US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet with Panamanian officials on Saturday in his first international visit since taking office. The Panama Canal, a crucial global trade route, is at the heart of discussions. President Donald Trump has voiced concerns over Chinese influence on the canal and seeks to reassert US control.
Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports from Panama City.

This event is not hidden anywhere. You can find it in history books, on the internet, pretty much everywhere. As opposed to the Tainanmen Square massacre, where far more people died, and where the communist state has completely erased it from history. Nobody speaks of it, most Chinese born around and after that don't know of it, those who witnessed it are reduced to silence and in China you cannot find any information about it. Books about it are banned. Art, movies and other mediums that point to it are banned. Only Hong Kong allowed the memory of the event to be kept alive until a few years ago. Now even there the event is slowly starting to fade. Comparing the two is like comparing an ant with an elephant.

Countless cases like this, though Tiananmen was far larger with tens of thousands involved directly in the protests in Beijing alone, to say nothing of the protests elsewhere in China like Chengdu. And it was a case with global solidarity movements, a far longer duration and far bloodier ending, and it was done to the Chinese people by the "people's" government. Cases like this one here should be common knowledge in the US and world frankly, but sadly it's far more common for governments to get away with atrocities far away from their territory.

Trump over ambitious American policies will ruin its Economy more than he thinks. We should also rethink of American military bases abroad, their import products and Dollar. If it's mandatory to Use US dollar for international trade, the Americans have Liability to provide Aid to the very people it exploit.

AS AN AFRICAN I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY LATIN AMERICANS THINK OF THEMSELVES AS NATIVES
@Kratos2492

Because we have already mixed with the original natives for more than 500 years to the point where Mestizos are the majority. My father has Hispanic roots and my mother Indigenous/Afro-Caribbean. There are still many Indigenous Shires in many Latin-American countries; Panama alone has 7 and we co-exist just fine. There are highs and lows, like any human interaction around the world and its history (like Hutus and Tutsi, and Igbos and Hausas, right?).

Because they were the original people in South and some of central America, they were native Americans to those parts of America. But then they were conquered but the people are native nevertheless.

Over the years natives in Latin America survived better the invasion than USA natives. Also Panama is in a place where there's no easy gold to find so Conquistador didn't care much about that zone and few natives got killed. Panama is full of natives, or people with mixed native blood

He said it they’ve been managing the Panama Canal because it’s United States property. We built it. We constructed it. Let you get it with stipulations. You violate their stipulations. We’re taking it back.

The US first stole the land from Colombia before proceeding to build the canal. If US has the right to take back the Panama Canal because they built it, shouldn't the US return that piece of stolen land back to Colombia first ? A piece of history extracted from wikipedia explaining the aftermath of US military ships invading Colombia to steal the Panama Canal: President Roosevelt famously stated, "I took the Isthmus, started the canal and then left Congress not to debate the canal, but to debate me." Several parties in the United States called this an act of war on Colombia: The New York Times described the support given by the United States to Bunau-Varilla as an "act of sordid conquest".[38][39] The New York Evening Post called it a "vulgar and mercenary venture".[40] The US maneuvers are often cited as the classic example of US gunboat diplomacy in Latin America, and the best illustration of what Roosevelt meant by the old African adage, "Speak softly and carry a big stick [and] you will go far." After the revolution in 1903, the Republic of Panama became a US protectorate until 1939.[41]

I undersatnd why we don;t want the Chinese in there after reading Milton Friedman - At one of our dinners, Milton recalled traveling to an Asian country in the 1960s and visiting a worksite where a new canal was being built. He was shocked to see that, instead of modern tractors and earth movers, the workers had shovels. He asked why there were so few machines. The government bureaucrat explained: “You don’t understand. This is a jobs program.” To which Milton replied: “Oh, I thought you were trying to build a canal. If it’s jobs you want, then you should give these workers spoons, not shovels.”

Singapore existed before the British arrived there, albeit it was never a strategic, economic and commercial hub as it would become under British sovereignty. However, Panama is almost entirely an US creation. The state came to be because of the US. The Panama canal is a structure built with US labor and money. Panamanians had almost 0 contribution to its construction. The US was generous enough to hand over this canal, without demanding anything in return.

After putting millions of dollars into the project and losing thousands of lives building it (one source said 5,609 & another said around 20,000; so the number is probably somewhere in that range), they've broken the agreement repeatedly; we have to have some recourse!
