Soviets used to fire torpedoes at their own subs on exercises much to the horror of nearby NATO subs listening in. I can imagine these assets on your scenario had significant emotional events once they realised they were hearing actual live weapons sinking subs with counter fire going back at the surface fleet. Certainly quite a long and interesting report back to SUBLANTFLT lol.

Oh man oh man... My absolute favorite book and movie has been recreated fantastically in a super realistic cold-war naval game. I never thought I would see this day. I am getting this game as a christmas present for myself. I am excited to see what they do with the typhoon class. Or even better have a sub class for the typhoon that is a design similar to our dear friends Marko Ramiuses ship. Most if not all the vehicles in the movie are in this game so I am going to enjoy recreating some scenes.

There is a decent movie called "Hunter Killer" about a US navy submarine, and you really get to see how the RBU's, those soviet underwater rocket launchers work onboard a soviet era anti submarine destroyer, and the CIWS, which i think is either a Kashtan or Pantsir? Or something, some of those old soviet ships are still used today, and apparently those wacky sailor uniforms are standard for RF navy i think.

I think a better way to make this harder would simply be to have your fleet start farther away from the zone than the US fleet, allowing the defectors to have a chance to hunt the US ships if you can't intervene fast enough (and maybe give the US fleet some ships that are not suited for ASW combat like an Iowa or something to be an obstacle to avoid)

Ironically a sister ship of the Krivak which was hunting the defecting Soviet submarine was the real inspiration behind Hunt for red October. The Storozhevoy tried to defect in 1975 after which large parts of the Soviet navy and Air Force were used to hunt it down. It was a giant shitshow where they accidentally attacked innocent freighters and their own non defecting frigate. Paper skies made a great video about it.

Sail on fearlessly, Pride of the Northern Seas. Hope of the Revolution, you are the burst of faith of the people. (The submarines need to be a lot harder to localise. I mean, I don’t know what reality would be like, perhaps they’d die really, really quickly and easily. But look at it purely from a fiction / gameplay standpoint, the whole cat and mouse element just doesn’t seem to take place right now.)

Out of interest, the windows that you can drag around, are they true windows in so much that you can drag them onto other monitors? I have multiple monitors and being able to move the windows onto secondary monitors would definitely be something I'd want to do.

The problem with a lot of scenarios is that they completely miss the primary strength of subs.... that being, the ability to shadow and collect intelligence and positional data while also remaining hidden themselves. All of these scenarios have very discrete areas where you know enemies are, and the ranges are so close that pretty much any surface radar/helo is going to quickly give a track good enough to fire off rocket-propelled torpedoes.

The scenario i have watched, from SeaPower, Jingles and a few others, were designed and / or played specifically to showcase gameplay when there will definitely be shooting, and soon. That is, so far nobody has designed a scenario around commanding a submarine whose goal is to observe *without engaging.* Such a scenario would be an interesting exercise in doing it, but likely much less interesting to watch.

Like the book, does the scenario also allow the US fleet Ai to intentionally/aggressiveely fire noise makers to help the defecting subs? Suggestion to the devs: I hope there's text scale, color, and opacity options for the menu boxes. It could help the readability on 4K screens and those with challenged vision.
