Excellent depiction of my beloved Panama. You told its story perfectly. I lived there in the 1990’s & have been back several times. I have been all over the country. You did a superb job of explaining each place & giving very factual information about it. Thank you for fact checking. This was a great walk down memory lane for me. I miss it so much. It’s the people & her beauty that I know some day it will be my home again. Well done.

I used to fish in the Perlas Islands. I also visited the San Blas Islands. My wife probably spent some of her most happy times there. I spent 5 years there. I especially liked the cooler and interesting area north of Panama City. Just a short drive from the cooler region was the sandy Pacific Coast. I have heard many retired Americans have moved there. I was constantly amazed how young Panamanian girls would rush up and admire my 2 young daughters. One of daughters, born in Panama, has dual citizenship.

It seems that the Kuna people practice matriarchy in terms of inheritance and ownership, and a form of communism in terms of economic structure. I lived at Ft Kobbe in 1967-70 as a dependent of a USAF officer. It was an idyllic place at that time. I remember my parents went out to the San Blas Islands from time to time. Mother said that they (Kuna) ate a lot of fish and green banana soup (this from the memory of a 5 yr old).

panama is in central America, "It is bordered by Costa Rica to the west, Colombia to the southeast, the Caribbean Sea to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the south." Just like Mexico has a part in the Caribbean, Cancun is part of the Caribbean. Panama got their independence from Columbia in 1903.

My neighbor was 30 years a canal Ship's Captain. When ships enter the canal the captain has to cede command to a Canal Ships Captain to take it through. Can't risk some drunk Russian grain ship captain "bumping" his way along. One of the most intensely negotiated points of the return treaty was when the US lease on the Zone expired US military ships would not cede command as it was a complete violation of military code as ceding command to a non-US Navy captain is considered a surrender, an act of war. So, when you see a US Navy or Coast Guard ship traversing the canal they'll be the only ships not under command of a Canal Ship's Captain.
