taken on buses to the actual funeral ceremony to reduce the traffic chaos so this is probably the US government 'compromise'.

Exactly my thoughts! Americans sneer at the UK for having a monarchy, yet they don't realize their uncrowned leaders act more like kings (and queens) than actual monarchs. What does that have to do with anything the U.S is a republic and declared their independence from Britain but they never kept the queen as head of state. With that being said it doesn't mean that a country who decides to become a republic, the leader can not attend a state funeral. Period
