You know what would be an amazing addition to the game? A toggleable PiP (Picture in Picture) window that you can "pin" something to so you can keep an eye on its visuals at all times, even when you have the map in fullscreen - an example is that MiG at 3:00 - having it in that PiP Window would let you see what nailed it. Old X3 games or Earth 2160 had something like that and it was extremely useful.

The reason you can't is because IRL they didn't. Missiles really don't like to be exposed to the elements (especially salt water splashing) and were prone to misfiring and/or outright not doing anything when they were. Furthermore, especially in older missiles, the on-board electronics literally needed to warm up and start on the rail, so having it sitting there on a rail for eternity wouldn't necessarily reduce this 'boot' time. Having these 'limited' arm launchers makes you appreciate VLS cells that much more!

I know a man who was on the USS Higbee when her aft 5" turret was hit by a 250kg bomb dropped by a mig during this battle. He was a sonar technician and luckily the crew of the hit turret actually weren't in it due to a malfunction, so no one was killed. Pictures of the destroyed turret are quite interesting!

The pilot, Nguyễn Văn Bảy (B, to differentiate with another Nguyễn Văn Bảy who was an Ace with 7 kills) used a technique called 'skip bombing' to achieve the hits. He went on to score a single kill against an A-6 Intruder before the plane he piloted was hit by a missile over the sky of Thanh Hóa province. His jet crashed into a mountain in Tân Thành commune, Thường Xuân district. He was buried in the city of Thanh Hóa before being reburied at his hometown in Bạc Liêu province.

The smaller hangars / pads on the destroyers were intended for the QH-50 DASH drone helicopter. By this time, the program had been cancelled and most were withdrawn from service. Some saw use in the Vietnam War as reconnaissance / artillery spotting platforms rather than their intended ASW role to deliver torpedoes to distant contacts (which was supplanted by ASROC on these ships).

ASROC and DASH are complimentary systems, ASROC did not replace DASH. To use a Soviet metaphor, SS-N-14 is sort of like the DASH drone of the Soviet navy in terms of role while the ASROC is sort of the RBU-6000 of the USN

Looks awesome! I appreciate its pre-release only, but it would be good if you could pre-load missile rails and assets for planned most likely use. It would minimise load/activation times as realistic, but also make the waiting rounds more vulnerable too. I’ve also seen other vids where aircraft are launched, but from hangers below decks, it would make more sense if they were able to be positioned on the cats or heli deck, too. Looks a top game!

From Wikipedia on this event: The Gulf of Tonkin DLG AAW pickets normally operate with a DD escort but, during April 1970, Sterett operated at a modified PIRAZ station 20NM from the North Vietnamese coast with the cruiser USS Oklahoma City, COMSEVENTHFLT embarked, as her escort. This was a plot to lure out a MiG from the airbase at the Bai Thuong Air Base, which at that time was the base for three MiG-21 and three MiG-19 fighters. Oklahoma City had EMCON (EMission CONdition) set to simulate the normal DD escort and Sterett passed track information on hostile aircraft over North Vietnam to the Talos ship via the Navy RED secure voice (KY-8) net and the NTDS Link 14 teletype. Although this missile trap was well-conceived, there was no MiG activity over Bai Thuong during this period. [...] On 7 January 1972, Sterett traveled on her second tour of duty off the Vietnamese coast. She departed for the Gulf of Tonkin and remained on PIRAZ station when on 21 February 1972 became the first United States Navy ship to direct the downing of a MiG-21 by Air Force Combat Air Patrol. During her second line period of the deployment, Sterett participated in the downing of two more MiGs (30 March) and brought down another with a salvo of Terrier missiles during the Dong Hoi engagement on 19 April. Later on that day, she launched a second salvo of Terriers at an unidentified target, probably a Styx surface-to-surface missile, destroying it in midair. After adding two more successful pilot rescues to her tally, she returned to Subic Bay on 22 May.[1]

A quick explanation of the difference between weapons hold/tight/free in this game, as explained to me by other contributers on the discord: Weapons Hold: the unit will never use weapons, ever, not even in self-defense. Weapons Tight: the unit will only shoot in self-defense, for example, if a hostile ship fires a missile. Weapons Free: the unit will automatically engage hostile targets in range without being prompted. In none of these settings will your units ever engage unidentified units on their own. I do expect the devs to eventually change this, but for now, unless you don't want your ships/planes to engage on their own, there is no reason not to use weapons free.

I mean, these Migs were at low altitude and basically mast-bombing, and irl would score a hit. Also, the Argentinians were able to inflict a lot damage to the Royal Navy via dumb bombs in the Falklands War: "6 fuses better and we would have lost" -Lord Craig.

This gives me an idea, could you do an aircraft carrier strike on a Russian port as a scenario? It would be extra dangerous to do it somewhere in the Black Sea >:) My idea is “NATO intelligence has gathered definitive information that the soviet ships they have been tracking are staging for a breakout from the Mediterranean within the port of Novorossiysk in the Black Sea; using your small detached carrier strike force you are to strike the enemy in port and defeat the enemy before they become a threat.” Maybe you showed up late with this ships already underway without your commander “knowing” about it :)

Suh'weet! I had no idea the game could take place in the 70's. I thought it was all in the 80's, what years does it span?

Shame the game does not cover the brown water navy ops in the rivers around nam. Would be a great idea for DLC with PBRs and PCFs
