Just think about it, if every European country is getting 500,000 soldiers ready and we have about 30 countries here, and they would all do that, then it would be an army of 15 million soldiers. 500,000 soldiers per country is doable, though the bigger countries like the UK, Germany, Poland and France can definitely draft more soldiers than smaller ones like Luxemburg or the Baltic States. The EU has, without Russia or Ukraine a population of about 450 million people, even like 100 million more than the United States, so getting to 15 million armed forces would be only 3.3% of the total population. Now we need some more hardware, the spending has to go up to produce loads of military 'stuff'. And lots of drones too.

Regarding air pollution in the 60s and early 70s: it's absolutely true that the air was shit in big cities in those years. I know, because I was there, in south San Joaquin Valley and in trips over the Grapevine into the LA basin, it was B.A.D. BAD. However, the air quality in China's large cities, even today, is quite a bit worse. A good air-quality day in Shanghai or Hong Kong today is like L.A. was on bad days in the 70s. But yeah, watch old movies like Bullitt or the Dirty Harry movies, and you'll see scenes of pretty crappy air. Regarding 14 mile average visibility these days: that's pretty darned good. There are particulates in the air from natural emissions, so when the air is still, they build up as haze. (For example: the Smoky Mountains look like that because of the trees, and they're not on fire.) So don't just hear "14 miles" and think "it should be better." Maybe so, but more information needed.

If EU was more consolidated and solid in it's direction, that wouldn't be a problem, however unpredictability of the most powerful ally in NATO causes more of discord in already shaky Europe, though russia does serve as a balancing factor. On GDP: A large amount of US 'military spending' is also spent in European nations but called 'civilian'. Veterans in the US receive medical benefits which in Europe are generic for all residents. ROTC: similar. US corps of engineers: civilian in Europe. And US defense spending seems like industrial support while many European arms are imported from the US. So, economic investments are not comparable. European Nato members, on the whole, do pay more than the 2% quotum. And that where US 'spending' is a bit inflated compared to European spending. On Ukraine: Ukraine spends on arms itself, out of its own economy, which is strongly supported by European nations. For instance: electricity flows into Ukraine per its need: wow. Goods, investments, millions of refugees ... Europe is rather strongly engaged. US mil spending also is per US accounting: older kit goed to Ukraine booked as New Replacement costs. A lot of European support is just bought from international markets (like from Jordan, Egypt, the US, even India) per cost, direct. New kit is also delivered per new price. There just isn't such a material reserve in Europe - but payments do not compare with US payments where US money stays in the US, in Europe too, but (a lot) less than in the US.
