This is an excerpt from the film "The Spirit of Liberation": • Spirit of Liberation -...
The Ludendorff Bridge, also known as the Bridge of Remagen, was named after General Erich Ludendorff and commissioned in 1916 during the First World War for military reasons. The double-track railway bridge led across the Rhine between Remagen and Erpel and was the first Allied crossing over the Rhine at the end of the Second World War. In 1945, during the retreat of Army Group B under Field Marshal Walter Model to the right side of the Rhine, all Rhine bridges were to be blown up according to the will of the Wehrmacht leadership. However, not enough explosives were used in the blasting and the bridge was only briefly lifted out of its bearings. Thus the Western Allied troops succeeded in advancing towards the Ruhr area. On 17 March 1945, the bridge finally collapsed, probably due to the failed blasting and the fighting of the previous days.
