I’m right there with you, I almost always prefer UK covers but out of these I definitely enjoyed all the US ones better. Since I live in the US, I’m super happy to see the US cover designs getting better. Now we just need the B&N exclusives to get on the Waterstones exclusives’ level! 😅

At the start of the video when you put the US covers and UK covers on either side with the FIGHT across the screen, it made me laugh audibly 😂

I'm usually team UK. The US puts too many people or body parts on the covers when not needed, especially in romance.

For me: 1. What Feasts At Night - US but only just, I think the horse just stood out to me more because of the point you were making about skulls being very common on book covers but I do really like the look of the UK cover 2. The Tainted Cup - UK, I wish the US one didn't have the plants on the left side because (and maybe it would look better in person) I don't think the art style really matches the rest of the cover, which is a shame because I do really like the rest of that cover. Also the UK one kind of gives Nausicaa Valley of the Wind Vibes and I love that film 3. The Warm Hands of Ghosts - UK, I agree that neither of these are particularly amazing but I absolutely despise the US one, it looks like a series of biographies I was made to read for school, or like a really bad romance you might pick up at the airport. At least the UK one is nice enough to look at even if it isn't particularly unique or specific to the book itself 4. Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White - US, the UK one just has too much going on (which is weird because usually that's the criticism I have of US covers). The UK one does give off a younger vibe, so it might fit the book better but I haven't read it so can't comment on that 5. Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands - UK, I think it fits with the first book in the series better, the US one just has too much of a change in font/way the title is written for the first book for me to be happy owning them as a series if that makes sense? Also the UK one matches the tone of the book a bit more in my opinion, the US covers of both the books make me think more of a murder mystery than a cosy fantasy So overall for me the UK wins with 3:2

I think whoever made the UK cover of Dark Star Burning didn’t even read/know about the book and what the Demon Gods actually are. There’s a fox, horse, and falcon/hawk(?) none of which are in the duology. I can’t imagine reading that version and being surprised and confused when those three animals aren’t included or even mentioned, aside from people riding horses in a few scenes, like what were they thinking lol

I think both Tainted Cup editions look great but I really like the US one so I got it even though it was the more expensive option. It's one of my favourite books of the year, so it worked out :D The US cover of those Victorian medals that people used to keep locks of hair from (deceased) loved ones so I think it kind of fits what the book is about in a sense (I haven't read it). The Hungarian cover of the first Emily Wilde book got released recently, it's a different take on either UK/US, I'd be curious to know what you think about it if you have a chance to look it up. I think it's beautiful but not sure how well it fits the book.

It would have to be UK for me. And I can understand your rationale about why some of the US covers fit the story better than the UK ones, but for me the cover is something i need to be attracted on an aesthetic level so that i actually reach out for the book😅, like for example the Tainted Cup, the US cover does not feel like a book I would want to read but I love mushrooms, so i got the UK version and I loved it. Something similar with the warm hands of ghosts or what feasts at night. But I have to say this time the US covers are objectively much better than in some of the other comparison videos.

Love these cover comparisons! I think I like all the American ones as well…except for the Emily Wilde books. Those cheerful UK covers just got me 😍 even though they don’t necessarily suit the story as well.

These are some of the best US covers I have seen. They have really stepped up their game. US often used to slap a generic picture or a photograph (yuck), and those tend to take me out, while the UK kept it more abstract which I prefer. As for this one, I disagree only on number 1 with you - something about the placement of the horse bothers me...

I always research the different editions so I can purchase my favorite, that's literally me. I own 1 copy of a book, it's all I need personally. I have twice wanted to buy different edition of my favorite books, but I can't justify it in my head

My votes: What Feasts at Night: US (creepy and unique) The Tainted Cup: UK (love the fungi!) Warm Hands of Ghosts: UK (I just really do not like the US cover, so the UK cover automatically wins) Dark Star Burning, Ash Falls White (they’re both beautiful, I cannot choose, special edition wins for sure) Emily Wilde UK (I love the flowers and fungi everywhere, nature is so pretty)

I like both, just depends on the book. I love trying to find the edition I like best before buying a book. Sometimes it’s US, sometimes UK. Sometimes it’s an older edition published ages ago!

I mostly agreed with you this time. Often I think UK covers are prettier but US ones reflect the story better. But I'm split on Emily Wilde. I bought the first one after reading it and got the UK cover, though I'm in Virginia. The US cover just bored me - no charm or color to attract my eye and totally lacked the nature vibe. I do like the colors and slightly cleaner style of US book 2. Though if I decide to buy a copy I'm pretty sure I'll go UK again so they match.

I bought the UK of The Warm Hands of Ghosts because I knew it was going to be a darker book and I thought the US cover had more of a romance look to it. I actually got the Waterstone's edition, mainly because the end pages were stunning. That's the only one where I prefer the UK edition. I have found with T. Kingfisher's books, I usually prefer the US over the UK. Not certain why that is really. The Amélie Wen Zhao books are very difficult for me to choose, but I think the US barely edges ahead. Now as far as the Emily Wilde books, I definitely prefer the US as I don't think the UK cover matches the tone at all. They're a little too sweet and the US ones showcase a bit of the creepiness that's there, especially the first book with the branches that look like hands.

I agree I think I prefer the US covers for all of them this time! Although the UK. version of The Tainted Cup is great too, I'm happy with the US version and the printing on the hardback is a huge plus. For Emily Wilde, I like both but I agree that the US version is more academic. I love that series though and am collecting both the US and the B&N editions (that have the UK cover in different colorways), so I get the best of both worlds lol. The only other book in this list that I am interested in is Warm Hands of Ghosts. If I end up liking it, I think I'd prefer the US cover on paperback.

I wouldn't say The Warm Hands of Ghosts US cover looks joyful. More creepy. And the poppy flower made me immediately think of WW1 because of the famous In Fields of Flanders poem, written by a soldier about the poppy fields. Because of the blood and decomposing meat on the fields the poppies were blooming like crazy in Belgium soil during the war. For this reason I'd say the US cover is way more relevant to me than the UK one. I also lived in Canada for 6 years where the poppy is the symbol of WW1 and veterans and they recite In Fields of Flanders often during memorial day.

I prefer the USA civers for almost all of these. The Tainted Cup is the exception, but I have to admit that the UK cover gives me more sci-fi vibes. With the Emily Wilde books, I prefer the USA images and typography, but I prefr the UK color schemes. I wish I could combine them. Also, I really dislike the texture of the USA EW books. I wish they had used something else or included a dust jacket.

For me, the UK ones tended to feel busier, even if more things were on the US cover. With I think two exceptions, I preferred the less busy US covers over the UK ones, even when I liked both.

Having only read one of these so far, my very important opinions are: What Feasts at Night - if it was a standalone, the UK would win, but I feel like the cohesiveness wins it for the US The Tainted Cup - the coloring of the UK got me bad The Warm Hands of Ghosts - I can't choose, b/c I have the OwlCrate Adult edition, which is the US colors styled like the UK, lol Dark Star Burning - The US just ekes out the win for me Emily Wilde - I think the US wins it for me because of the spacing and the font feels more striking, but also I saw it way before the UK versions and I'm attached to all the intricate details The US does win this round for me, but I actually think I've been into more UK covers for non-fantasy books lately

US cover of a dark and drowning tide is so much better it's not even funny. The black bird oracle is so close I can't decide, each has their own charm. A witches guide to magical innkeeping, US wins again. I cant decide for Someone you can build a nest in. The covers are vastly different and seem entirely different stories. US might fit the vibe better (based on the description) but the artwork for UK is so pretty...
